Just a little thought regarding what you say about over planning. I always list absolutely everything in an area that we may want to do or see but the important thing is that we never have any intention or expectation of doing all of them. We like having the option that we can decide what to do daily depending on the weather or what we feel like or even, as you mentioned, just enjoy a day doing absolutely nothing.
Thanks kat, we spend 6 months of the year living in our van, there's my partner myself and the dog(chip) atm we are in southern France and our plan is... Get the van fixed at a local garage in the morning. There's something we didn't expect. I think our plan is to go to Portugal I think but let's see what happens, we pass so many things we want to see and do, so each day as it comes. Life is for living so let's live. And when the travel bug hits it will be with you forever. Stay safe out there
Thank you Kat for this video. When I use a Satnav on a road trip, I use "HERE We Go" as much as possible. It has one big advantage over the other apps. You can set a desired speed limit which is a major factor of expected arrival time. Driving my camper no more than 55 MPH on the motorway, I set the limit to 50, and will change the setting when traveling on narrow secondary roads. Once gaining some practice, you can get sensible trip arrival times.
Re: time from A to B estimates, it's not just narrow and bendy roads to factor in. Even if you're on an A-Road in the UK / RN in France / etc. you need to add time for the dreaded roundabouts ... Also, if you're in the countryside, tractors and other farm vehicles can play havoc with your timings. Then there's hills: for instance the A7 south from Lyon may on the map look like a lovely straight autoroute than you can tank down at 120kph all the way, but boy is it uppy-downy. Net:net - I reckon to add 50% to a regular SatNav timing, and if we arrive early, then great 🙂
I've experienced all these on the ski trip I'm on now, they're so true. 80mph toll roads are misleading for how long map software estimates it takes because I'm cruising at 50 not 80 😅🚐 The same with mountain roads, it's great progress on motorways but as soon as you get to the mountain areas the distance you cover in the same time drastically reduces 🏔️ I've made vague area plans for the 2 weeks but left it for the trip to decide when to move on each day 👍 mainly as the weather is a big factor in skiing ⛷️
Map software uses average speeds for vehicles ahead of you, not the speed limits. It's an estimate of current possible travel times under current conditions, not a prediction of your time.
I arrived at St Maloon 16th January. My return ferry is on the 11th April at the moment I am parked in carrefour Car Park leon spain , next stage is Chaves Portugal, immediate consideration is laundry and LPG, The weather isn't due to get better till Thursday so I might stay in Chaves till Thursday and chil. My aim is to do the N2 then travel around south spain and then back nothings booked. I am just winging it. Wish me luck, any advice for me?
Our plan normally reads "turn right at Calais". If we're feeling adventurous then it's "turn left", but turn right normally works out better. 🙂

Thanks again for the useful info.
The link to the checklist is broken, as I get a 404 error message
Thanks for letting me know. I've fixed it now.
Hi Kat,I tried to download your check list and was unsuccessful. Is there something I should have done?
Thanks for letting me know- fixed the link now :)

Hi Kat, thanks for this. I see you have a couple of motorbikes in tow and you have a dog. How do you take your dog motorcycling?
