  • CHOICE - Changing Habits tO prevent chIldhood CariEs: A Randomised Control Trials of a Family-Focused Therapeutic Conversation Delivered by Dental Nurses in Primary Care
This study builds on the successful Dental RECUR Trial conducted in secondary care, where families whose children needed dental extractions received an individualised intervention with a trained dental nurse. CHOICE is now set to evaluate the effectiveness of this intervention in the primary care setting. CHOICE will use a personalised goal-centred approach to teach parents/guardians how to change habits that lead to tooth decay in favour of health promoting family routines. The trial will evaluate its effectiveness in high-risk children at an earlier stage of the disease. This is an opportunity for dental nurse staff development in research and could be an excellent approach to support dental nurse staff retention.
One or two dental nurses would be trained to undertake a behaviour change conversations with parents. These behaviour change conversations have already shown success in preventing further cavities in secondary care. All training and support for the project will be funded.
