I joined your channel to follow your journey, to experience your challenges and be supportive regardless. I must admit, your natural banter absolutely cracks me up. I truly enjoy getting to watch the transformation of your lives, your home and your fur and wool babies. You are both very unique and inspiring. Thank you for sharing the amazing history of your country and culture. Without such contributions, my country, yes I'm afraid so Scott, America would not be as diverse and rich. There has got to be away to use all that lovely seaweed as a composting! How far down or across do the roots of the 'Skunk' plant spread? Will they help with saving the crop that you put in? You watch, there will be gardeners everywhere hoping this plant keeps of slugs and snails too! Get ready for any inflation of orders down South of this wonderful Scottish plant. Life is often trail and error, but the sound and vision problem just makes me want even more to know what you two are thinking about doing next. I would not miss it for the world! Ive been waiting to watch HOW you removed the plaster on your walls because we have to remove the 'thick' plaster in our new cottage we have just bought because its damp! Unfortunately, we have to remove the plaster ourselves to keep costs down!!!! Ugh dreading the dust!!!. Before you re-point with lime mortar are you going to clean the stone?? A stonemason told us he would use an acid that cleans stone!!!? Just wondered what your stonemason recommended, and or what your plan is?? Been trawling you tube regarding this but it was great see the tools used for removing plaster, and the best technique so you dont damage the stone. Absolutelys love watching your videos. You are not repetitive, you are just showing us your daily life and the jobs that need to be done, and I for one appreciate all that you share. One request though Katie, please can you show us how you make your bread and how you store your wheat berries / flour. Oh Scott, I love books too. Please, please can we see your library once you have done it. I love those shelves!!! I am so excitied to see the cottage done how you want it to be. Thank you guys for sharing your life with us....I for one appreciate it, and the moment I hear that intro.....all stress leaves me. Its magical.

    • @TheScottishIsle
      @TheScottishIsle  2 месяца назад +1

      Hurrah for you guys having a go yourself! Well, I tried brick acid first, and it did absolutely very little to clean the stone, it still needs scrubbed after. Then I used paint stripper on the old paint over some of the stones; that worked well. But the best thing for removing old soot and plaster to really clean the stones, we found, is a power drill with a wire brush attachment. Skip the acid step and go straight for that. Our stonemason told us do a little trial patch first, because depending on what stone you have, it could burnish the surface. Ours is fine, though! We will completely clean the stone on the chimneybreast, but the rest of the stonework won't need cleaning off after pointing, as we're (probably!) going to paint straight over it with breathable paint. If you decide to do the same, our 'mason said don't use limewash as it stains, wipes off on your clothes, and needs re-done...annually! But it imperatively, 100%, unequivocally MUST be breathable. Hope that's helpful! We appreciate you watching. Kx

    Love the "ta dah!"and isn't it beautiful! Having done similar (when many years younger) can only admire all the effort put in and the ache of the body from repetitive jar back as one keeps on "beating the lag out of the stones"! Glad that l no longer have to do the like but sincerely enjoy the memories evoked!😅And ld only wet sand to catch the fall out and brush up at the time,generator was unreliable,and budget tight then. You make all funny and you're a delightful pair.Thankyou,and l'll put the kettle on....best wishes,Julia. Brisbane, Australia 🇦🇺 ❤ 😀 🪃

    Anyway, that little stone shed could be restored fairly easily. The cracks and the corners of the building could be repaired and reinforced with rebar, and a new floor of local flagstone. New roof of course. I'd say go for it, when the time is right!

    Hi , really enjoying the channel. Re the constant dust. Maybe of some help. We converted an old barn with internal walls covered in lime mortar. We found using a fine water spray to spray the wall before hand helped but also to spray the air periodically as it pulls the dust down with it.
    But yes the dust gets everywhere and is a nightmare to live in whilst completing the renovation. Stick at it, worth it in the end !

    Looks like the "Boat Shed" was modeled on the traditional hebridean barn (best example nowadays is the one at Applecross) , with its stone pillars and open sides, which allowed a covered space for drying hay or grain and for winnowing. I'm guessing the boat shed was much later, though and (like the other stone shed that you showed) built by the owners father, who clearly had an interest in traditional buildings.

      No, the walls need to 'breathe', or they'll be running with moisture. That's why you use lime instead of cement, and breathable paint rather than normal emulsion. Kx

    Ma y be a daft question, but, could you rig a small mesh fence down near the water that would trap some seaweed? Also can seaweed be used in some way.
    The more I see of your videos the more relaxed you both appear in your conversation on film.
