Preach Andre!! I am also a black nerd and I deal with BS from both sides that's why I tend to drift to people like me (you, Childish Gambino, Tyler etc...) I am definitely gonna check this movie out. I'm just happy someone understands!
Andre, you hit it on the mark. Growing up I used to get picked on, beat up, and tormented because I liked different things that weren't "black" enough. That were too nerdy, I used to get told I wasn't black for the things I liked. I'm seeing this movie, plus the main character in the movie is from a local high school in my county so I gotta support DeKalb.
Definitely one of the best movies of the year Its almost like a modern day house party. I love the editing and the shifting points of view in the storyline
Black nerds unite! OG black nerd here. I agree 1000%. This movie spoke to me. That street life vs nerd life is true facts. Especially Brooklyn in the 90's.
Andre: I'm a white middle-aged lady nerd and I can relate too! So many people think that because you're a woman or in your 40s, you can't enjoy superheroes or sci-fi... One guy told me once, after I said I liked Captain America, that I probably didn't even know his real name... sigh... Anyway, keep up the great work! :-)
Lisa Mortini My mom is close to 60 and knows more about the X-Men than I would ever hope to.(I had to take her to see the last 2 X-Men movies and both Avengers) People just don't understand that things aren't specific to any demographic. Whoever you are,do what makes you happy.
So that means you know captain Americas real name? PROPS TO YOUUUUUUU You are one of the only girls who probably doesn't only like him because of his abs. Congratzzzzz
Lisa Mortini Strider: Your mom sounds fun! Interestingly enough, I also took my mom to the first X-Men movie and she really enjoyed it. JumpSpace: Well, the abs sure don't hurt. ;-)
Lisa Mortini I'm not being rude or nothing but I have to say this - *you cannot relate to the Black experience in any fashion so stop.* Like, I know you think you can because of the whole "nerd culture doesn't accept me too" thing but it's not the same thing AT ALL. Just like Andre cannot relate to being a white woman in nerd culture (because yes, racialized misogyny in nerd culture is a thing) or being a woman in general.
P. Scott Thank you for telling Andre and I what we think and feel. You obviously have a deep insight into our brains that we don't have... In the definition of ‘to relate’: "to have or establish a sympathetic relationship or understanding." This does not mean we are going through the exact same things; it means we can sympathize with each other. Go be negative elsewhere.
Some people will never understand a person as cultured as Andre the Black Nerd. People want to marginalize him for his race, or his topic matter, and you can't really do that to anyone. Be who you want and who you are at heart.
I am a Gothic metal nerd who is black, so I understand completely what your saying Black nerd. It is difficult living in South Central LA. Near where the film dope was shot. I get asked all kinds of silly ass questions. Which you have addressed and more.
gumundertable Someone I know, a fellow black nerd, was told she'd go to hell because of the scifi book she wanted to write. She was also told black people don't read scifi.
I thought this was a "House Party" reboot. Cause of the hair and the fact that he is socially awkward. Glad to hear it is its own thing while still giving homage to the OG nerd stuff. Thanks for the review!
Good video Andre. I had a few "black nerd" friends growing up. They both grew up having a hard time finding friends and role models. I currently have a roommate from Ethiopia who moved here when he was adopted at 13 (both of his parents died). He lived a large portion of his life being homeless due to complications with his adopted family but now he's Pre-Med in college. He also has a difficult time finding people who he relates to because he is very different from the stereotypical American black person. People like you who break cultural molds are really important to society in my opinion. Someone shouldn't have to fit into a hyper specific mold to be considered anything, it just restrains them. I dig your personality and videos, and I appreciate the insight.
The ending of this movie was extremely powerful. It in itself made me respect the movie all together bc during the whole drug deal and naked chick scenes I kinda lost interest in the movie. The ending really saved it.
Thank this movie for coming out to understand black nerds. The media or society in general can't accept that and tend to give me bullshit for it. I get hate for not saying the word "nigga" after every goddamn sentence.
