Hello again Alan, I have now bought the T3-R recorder and I'm still finding my way around its many features. Last night I watched your clip again and spotted a glaring omission. When you were commenting on the connectors at the rear you totally ignored the optical out feature. This would be most useful to many folk to either connect the device to a soundbar or in my case, connect to my Yamaha AV amp. And I can confirm, the tuner of my TV works perfectly well with the T3-R switched off, one just has to enable 'loop through' in the settings menu.

Nice review. I like the UI. Almost as good as my Toppy with MyStuff. Never seen anything approaching that. But this box seems quite speedy, and the UI looks good.
An interesting clip. I’ve had my Manhattan for less than 24 hours and I’m very happy with it. Obviously some things to get to grips with, especially the BBC text service. It looks like Manhattan are using the wi-fi function to show viewers what they would see if they’d viewed the BBC app on their iPads or PCs. Thanks for that but from what I have read, if one goes into the Settings one can switch Loop through 'On' thus enabling you to watch the TV when the Manhattan is on standby, just like my current Humax T2
So where it says ok options from when you go on to Sunday or Tuesday cause I would like you to give me some more information please Alan can you please do another review of Manhattan please
Excellent review, thank you. For me it was either a Humax or a Manhattan...I think you have convinced me I should go the Manhattan route. One thing, around 11:30 you say that if you only wish to watch via the TV tuner, you can only do so if you switch on the PVR or you get no aerial feed. This surely cannot be correct, my Panasonic & LG can both be switched off (on standby) but I can still watch just my TV. Please advise.
How does rewind live tv work? I assume that means the box is constantly recording? Does that not Shorten the HDD lifespan and more importantly what about noise, if the HDD is constantly spinning is it loud? Is there an option to turn off rewind live TV and have a quite box that only makes noise when you pause/record something manually? Can it go frame by frame when watching a recorded show?
Made the jump from Sky Q to T3R last year when the box was launched, and so pleased I am free from Sky now 😁 Box is nice and responsive, a few features may be missing (did like multi room with Sky), but you soon get used to it. Had an issue with HDCP error from Denon x2500h amp when 4k was selected on T3R but Manhattan support was fantastic, they replicated the issue and sent me a new firmware to test within a couple of days, which resolved the issue. Have contacted them a couple more times and they are always eager to fix your problems. Imagine trying to get Sky to fix a problem like that 😣 Agree with comments about the remote and the need to pair it with another streaming box if you can. I had a Harmony remote anyway, and a 4k fire tv stick for Netflix and Amazon prime, so I'm happy with my setup and the fact I am no longer paying Sky subs every month 👍
@W A the manhattan T3r is a freeview box so receives freeview via your TV aerial. To view freeview (free to air) via satellite you will need a freesat box, not something I've used myself. I'd suggest contacting manhattan support if you need more advice - manhattan-tv.com/support
How does this compare to the Humax Aura?. The Aura seems to have a far better list of features (like chrome cast built in) but people have been having lots of issues with them and it seems like it was released before it was ready. Split between this with a chrome cast or the all in one Aura

I just need a bit of help. Why does the machine say that HDD is full? I just can't clear it. My machine shows it's recording on BBC 1 and BBC 1 HD at the same time, but I never get 2 recordings.Any ideas please??
We are about to give up BT Tv due to cost. We had sky, then went to BT. At the time the freeview and freesat boxes for around £150 were crap. Now i'm looking at this and the humax 5000t. I was hoping this box would have netflix but sadly not :( I was hoping to get rid of the roku box that is currently plugged into the tv as well as the bt box. Might have to go with the slow, humax 5000t.

Looking to get Manhattan T2-R for my elderly mother in law who's possibly finally going to have to ditch her vast VHS collection (she records EVERTHING on VHS) as her third(!) Panasonic DVD/VHS combo is on the blink and they're crazy money now to replace/fix. She needs to be something UBER easy to use (EPG wise), and this seems cleaner / easier than the EPG on BT YouView (I only have experience of the BT YouView and Sky HD+ EPGs) but this looks pretty simple.
The T3-R has all the catch up TV apps. I don't think the T2-R does. Also the T3-R now has Britbox, which is a subscription TV app but you can get a free month and then cancel anytime if you don't want to pay.

