Fantastic. I had Pilot whales visit like this in the Pacific southwest of Panama. They kept coming back over a few days love the underwater shots. I knew they were coming back because you could hear them. Nice to see someone else with the how do I get more sail up dilemma. I like the trysail rig. My ultimate rig was for the wind just off directly astern. Main boomed out and tied down hard with a preventer on the leeward side. No.1 jib poled out on the windward also tied down hard. Cruising Chute behind the main flying high and free and here's the twist, the other no.1 jib tack to tack at the foredeck head to the back of the boat and the clew on the halyard. There were 2 of us to set that up though. You are right you need a pole.
@@SVRoquetta I tried that using the boom as the second pole, it works. However having the main up gives both more sail area and better stability in those rolly seas. You can still set a second Jib behind the main. The poled out jib on the other side pushes the wind through the gap between Jib and Main so that extra sail actually seemed to do a lot of work. I guess it all depends on the boat and the conditions. Non of that works with the wind direct astern which the twistler does and the twistler also has the advantage of allowing small course changes in either direction. Anyway if you are bored trying different combinations can keep you happy for hours
Great footage. Despite contrary winds you made some good time. The twister sure is a nice sailor. Looking forward to part 2 Fair winds on leg back home
I have enjoyed many of your videos. Please could you do one on how you set up you Tablet for navigation and how you set up your weather map set up. Thanks.
Hi Mike, thanks! I did a video called ‘hmm...upgrades’ where I talk about my set up. Have a look at that. Happy to do a more extensive video if you still have questions 👍
Well done Justin, you are a lucky ......lucky ..... bastard 😊😉! Your video proves what an ideal sea boat the twister is. I was once surrounded and I mean surrounded just off Finisterre by hundreds of dolphins that memory I will take to my watery grave. I wish my boat was as sophisticated as yours for my Windvane are use a piece of line and some bungee cord and for my Wind indcateroa straw hat I know if it blows off I have to reef !! Well done !!! Beautiful video, Justin. I speak pilot whale. They’re talking negatively about your green waterline. “My God, George, just look at this guy’s waterline. What a (expletive)!”.
Incredibly, the stuffing box broke off the stern tube 😂😂😂 who’d have thought.. it continues to leak but won’t become a catastrophic leak. Carry on regardless 😁👍
Well done on the challenge, you and your twister did well! That video was great, and that experience with the whales, fantastic!!!!! The sounds!!!!!! Quick question.....What camera are you using for the underwater shots? Well done James
I see you'd had it a little rough last week of the passage but am glad you survived the cuppa soups and bottled urine, sounded like a sketchy dish. Anyway, well done Justin. You looked elated in last video. Sam Holmes Sailing has just arrived in the Azores from US via Bermuda hes a real nice lad if you get to meet him.
@@SVRoquetta looks like Sam is sailing over from Horta at the moment. I’m seriously thinking of the hibridean vane now seen you in action with it do you think it’s possible to manufacture stainless steel instead of timber?
Currious, if you are running with the winds, wouldn't it make sense to fully raise the mainsail, let out the main sheets, and flip the headsail to the opposite side of the main sail? That way, you would get more surface area for wind pressure and no sails blocking the wind.
It's a balancing act. Mental adaptability is the key. Is the boat safe, is it going fast enough, is it holding course? I logged 160 GPS miles in the first 24hrs. Varified with a tracker. Fast enough. No main, no chance of a gybe. All sail area forward of the mast, windvane copes much better and skipper can get some rest. Another practical option might have been a fully reefed main and zig zagging on deep reaches. I doubt I'd have been more comfortable or covered more ground. These choices are never straightforward 😂😂
Very nicely done: great filming and great narration. Sure makes me wish I were at sea too.
Great video 👍. Amazing shots of the whales, so unreal to be able to listen them from inside the boat!. Looking forward to the next one.
Fantastic! Looking forward to the next installment!
Well done what a great adventure, great boat thanks for sharing the video truly inspirational

I need two of them ‘twistler rig’ appeals 👍

The singe side band weather map is almost like magic!

In the first 24hrs I made 158 gps miles. Unbelievable. All down hill after that I’m afraid 😂😂😂
158 wow..great miles..
So glad I came across this. Well done my friend.
Thank you, I follow your channel and have done for a while, welcome to mine! 😁

Wow, those whales are just spectacular. Never seen them like that, what a special moment. What ocean sailing is all about.
Great video mate. Your DFC and Bar awaits you!!!

😂😂 believe it or not, I dried the boat out alongside and cleaned and antifouled the week before the trip. You're right though 😂😂😂 you speak whale?
Wow, wow, wow! What an adventure!!!! Those whales were incredible!!!!!
Brilliant. Expect a charter from David Attenborough.
Brilliant, skipper!
whales/dolphins are a great tradeoff for wind!!
So fun to watch :)
Brilliant mate
Great stuff mate. Blood good effort. My dullards book of sea-life recognition thinks they are long finned pilot whales.
Great video again Justin. You never did say where the water in the bilge came from? Obviously not a big problem at the time. OK, Part 2 please!!

It’s a gopro session, quite old now, but waterproof 👍
Well done, was following you on google maps, you seemed to arrive 2nd, am I right?
Good work.
Just got to get back now!
Cheers Rich
3rd boat under 30 feet. I’m very pleased 👍
Very well done. Is it a race back, or just everyone returns when they want?
@@gwrdriver1660 the race is only one way, so a more relaxed entire for everyone
Make sure you take extra pot noodles for the return trip, you don't want to resort to cuppa soup made with urine again, hahaha,
Cheers, Rich

Millennial falcon is anchored off too. Punch it chewy 😂😂😂 I’ll look out for sam