This pretty encapsulates why I love your channel Andre. I can relate to you almost 100% on the black nerd situation. Keep doing what your doing, NEVER change your name and man I need to watch this movie now.
I could not have said it any better! Keep up the good work my friend! The movie was so good and it really touch me, that I had to watch it twice. There are so many game/nerd references and hood references it was a really interesting blend, which I've dealt with my entire life. I hope everyone gets a chance to watch it.
Loved this movie. Growing being black and a nerd living in a tough neighborhood is rough. Everyday life is a balancing act. You have to be yourself & survive. great review Andre.
thank you for explaining the whole black nerd thing haha i feel people don't fully get it sometimes but honestly when i heard you explaining it i was like yes that's it exactly keep up the great work Andre
The rant about your name was so funny, 100% with you.... Why should it matter to people at all what name you use. It's not like anyone forced you to use that name. Great review, will definitely check this film out if it comes out in the UK.
To be honest, when I saw the title for this RUclips video in my sub box, I thought this was a movie made and/or starring Andre. Even though that turned out not to be the case, this looks really impressive and worth the watch. I will definitely try to go see this movie. Thanks for making this review! Keep up the great work!
Love this review, definitely want to check this one out! Also, this is why i love your channel, youre not afraid of being and expressing yourself and you clearly show it. Props Andre!
When I 1st saw the trailer to the film, I thought of myself. The film as a whole was great, but the ending, closing w/ his essay to Harvard sold me. I too, am a black nerd. HipHop nerd. I also have a band. Growing up you're constantly labeled. I was never nerdy enough or never ghetto enough, always caught in between 2 extremes or this limbo of culture appropriation. When people like Russell Simmons, Pharrell Williams, Q-tip, Lupe Fiasco, Childish Gambino, and Black Nerd Andre exist..and for great purpose, to pave the way for The Others. Considering the people who oversaw this film(Forest Whitaker, Pharrell, Diddy)..they all resonate w/ Malcolm. This film was literally dope. Entertaining and educational. I've been subscribed to you for over a yr now, and this is why. Continue to prosper bruh, cuz I get it. \\//
I've herd nothing but great things about this movie and honestly Andre you and Jeremy are who I look to for my movie reviews so I can at least lower or keep my expectations up. This is a must see for me from the review you gave on it(ha even though I wanted to see it) so from one black nerd to another..........THANKS BRUH
I am looking forward to this movie. I grew up a white kid in Oakland who drew comics and loved The Ghostbusters. I always felt like I was riding all kinds of lines. Nerdy, artist kid (I used to draw naked women to avoid being beat up-but I _still_ got beat up all the time) I listened to Hip-hop with my friends, Doors/Dylan/Dead at home around my parents and Blues & Rockabilly/surf when no one was looking. I felt like I kept about ten different lives secret and managed the interactions with four or five different sub-cultures. It feels like you don't have to be black to relate to the experience of being a kid in a black neighborhood managing appearances in a world where the punishment for not fitting in is very severe.
Andre, why does the angry side got to be the black side!? You can get them nerds to be angry too. All you have to do is change the plot and remove the villains of an old show they probably originally wanted to be cancelled when they were kids, that is being made into a summer movie for 12 year old girls and nerds rage!
That shit was dope. Being a 29 very misunderstood black guy from a family of 7 growing up in Washington DC, yea.... I can relate. The ending paper to Harvard really got me. It honestly made me feel better about my life and my resolve on staying who I am and not being a follower.