Hi there, we have the Manhattan box and are really struggling with the Tuning for it. When it scans it says it can't find any channels? but we can connect to the internet fine. We've got everything plugged in and we've gone on the settings to change it to turn on the 5V antenna Power. But it hasn't made a difference. We tried all the tuning options and we're still not getting anything. Our antenna is ontop of our curtains in the window. So signal should be fine to connect. I'm lost to know what to do! If anyones got any ideas. I could really use the help :(
I'm on my 2nd BT Youview box in about 3 years. The current one I've had for a year and it's playing up, when I record on it, the recordings are jerky and pixilated and the remote won't respond well, I think it's kaput, so I'm thinking about getting this Manhattan box, maybe the 500GB version.

Bought on 13th May 22. Keeps freezing and I have to unplug it 3/4 times a night to get programs back on. Then it stops recording if I've to unplug it when recording programs. Not good

if they could sort out the bugs i would go Humax aura box but seems early issues. Not easy choice and neither are perfect, no netflix integration on either but android tv is nice to have.

Thanks for the review, was mainly looking at this for my parents, they currenty don't have a smart TV and have a Humax box they've had for years, its fine and does not need to be replaced, I deally they want some smart functionality, they don't need to upgrade TV really, if thiswas more flexible having netflix, prime and plex/emby, this would be a no brainer all in one solution but at this rate it does not add enough. Something I think is spread wrongly about freeview play is not everything in the past is watchable is it? its only some stuff right? they sort of advertise it like you can watch anything in the past week? or am I wrong and you can?
you can only watch what is available from on demand. so most of the big channels programmes are available but not smaller channels. just remember its an on-demand service.
Just left sky as it got too much for me. Can you download on demand programmes as I don’t know if I should just go for the 500gb or the 1tb I think this is the box that can replace my sky q box
to be honest its so long now since i used it i dont recall if it just streams or downloads too. i haven't touched it since i got my nvidia shield pro, if you are a slightly techy the shield can replace everything else.
Great review your right about the handset in a dark room I’m constantly holding my handset the wrong way round just because of the shape being the same at both ends . i’m not technical but I have found one problem if you can help ? While taping Star Trek on horror bits off of the TV Guide ive found that on replay i’m missing bits of the beginning of the Programme I have also found out sometimes I’m missing bits at the end of feature film on some other channels . do you know of anyone else who has had this problem with these device ? I can still get a refund or change it if necessary . if you get this message I would appreciate your opinion basically I bought it to use as a recorder But missing bits from the beginning of bits on the end doesn’t sound right to me I thought the signal they send to the box stops this happening Am I correct ?👋🏻
Manual padding The T3-R normally starts and stops recording when the broadcaster signals that the programme starts and ends. This is because programmes almost never start or end at the exact scheduled time - they're usually a minute or two early or late, and sometimes even more. This broadcaster signalling is normally very accurate and means recordings start and stop exactly when they should. However, sometimes broadcasters get it wrong, particularly on the more niche channels. If you’re finding that some of your recordings are starting late or finishing early, we’ve added the option to change from this automatic behaviour and instead add a customisable amount of padding to the start and end of all recordings. Go to: Settings > Recording & Playback > Padding Options > Padding Type > Manual. In our testing we’ve found that 5 minutes of padding is plenty so have set this as the default to be added to the start and end, however you can change this to any amount from 2 to 10 minutes.

