the early stages of the war, especially in VA....it is a metaphor as the army of northern VA and Confederate forces held their ground in places in northern VA. especially Fredericksburg. though the rebel yell could have been used as a diversion for the forces the south had that were not even armed....the metaphor is more to show that the south fought back against the union well, especially considering that logistically, the south could not win this war. (ie, a blockade + limited supplies vs a fully industrialized nation.....the only really advantage the south had was more military academies and home advantage.....but even this alone isn't enough to win a war) read into stonewall and Lee though, they were very dynamic generals that could win in losing situations...if you don't want to then that really is your loss for not looking into historical generals

Michael Henry my favorite part of that compromise is that slaves are referred to as people in the Constitution, even though the South attempted to maintain that they weren’t
Just to clear this up, the 3\5's compromise was put in place so that slaves in the south wouldn't count as a full citizen of those states so that the south would have less representation in congress. This was to give republicans more power over the south (all democrats) in congress. It wasn't about being racist it was about giving republicans a strategic advantage.
Franz Ferdinand Uh, just so ya know: when the 3/5 compromise was made there were no Republicans and Democrats. The 3/5 compromise was part of the Constitutional Convention that created this country. The Democrats were formed when Jefferson was president and the Republicans were formed in 1856.
"If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that." - Abraham Lincoln. Oversimplified indeed. The Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in only seceding states, but left loyal slave owning states alone to continue the practice as well as northern captured confederate states. The proclamation was in effort to thwart any potential countries in Europe from joining the confederate cause which would have turned the tide in a much different direction. There was nothing inherently good about slavery, but no one at the time actually cared to free them except for a small handful of people. That being said, the freeing of the slaves was the right thing to do, but we shouldn't conflate that freedom with Abraham Lincoln "good will" in this way.
This line is always taken out of context. Your bias ignores literally all other evidence on the contrary. Lincoln, as president couldn't abolish slavery. It was protected in the constitution. The EP was a technical loop hole by executive order. Lincoln, although temporary, had set a precedent. the EP freed only salves in federal territory because that was all he could legally do. Congress would eventually need to legislate the abolition of slavery-as it eventually did. Lincoln was personally against slavery his entire life and was the whole catalyst for the Republican party from which he was elected. His duty, as the President was to preserve the union during the war. Please take at least 10 minutes to educate yourself before you go regurgitating this nonsense on the internet.
@@Sforschondetta I'm genuinely curious, what is the context missing from the statement? Because just from the wording it sounds pretty damning. If you can explain to me this missing context, it would certainly change my view of Lincoln. However, given this statement, the (admittedly disputed) "Root, hog, or die" story, and the fact that he never did anything about Illinois's anti-black laws, it seem to me that 'Southern sympathisers' have Lincoln's character measured quite fairly.
My grand fathers great great uncle fought in the Union army during the war. He was split up from his platoon during a skirmish with confederate troops and he went into the wild. He was there for weeks until finally being rescued by a farmer. It was found out that he was infected with a disease and he was only expected to live for another year, however he managed to survive and he lived a long life to the age of 90.
## the south mostly grew cash crops, and only enough food to support the workers. Since the north was industrial, farmers actually termed food to feed the favorite workers, leading the north to control 80% of the grain

At the town of Shiloh, there is a pond that wounded troops crawled to to drink before they died, so many men died next to the pond that their blood flowed into the water turning the pond a deep red and it stayed that way for many months, to the point that the dirt and rocks under the water were stained red, so even now 150 years later, even though the water is clear and the blood is long since gone, the pond is still a harsh red color.
We watched this in class and everyone was laughing because of how fast he was talking so we talked our teacher into putting it at the faster speed and it the funniest thing I swear.
@John D Ruddy The GOP didn't leave the freed slaves because of big business (no idea where you got that info). They left because Reconstruction was legally grey at best then was finally determined to be unconstitutional and was forced to leave (there was also some political side dealing at the time that helped spur the removal of the Union troops. I also wish you included at least one sentence to General George H. Thomas. He was a Virginian who was friends with Robert E. Lee and joined the Union. He defeated the entire Confederate army at Nashville and arguably helped save the war and Lincoln's election by salvaging the Atlanta campaign from Sherman's incompetence (Sherman is easily one of the worst officers of the Civil War).
The GOP didn’t leave the freed slaves during Reconstruction, the party left civil rights for African Americans in the early 20th century, when the parties swapped. One of the videos I found most interesting was Knowing Better’s Political Ships of Theseus. It talks about the party swap of the early half of the 20th century and shows how most politicians who were against civil rights switched to the Republican Party (most but not all). As for Sherman being incompetent, that’s the first I’ve heard of it. I’ll do some research on it. I’ve been telling people how Sherman was a brutally efficient general for years, and I’d hate to be wrong about that.
@@rjhaney2614 Thanks for the video recommendation. I'll need to take a look at it. As for Sherman, he may have been brutally efficient, I can't really speak to that, but he did make some bad choices during Shiloh and during the Atlanta campaign that cost thousands of Union soldiers lives. He also had a nervous breakdown before Shiloh, and I believe he lost his son around the time of the Atlanta campaign. Regardless, he backstabbed Gen. Thomas on a few occasions (even though Thomas thought of them as the best of friends since they roomed together at West Point) and he was one to grandstand and seek glory as opposed to winning decisive battles. My opinion might be tainted since I'm a huge fan of General George H. Thomas, but I recommend you read up on him if you can.