I like that your channel is called Black Nerd Comedy, because I'm black and I like "nerdy" things but it's hard to find people of colour (especially on youtube) who also like games, comics, anime, etc., but your channel ended up being easy to find :D
LOVED the review Andre. Dope and Inside Out are the two movies on top of my "I HAVE TO SEE THIS!" list. I appreciated your perspective I the term of Blerd and the issues surrounding it. Keep up the great work
I saw this movie after watching your review. I really liked it, both the review and the movie. Being a pre-teen and teenager of the 90's the music was an awesome flashback. I mean Tribe Called Quest!! Also, I agreed that his message at the end was very powerful. (I worked in a low income high school and saw what our kids had to struggle against, even the super smart ones, or especially the super smart ones.) Thanks so much for your review.I love that you celebrate who you are and your black nerdiness, you are an awesome human with "dope" stuff to say. Thanks for getting me off my couch to see that movie. Nerds rule!
Hey Andre! Thanks so much for this review. This completely went under my radar, but I will definitely be watching this movie! I may not be black, but I did grow up in a troubled neighborhood and had black friends who were SERIOUSLY black nerds! It's so refreshing to see a movie with this plot come to life, and u can't wait to see it tomorrow! See you around play cousin!!!
Man I wish I could like this video more than once. I really enjoy seeing this side of Andre. I haven't seen the movie yet but I know I'll love it just by how you reviewed it.
I loved your review. I agree with all the points you made about this movie and how we as a culture can relate to the things going on with the main characters. Thanks for your review!!!
Thank you my brother....I wasn't aware I was a nerd growing up...but now as a near 40 year old man, I recognize my nerdism and embrace it becuz I am what I am. I am a pro wrestling and hip hop nerd and I fully feel you when u talk about trying to fit in around other black ppl who try to put you down because they feel you are tryin g to be "white" or better yourself. The main reason I like you is becuz I can relate to the struggle of being a black nerd in America. BLACK NERDS UNITE!!!!!
Despite the fact that I'm a Mexican nerd, I totally related to this movie. Not to mention that the title and intro text kinda helps describe the film itself. That was a clever touch.
Thx Andre for talking about this situation for black nerds out there who are afraid to be themselves and try to act different or more "Black" and they just need someone to just say hey it's okay to Be who you are especially if your culture isn't stereotypically accepted this way and that's why subscribed to you a few years back so thank Andre a.k.a. Black Nerd
Yep, I plan to go see Dope! How could I not? I'm a black nerd/geek also, and I want to see how much this movie relates to me. Thanks for the review, Andre!
Amen. I probably need to watch that movie now. After watching the first part of your video where you described this struggle, I found I can relate sooo much. Stay black, nerd and stay the Black Nerd.
Great Review Andre. I too know where you come from as I have to deal with a lot of that stuff to being a Black Nerd. I almost forgot about this one so thanks for reminding me. Perhaps instead of giving Jurassic World more unnecessary money, I'll ask my wife to take me to see this for Father's Day with the kids. Oh wait, you said there were some tough titties in this movie... Inside Out here I come, lol!
I finally watch it after getting it for Christmas I've been begging to see this movie since your review. it was amazing as always your my go to reviewer for movies because our taste line up pretty much the same. thanks for talking about this movie and bring it to my attention Andre. also how am I supposed to eat my pound cake.
I NEED THIS MOVIE IN MY LIFE. Even though I'm not black, a nerdy Mexican living in East LA is a though crowd too!! I started dressing out of the norm, but instead 70's inspired cause it's my favorite decade. Having them, what I assume, geek out over the Hip Hop Renaissance (i.e. ATCQ, De La Soul, Leaders of the New School) was a pinochle moment for me and made me become more well-rounded about my tastes into everything around me. Thank you for the recommendation Andre!! [P.S. Also wanna see this movie cause Zöe Kravitz is my boo ;)]
Everybody I knew was geeking out so much about Jurassic World, I decided to watch Dope instead. I made the right decision. What really had me geeked about Dope, was how it's kind of a new aged version of The Wood. In more ways than one. A coming-of-age movie set in Inglewood California. But instead of flashbacks between the past and the present, the characters in the present day live like they're from the past. And that one cameo of the character from The Wood making an appearance in Dope, was the cherry on top for me!!! Hopefully this movie will at least reach cult classic status, if it can't do major numbers in theaters.