Hi, last night mine just froze and changed the battery’s in the remote but nothing has worked. Every time I unplug and plug back in it comes on with blue light in box and same channel. Not sure what to do? Thanks
Yes it records when in standby. Loop mode will mean watching via TV for llive tv. Loop isnt really a mode, it just connects the tv to the ariel via the box. You could split the ariel off anyway and avoid looping altogether.
Hello i have a question im leaving in France with my wife and i have a Manhattan box with free channel i order this one but i can't find any channel on the new one is this new box work only in the UK? If i set it up in UK and bring it back to france it would work?
Bought one a couple of days ago. Only problem I have is the TV guide is only displaying a handful of channels starting at channel 11? Any pointers to get all the individual channels listed in the guide?
@@alanrossreviews Hi Alan, tried rescanning several times first channel is channel 11 then 17, 19, 31 and so on. No BBC 1-2 or any of the traditional channels.
@@alanrossreviews problem turned out to be the short cable connecting the T3 to the aerial socket. It worked fine connected to the TV only, but connected to the T3 it was killing the signal for some reason.
I have F*cked off Virgin, as they are a diabolical service. I wanted to record and have just got this, and it is super good as opposed to all the other crap Amazon sells. I am impressed by the easy set-up. The remote is a proper size, not too bothered about a backlight as Virgin never had that, and I never had one anyway. Other cheap Freeviews come with a complete crap small remote which are just, well, crap! This is a proper size, and you can see whats what. It's early days for me, but I am happy at the moment. I have kicked off some recordings for a test, and was easy to do. Watch this space.
I bought Manhattan T3-R Freeview but when I try to watch itv,chnl4,chnl5,itv2 and bbc it asks me to sign into the players, I do not have a tv licence as I bought this to not pay the licence and only watch catch-up and not watch live or record live tv. If I enter my details will I legally be able to utilise the on demand if I keep away from the live chnl s?
Can i use this without an arial? I was told that i could i spent 35 quid and turns out i actually cant. My aerial bit has broken off my tv so i cant put an aerial in the back. I have the manhattan t1.
You just need to put an aerial into the back of this box and then connect the box to the TV with an HDMI cable. The broken but in the bank of your truly wouldn't affect this box at all
I just gott one of these and it keeps flickering every few seconds even though the signal strength is 80-85% and signal quality is 100%. The only thing I can think to ddo is to buy an amplifier but would you recommend this or are there things I can do before shelling out even more money?
If you had a satellite dish with Sky Q it will NOT support the 'standard' FREESAT receiver/recorder. 😶You need to replace the LNB with a suitable 'freeview' option. *(NOT expensive I should add.) IF you have some one fit it for you ie a friend et someone knowledgeable and able.. probably less than £50 INCLUDING the LNB.👀 Fitted by a professional fitter about £80.+ ! The Sky Q LNB accesses a Satellite that has a locked frequency to it. 👀 Many will use the FREE VIEW aerial unit. For that you only need a decent aerial that can receive a decent signal. It must of course be a DIGITAL aerial.
You can't haggle with Sky anyway you fool. What makes you think you can just demand that Sky give you better prices than everyone else? Don't be stupid.

its basically the bbc app rather than teletext. personally i prefer teletext.

yeah no netflix is a big miss, maybe they couldnt get licensed or wouldnt pay the fee. ive got my nvidia shield so everything is covered.
Marc Connell If you want Netflix Marc, the best way is to buy a decent brand smart TV, maybe even one that supports 4K.

yes this is pretty much as simple as it gets but there is still a learning curve finding your way around.

yes just connect Ariel first to box then from box to tv so you can watch tv while still recording 2 channels.

you can watch the ones that are on one of the on demand channels like iplayer.

I think this is the box that can replace my sky q box
to be honest its so long now since i used it i dont recall if it just streams or downloads too. i haven't touched it since i got my nvidia shield pro, if you are a slightly techy the shield can replace everything else.

Great review your right about the handset in a dark room I’m constantly holding my handset the wrong way round just because of the shape being the same at both ends . i’m not technical but I have found one problem if you can help ? While taping Star Trek on horror bits off of the TV Guide ive found that on replay i’m missing bits of the beginning of the Programme I have also found out sometimes I’m missing bits at the end of feature film on some other channels . do you know of anyone else who has had this problem with these device ? I can still get a refund or change it if necessary . if you get this message I would appreciate your opinion basically I bought it to use as a recorder But missing bits from the beginning of bits on the end doesn’t sound right to me I thought the signal they send to the box stops this happening Am I correct ?👋🏻
Manual padding
The T3-R normally starts and stops recording when the broadcaster signals that the programme starts and ends. This is because programmes almost never start or end at the exact scheduled time - they're usually a minute or two early or late, and sometimes even more. This broadcaster signalling is normally very accurate and means recordings start and stop exactly when they should. However, sometimes broadcasters get it wrong, particularly on the more niche channels.
If you’re finding that some of your recordings are starting late or finishing early, we’ve added the option to change from this automatic behaviour and instead add a customisable amount of padding to the start and end of all recordings. Go to: Settings > Recording & Playback > Padding Options > Padding Type > Manual. In our testing we’ve found that 5 minutes of padding is plenty so have set this as the default to be added to the start and end, however you can change this to any amount from 2 to 10 minutes.