5:58 Wasn’t Lee significantly outnumbered in the Seven Days Battles? I remember hearing that McClellan had more troops on the peninsula than the Confederacy had troops in the entire war at that point.
McClellan’s problem as a General was that he was too cautious. He planned extensively before each battle in an attempt to minimize casualties. It made him popular with his men, but led him to squander several opportunities he had to crush the Confederacy early on and end the war by 1863.
Excellent summation, although I think it could have been improved by spending more time on the legality of cessation. This is what people are talking about when they mention States Rights. History and the North decided cessation would not be allowed, but at the time the South had no reason to believe it would be forbidden. Less than a century before, the nation was born of the belief that people shouldn't be subject to empire, especially one that disagreed with them. Even though the South was ethically wrong to impose slavery on their own community, the North was not in the right to enact unpopular laws. This discussion is particularly important TODAY, as the Brexit has people talking about a dissolution of the UK, and itself represents a cessation from the EU. What makes Scotland leaving England or Britain leaving the EU (sorry if I misused Britannia's many names) more acceptable than the South leaving the Union?
Secession is secession. It is either legal or illegal. Constitutional or unconstitutional. The reason for secession isn't material. Trying to tie it to slavery is straw man argument. And the north had no intention of starting a war over slavery, only over secession.
+RonPaulHatesBlacks Oh I think I see why you're asking. What I'm trying to show is that the North was not prepared to go to war just to end slavery. They did not care enough. They got involved only when the size of the Union was threatened. Even then, it wasn't until the war dragged on longer than they expected that they threw in an end to slavery. It was a tactical move to get black troops, cause havoc at Southern farms and economy, with the moral value a distant third. *I* think slavery is morally wrong, but the North didn't give a shit.
+RonPaulHatesBlacks Where do you live that Lincoln isn't deified for emancipation? Like I said, the South loved slavery, and they were wrong to. But they never had to fight for it. Even the North still had slaves when the fighting began. Slaves were being returned South halfway through the war! How can you insist that they were fighting for something they already had, something that wasn't being taken away? They were fighting for the right to self govern. One of their first self governing acts would be to ensure the continuation of slavery, but there is an important difference between the two. I hate the South for tarnishing the good name of Independence with the blight of slavery, and I hate the North for being more concerned with suppressing Independence than with suppressing slavery. Can you not see the difference? Are you so dumbfounded by slavery that freedom becomes an affront to you? Do you likewise believe that the Japanese, Italians, occasional Russians, and all the Axis powers fought only for genocide? That there was nothing else the mind? This isn't a movie. There are no White Hats or Black Hats. There are only people. Those people tend to believe a lot of different things, and we can choose for ourselves which things we agree with and which ones we don't. Slavery is indefensible. Independence is admirable. The CSA was somewhere in between.

Quote: "The Rebel Yell drove the Union forces back to Washington." WTF?
the early stages of the war, especially in VA....it is a metaphor as the army of northern VA and Confederate forces held their ground in places in northern VA. especially Fredericksburg.
though the rebel yell could have been used as a diversion for the forces the south had that were not even armed....the metaphor is more to show that the south fought back against the union well, especially considering that logistically, the south could not win this war. (ie, a blockade + limited supplies vs a fully industrialized nation.....the only really advantage the south had was more military academies and home advantage.....but even this alone isn't enough to win a war)
read into stonewall and Lee though, they were very dynamic generals that could win in losing situations...if you don't want to then that really is your loss for not looking into historical generals
Bleak House The confede charge battle cry was so terrifying that many union forces turned and ran out a fear.

5:36 dat poor warship :(
The 3/5's compromise always cracks me up. It's just so stupid.
Michael Henry my favorite part of that compromise is that slaves are referred to as people in the Constitution, even though the South attempted to maintain that they weren’t
the 5/5ths version would give slaveowners more representation, allowing it to spread west.
@@ThatGuy-te9wh Exactly the 3/5 was to not make slave owners too powerful right wingers forget the south didnt give slaves the right to vote.
@@Sforschondetta this man is right. The original post is commonly taken out of context by revisionist historians sympathetic to the south.

Finally, someone else with a brain

Wasn’t Lee significantly outnumbered in the Seven Days Battles?
+Josh Timmerman But you must concede that without secession there'd have been no war and without war there'd likely not have been an end to slavery.
+RonPaulHatesBlacks Yes.
