As a diehard Victory Gundam fan I completely agree. That show is for sick individuals. I really enjoyed this video, it's nice to see someone point out how the AUs make Gundam very accessible. Oddly enough, I have friends who watched Unicorn and Hathaway standalone and enjoyed. I can't imagine caring about either of those stories without knowing what came before. Once again, I really enjoyed this video.
Thank you so much!! Laughed pretty hard at the Victory Gundam comment! And yeah I think some of the AU's are really great places to start! Definitely wouldn't appreciate unicorn or hathaway as much if I didn't watch previous UC series.
You healed the 20 years of suffering and resentment I felt toward Gundam as a franchise. All I’ve seen was Wing and I just didn’t understand it. Now I know I’m not a moron (at least not because of this).
Yeahhh I find Wing a bit obtuse. It's pretty complicated with all its moving parts, factions double crossing each other every 5 episodes and long monologue sections 😅 I don't blame anybody for being confused since I certainly was haha, and that was after watching a bunch of other series too
I got the entry grade Lah Gundam Gunpla as a Christmas present this year. I had next to no info about the Gundam series, but the building process was very fun and the model is fun to put into different cool poses. And that's how I got interested in the series! This video was very informative so thank you, I now have a good idea of where to start watching. I was thinking of checking the Universal Century entries first and then move on to the other timelines. I intend to watch the entire series eventually. I've watched all of One Piece, Gintama, Naruto (+ Shippuden) and Dragon Ball (+Z & Super), so I have a little bit of experience with longer anime, but over 800 episodes of anything is no small feat lol
Ohh welcome to Gundam! I got more interested after building a kit too so om glad my video could help somewhat! Having finished every series now it was a lot of fun so I hope you end up enjoying as much as possible!
I agreed with your assessment of 00 being a good starting point, but I think another selling point of starting with 00 is that it effectively takes place in our own world, in the Anno Domini timeline, and has direct references to real world history as part of both its world building and commentary.
WFM was definitely a great start point for me. It left me wanting to see what else the franchise I’ve only vaguely heard of had to offer so I jumped into the original series and now I’m deep in the UC trenches.
Aye need a gundam game to play search up exvs if ya like fighting games still gets updated till this day has everything gundam in it literally and they add more every couple of months
20:36 loved metaverse tbh especially last year when I was fed up with the anime fandom and just couldn't get into anything else anymore. Short but good
Do not put off Turn A!!! It is easily Tomino's magnum opus. I think watching it last is the most damaging advice that people give for such a good show. Knowing that a Borjarnon is actually a Zaku, the Shining Finger (which is only done once) is a reference to G Gundam, or that the GX shows up for 0.05 seconds doesnt make you appreciate the show more. Most people can barely make it through 1 series, let alone all of them just to watch Turn A. Its not just a good Gundam anime, its a good anime in general that doesnt deserve to be slept on as much as it is. If anything, Build Fighters requires much more series knowledge to appreciate but no one ever recommends that to be viewed last.
I've gone through it now, I probbably wouldn't say save it till last but you definitely get more out of it after watching a lot of gundam and that's not just referential. It's thematic, it's narrative feels purpose built to comment on Gundam as a whole just like Unicorn to me so watching a few series first would give you more to chew on imo
This might be controversial but I recommend the Cosmic Era series (Gundam Seed & Seed Destiny) for the people who want to get familiar with Universal Century but can't stand the old animation of the early one Because Seed & Seed Destiny are basically a modern retelling of 0079 & Zeta
I think Seed is an okay start but I don't think i'd ever offer them as a replacement for 79 and Zeta, aside from similar suits and some ideas they aren't very comparable imo ... also the older series look great and I think people should give them a shot
Ayyyy, Holy Orders (Be Just or Be Dead) from Guilty Gear! Song made me sit up straight, also great video! I've been wanting to get into gundam and this really helps me out!
I never really got the hype on how "Confusing" the timeline/watch order is, UC has a pretty straight foward order and a lot of the other ones are self contained
@@TrentinArt Of course, im not down playing the potential usefullness of this video. My main issue is the people who make it seem more confusing then they have too which I believe puts off people from starting the series.
@@projectmessiah Potentially yeah but I also think some series are actually a bit confusing for people and while it isnt that hard to research everything yourself it does take some effort, so stuff like this can help simplify things. Plus people have directly asked me where to start so this might help 😅
I don't find it confusing per se, but more "what is the minimum I must watch and in what order" because most of the UC stuff are ANCIENT and my zoomer eyes can't stand watching animations like that
G Gundam is to the Gundam world what a California roll is to the sushi world. If you watch G Gundam first, you might probably misunderstand what Gundam truly is.