Andre, I think this is probably my favorite video of yours. You've described the life of a black nerd perfectly. I'm a black female nerd...and it is definitely a different life perception than just being black or being a nerd (and a woman, in my case). I need to see my movie! Lol
Saw Dope yesterday as a black nerd who's actually been in a similar situation not going to speak on that though. Living in Detroit stuff like this goes down regularly. But yeah andre everything you said is basically the same things that went through my head while watching this.
I remember when I first saw the trailer to dope, I didn't even realize it was a trailer to a movie I just thought it was a commercial or something on RUclips so I skipped it a few seconds before it ended, now I really want to see this movie.
I feel your pain Andre. I am the type of guy who goes to his car in the parking lot, and hear the people leaving their cars nearby lock their doors 3-4 times, you know, just to be sure (even though my car is usually as nice or nicer than theirs). And when people hear me talk, they're like, "where are you from?" like I speak in an alien dialect. I am AMERICAN, where do you think I am from? Oh but the *worst* is when people find out I like characters like Spider-man I actually get asked questions like, "why do you like a white super hero? Shouldn't you like a black superhero?" Ugh, we can totally relate. Keep repping us black nerds well.
Dope instantly became one of my favorite movies of all time. I need to see it again. I keep trying to convince my friends to go see this movie but no one believes me that it's amazing. No matter, I'll watch it again.
Ah yes...the double duty of being both black and nerd-like. It's quite the hurdle...indeed, but I wear it as a badge of honor. Race aside, I would encourage all nerd-kin out there to enjoy your culture and screw the haters. :P
Dope was one of my all time favorite movies. At the heart of the movie is the main character's exploration of himself so that he can write a narrative paper for his admission paper for Harvard. As an English teacher, I loved that aspect of the movie. Too bad I can't show it to my students.
I'll probably wait to see this movie, but it did look like it'd be an enjoyable film. :) I've had people ask me "Why does he call himself Black Nerd? That's like me saying I'm a 'White Nerd'." It irritates me. Great video - Love you!
so i completely understand what ur trying to say im a black 20 year old nerd and growing up my social life and home life were so different. i would go out and party and come home and watch anime work on computers. when i went to college it was a little more accepted by people.
Preach Andre!! I am also a black nerd and I deal with BS from both sides that's why I tend to drift to people like me (you, Childish Gambino, Tyler etc...) I am definitely gonna check this movie out. I'm just happy someone understands!
esog5 No problem! Just be yourself!

+RUTheCatalyzt Yeah, this movie and School Dance are the best black movies to come out in a while, it takes me back to Friday and House Party lol
I agree. It definitely is one of the best movies of the year. I look at it more as an updated version of Friday.

Yeah try being a black nerd in the south people think I'm a foreigner
gumundertable Black nerd from Louisiana, here. Just here to confirm.

That would be ridiculous
I think he just forgets to do it something

Haha I see what you did there.
Don't let them hate your name. Be proud. Black nerd life!!!!!!!!
This pretty encapsulates why I love your channel Andre. I can relate to you almost 100% on the black nerd situation. Keep doing what your doing, NEVER change your name and man I need to watch this movie now.
I love that you are real & honest. You say things as they lie & tell people to just deal with it. You totally rock.
How am I supposed to eat my poundcake when everyone's on that Lily.
Andre, thank you for being awesome. Seriously, don't ever stop doing what you do.
I could not have said it any better! Keep up the good work my friend! The movie was so good and it really touch me, that I had to watch it twice. Yo Andre Thank You For representing not just Black nerds But All Nerds Everywhere
Turned on this video and saw my son Shameik Moore in it. Didn't even know this movie existed but now its a "must see".