Hi, last night mine just froze and changed the battery’s in the remote but nothing has worked. Every time I unplug and plug back in it comes on with blue light in box and same channel. Not sure what to do? Thanks

Hi ya do you know if it records in standby mode and when using the loop mode do you use the tv input or hdmi?
Yes it records when in standby. Loop mode will mean watching via TV for llive tv. Loop isnt really a mode, it just connects the tv to the ariel via the box. You could split the ariel off anyway and avoid looping altogether.

Hello i have a question im leaving in France with my wife and i have a Manhattan box with free channel i order this one but i can't find any channel on the new one is this new box work only in the UK? If i set it up in UK and bring it back to france it would work?
it works via an Ariel, its only picking up british broadcasts. the streaming should work though if you use a vpn.
Can you use this with an outside TV aerial only and have no internet connection ?
Yes internet just gives on demand and firmware updates

Yes but wired is better. Just run another cable from hub to box.

Bought one a couple of days ago. Only problem I have is the TV guide is only displaying a handful of channels starting at channel 11? Any pointers to get all the individual channels listed in the guide?
sounds like you need to rescan your channels, if you manually go to 1 is there a channel there?
@@alanrossreviews Hi Alan, tried rescanning several times first channel is channel 11 then 17, 19, 31 and so on. No BBC 1-2 or any of the traditional channels.
how strong is your signal?
@@alanrossreviews problem turned out to be the short cable connecting the T3 to the aerial socket. It worked fine connected to the TV only, but connected to the T3 it was killing the signal for some reason.
Would it be better if went for a hd box rather than 4k box and save £50 and do boxes come with apps aswell 😃☺️😃☺️
not if you have a 4k tv. yes it has some apps, depends which ones you are after.
Does this box work in Europe?
I have F*cked off Virgin, as they are a diabolical service.
I wanted to record and have just got this, and it is super good as opposed to all the other crap Amazon sells. I am impressed by the easy set-up. The remote is a proper size, not too bothered about a backlight as Virgin never had that, and I never had one anyway. Other cheap Freeviews come with a complete crap small remote which are just, well, crap! This is a proper size, and you can see whats what.
It's early days for me, but I am happy at the moment. I have kicked off some recordings for a test, and was easy to do.

This is a terrestrial box, not satellite. It works from the normal aerial and not a sky dish. You would need a freesat box.

I bought Manhattan T3-R Freeview but when I try to watch itv,chnl4,chnl5,itv2 and bbc it asks me to sign into the players, I do not have a tv licence as I bought this to not pay the licence and only watch catch-up and not watch live or record live tv. If I enter my details will I legally be able to utilise the on demand if I keep away from the live chnl s?
nope, if you stream you still need a licence.

Can i use this without an arial? I was told that i could i spent 35 quid and turns out i actually cant. My aerial bit has broken off my tv so i cant put an aerial in the back. I have the manhattan t1.
only the on demand will work without an Ariel but with internet access.

You just need to put an aerial into the back of this box and then connect the box to the TV with an HDMI cable.
The broken but in the bank of your truly wouldn't affect this box at all
I just gott one of these and it keeps flickering every few seconds even though the signal strength is 80-85% and signal quality is 100%. The only thing I can think to ddo is to buy an amplifier but would you recommend this or are there things I can do before shelling out even more money?
actually you can get too much signal, try an attenuator, if that doesnt work return the unit for a new one and see if it helps.
If you had a satellite dish with Sky Q it will NOT support the 'standard' FREESAT receiver/recorder. 😶You need to replace the LNB with a suitable 'freeview' option. *(NOT expensive I should add.) IF you have some one fit it for you ie a friend et someone knowledgeable and able.. probably less than £50 INCLUDING the LNB.👀 Fitted by a professional fitter about £80.+ ! The Sky Q LNB accesses a Satellite that has a locked frequency to it. 👀 Many will use the FREE VIEW aerial unit. For that you only need a decent aerial that can receive a decent signal. It must of course be a DIGITAL aerial.