I think it depends, like I say in the video since I talk about Shounen manga a lot it might be an appealing first entry to people who watch my videos. I also think G Gundam actually has strong thematic ties to the series overall, its not as distant as most people think to the other series
I grew up with (but barely remember) 0079, Gundam Wing, and G Gundam, but hadn't consumed or done anything Gundam related for 20 years since. I accidentally got back into Gundam through Gundam Hathaway because it just happened to show up on Netflix. I agree with your assessment that Hathaway is NOT beginner friendly (I had to do a lot of side research to understand the world and characters), but in Hathaway's defense the animation is top notch and contains the best fight scenes and dogfights I had ever seen up to that point. I tried Witch from Mercury, but other than the prologue it's not hooking me as much. I'm one episode in (excluding the prologue), and the fight scene felt too easy for Suletta. It was like watching someone bring a gun to a knife fight. I'll give it another shot, but I hope the future fights end up showing more pilot skill.
Ohhh yeah I'm not sure how confusing Hathaway would be going in unrefreshed since it relies on a lot of pre-established stuff, it does look amazing though! I think G-Witch probably has some of the less brutal fights especially at the beginning due to its setting but theres a few in mind that definitely stand out, more for narrative reasons then for the battles themselves though
I think the important thing is, if a gundam series interests you, it's ok to immerse yourself in that series alone before branching out into others to see if they strike your fancy. I wasn't big on Gundam Wing when it first released, and didn't get THAT into G gundam, it was actually 0083 that i ended up liking and it caused me to go back and watch the original Mobile Suit gundam series. I then tapped out on Seed and came back again with IBO.
As a long time veteran of the Gundam franchise. I greatly appreciate this viewing guide . Fan favs are Seed , seed destiny, g Gundam, Gundam unicorn OVAs , 00 and Wing , Origin , build divers and witch from Mercury. Seen also , War in the pocket , 8th ms team, 0079 tv series, F91 and SD Gundam world heroes and chars counterattack movie , Hathaway movie , Narrative. Haven't seen zeta, x or Victory age but I do love the art style and level 5 games ( little battlers experience, yokai watch, megaton musashi wired)
I certainly recommend you get to Zeta soon if you haven't already. Tbh you should've atleast watched Zeta before CCA. Gundam ZZ is also another show yoy should've watched before CCA, it was also important for Unicorn. If you loved Wing then make sure to watch Gundam X. It's one of the best Gundam show in my opinion. It's just so good and there's a reason those who've watched it swear by it. With Age I don't really recommend. It was built as a game first and a show second and it really shows in the final products lackluster writing and pacing. I'd honestly say Seed Destiny is better. Victory Gundam is... well it's up to you. I personally love the show but I get why others don't.
2 disagreements: 1. I’d argue that Thunderbolt should either be 0 stars or, at most, 1 star given how relatively contained the story is. I had a friend who started the UC with Thunderbolt when she got into the franchise after waiting WfM. Given how Io’s not your typical Gundam pilot, the XO’s constant attempts to undermine the captain, and the Feds using cadet pilots, she ended up thinking that Zeon was supposed the morally gray good guys who had to do questionable things to survive. And before anyone argues “Well, the Federation ISN’T all that great”, in the OG series Zeon was described as literal space Nazis by their own leaders. 2. 0083 should probably be at least 2 stars. I say this because 0083 was my first experience with the UC. Yes, there are some major flaws with the series like the romance with Nina and annoying, one-note characters like Moncha (and Keith to a lesser extent), but I’d argue the story itself can perfectly understood and enjoyed without any prior knowledge of the UC. There’s basically no mention of Newtype shenanigans which can turn some people off if they dive into that aspect too quickly, and the One Year War is presented in such a way that you can figure out who the major players were, but also the lasting impact that the war had on both sides without feeling like you’re missing some crucial piece of the puzzle to fully appreciate the story you’re currently watching. In fact, it made me curious about it enough that I actually wanted to go back and watch the OG series so I could learn more about this all-consuming conflict. Best way to describe it to newer fans would be like hearing about the Calamity War in IBO.
I think Thunderbolt being so standalone is a big reason why id say its more newcomer friendly, if they like the idea and vibes its a good first entry plus its short. Someone being confused with the conflict and "who'se good and bad" can be rectified by watching more Gundam anyway so it's not really a problem. I also think that isnt really the point of the franchise or the UC anyway. 0083 is cool! But its slap bang in the middle of OG and Zeta, I think its better to have watched 79 at least, tho im pretty sure I said if it appeals to you go for it for its own vibes. Sure you can probably understand the story without seeing anything else but I think you get more out of it having seen some gundam prior. Everyone's takes are going to be different though, these are just mine and likely will change overtime, thanks for your perspective on things!
Just wanna say, though turn A technically connects to other series, it doesn't hold any direct bearing on its story. Turn A explores how it's world ended up the way it is, but doesn't really elaborate on what came prior It's basically just Easter eggs, like some "ancient" mobile suits that get excavated being grunt suits from prior series. Personally I think it's not only a perfectly fine jumping on point, but probably one of the best stand-alone experiences the franchise has to offer. It's written by the same guy as G-Witch and it really shows in how it blends cute slice-of-life elements into its more serious war-drama arcs.