I was thinking about seeing this film and you are the only reviewer I watch that could acurately describe this.
damn Andre, this is probably your best movie review, like no joke, good job man keep up the good work =)
That shit was dope. Being a 29 very misunderstood black guy from a family of 7 growing up in Washington DC, yea.... I can relate. The ending paper to Harvard really got me. It honestly made me feel better about my life and my resolve on staying who I am and not being a follower.

What up B! This movie hit home huh... I can see it in your face. Keep up the great work!
Your best film review yet!

One of the best reviews for one of the best movies.
Speaking of hip hop nerds, Andre totally looks like Krizz Kaliko.
I finally watch it after getting it for Christmas I've been begging to see this movie since your review. it was amazing as always your my go to reviewer for movies because our taste line up pretty much the same. thanks for talking about this movie and bring it to my attention Andre. also how am I supposed to eat my pound cake.
I must see this film. I'm glad somebody took the time actually to make a film about Black Nerd Culture.
Lol
Another great review! And you can totally change your RUclips name, I did not too long ago 😊 Your name is cool and I'm happy you're sticking to it!
As a black nerd, I almost want to get down on my knees and shout to the heavens, "This was made for me!"
I just saw the movie and it was great. You took the words fought out of mouth about the concept of being a black nerd and I loved it. thank you
Who recognize the guy from Incredible Crew?
I thought I was the only one
I did, tho.
Saw Dope yesterday as a black nerd who's actually been in a similar situation not going to speak on that though. Living in Detroit stuff like this goes down regularly. But yeah andre everything you said is basically the same things that went through my head while watching this.
Kevon P Glad you enjoyed the movie and could relate to some of it.
the end credit scene was awsome!
This review actually made me want to go and see the movie like right now. It seems pretty relatable to what I dealt with in the past!
Perfect explanation my brother I'm a black nerd myself and I think you did a good job explaining that keep doing your thing peace.
This was a great review and after watching this I might actually go and see this movie. Thanks Andre!
Everyone deserves a movie that hits home for them. Sounds like a great film. I look forward to seeing it myself.
I love that you're a black nerd Andre. Don't change.
I remember when I first saw the trailer to dope, I didn't even realize it was a trailer to a movie I just thought it was a commercial or something on RUclips so I skipped it a few seconds before it ended, now I really want to see this movie.
YAY! "Why you think you're better" is my life. haha! thanks for this review!
i have not heard of this?? why haven't i?? thank you Andre!! i will be finding this in my local movie rental store and watch it!!!
Huh, this movie flew under my radar. Thanks for sharing your review Andre! I'll look into this movie now. :)
I'm a Lego nerd. And a Marvel/DC nerd. And a TF2/Valve nerd. And a Star Wars nerd. And a Halo nerd.
Love your work Andre please keep it up :)
Thanks man! I now have a new movie to look forward to.
needa make more movies like it bro
That's exactly why I call myself a black nerd! Totally agree. Thanks for the review!
You sold me on it Andre. I'll give it a try this weekend.
I really enjoyed this film. Black Nerds Unite
Being a Black Nerd sounds like being a mixed kid. Props bro.
I'm Hispanic, and this just described my life.
Saw It Last Night LOVED IT And It Was One Of My Favorite Movies This Year
Andre I am a black girl nerd lol. :) I was curious about this movie and I am glad you like it. I enjoy your channel because I can relate.
You totally made me want to see this movie, I'll catch it next week.
I'll probably wait to see this movie, but it did look like it'd be an enjoyable film. :)
I've had people ask me "Why does he call himself Black Nerd? That's like me saying I'm a 'White Nerd'." It irritates me.
Great video - Love you!
so i completely understand what ur trying to say im a black 20 year old nerd and growing up my social life and home life were so different. i would go out and party and come home and watch anime work on computers. when i went to college it was a little more accepted by people.
I love you, buddy. Thanks for giving us some insight on what you've put up with and doin' it in a funny way. Keep being black nerd