I have since seen Turn A (and EVERYTHING besides G reco now) And yeah you don't really need to watch any previous series but I think you get a lot more out of it from the suit cameos and it's overall themes and udeas if your familiar with other Gundam shows. I still wouldn't recommend it as a first show in general though unless you know someone who would really like some of its more unique elements (which could be said for almost any of them). So maybe I'd give it 1 star or something I thought Turn A was way more of Tominos baby and had multiple writers? Though it's cool there's some connecting tissue with Ichirō Ōkouchi
I listened to people hype up Turn A as the last Gundam show you watch, but that left me kinda underwhelmed by the show, which I otherwise love. The phrase "everything ends with Turn A" is thrown around quite a bit by people who have never seen it, but it's only a thematic end to the first 20 years of Gundam, and ultimately standalone. I'd put it next to Build and X as something best enjoyed by fans, but still digestible for new viewers. To clarify with the manga stuff: The Origin anime is an adaptation of the manga, not the other way around, making it non-canon to the rest of UC Gundam. CDA has a sequel similar to The Origin titled Zeta Define, which retells Zeta Gundam. 00 over SEED is crazy to me but that's largely because I am an insane SEED Destiny defender and an A wakening of the Trailblazer hater. Otherwise great video that will hopefully bring more people on board with the series!
Thanks for your insight into Turn A!! Oh I know the Origin manga came first, maybe I worded it weirdly in my script haha but wanted to bring it up as a lot of people watch the channel for manga related stuff. Definitley think Seed is a decent place to begin but 00 is a bit more digestible, and I'd be reversed on Destiny and trailblazer but everyone has different favourites since theres so many different gundam series! Since this script was written a while ago i might've moved Seed up to 3 stars now that its being chatted more about thanks to Freedom being released, but I hope the video gets some people interested and thanks for your comment!
Excellent video, thank you. Decided to start from the newest series and walk backwards, until I inevitably hit the Season that will be just too old for me to enjoy. So far so good.
My experience with Gundam went a little something like this: - Finish Armored Core 6 - [New Intrest Aquired] - Microsoft Anime Month happens - "The Witch From Mercury? Only $10 and I can save it to my PC..." - Binge watch 25 eps in 2 days. - "Oh my god that was so much better than I was expecting!" - Discovers IBO - $20 later, que metaphorical 'Kick to the balls' - [New Intrest Aquired] And now I have a shelf of Gunpla and am going through UC at a somewhat reasonable pace, and I don't regret spending that $10.
Awww awesome, I'm glad stuff like AC6 and WFM came out when they did since it increases interest in mecha s lot and drew me deeper too! Enjoy the rest of the UC!!
The Origin anime is a direct adaptation of select chapters from the manga of the same name. As such they are a stand-alone reimagining of Mobile Suit Gundam and not in the same continuity. There are far too many incongruences and irreconcilable continuity issues.
Damn I started with the Origin, thought it was a great start for its animation and character setup. But now I’m on MS Gundam and the animation is a stark contrast
Since I watched it last it could be a decent start in some ways, the jump in animation might be kinda wild though yeah, though I do love how the OG looks
Yup this was the current main franchise at the time so nothing really for you here if you already love Gundam. I thought mentioning the weirder smaller side stuff might be kinda redundant
Easy. Watch them all. If you can watch all of One Piece you can watch all of Gundam. It’s about the same number of episodes. (One piece is still increasing though lol)
Might I suggest starting out with "Gundam Build Divers Re:Rise?" As part of the Build Fighters/Build Divers sub-franchise it's much more light-hearted than most things Gundam, which makes Episode 12's plot twist that much more of a gut punch, which in turn makes the series as a whole that much more interesting.
At least the timeline is easier to follow then nauverse/fate series.. regardless the Universal century gets complicated especially when you add Manga and games into the mix. Gundam is a hard thing to jump into if you weren’t young and started off in toonami where you just see giant robots fighting as a kid, and then you get the games making you forget its politics, war and drama. To me I always watched the stuff outside of uc before I jumped into the uc and I started with The Original series of course I liked watching it in the movie format but they did skip a few things in the movies that I liked.
The UC can be daunting yeah, but theres definitely a few good places to start which was more where I was going with this video rather than full on explaining the timelines
@@TrentinArt Completely understandable. I do agree with your rankings to especially with Builders because builders you can jump into and from Reiji perspective he doesn’t knows what Gundam is being from where he was. So you also learn things about Gundam through it. I think no matter what though most content that comes from the one year war is what usually catches me. I mean even games that take place during one year war is great Zeonic Front and Code Fairy are great. I think surprisingly SD Gundam Genesis breaks the mangas down pretty well and places them on a good timeline in game
Everybody know they should starts with G-unit manga and G-Saviour as their first entry into Gundam series! This is a joke, please, uh, don't colony drop me. :(
nah man I disagree with gundam unicorn man reason: even though it connected to the OG, It could be a stand alone too, you could know nothing about the original and still watch gundam Unicorn, I argue it actually batter to watch it first. lastly for the og time line, Unicorn is the best
Im pretty adamant on Unicorn at least for me since I think it gets infinitely more valuable the more Gundam and the more UC you watch. It's an incredibly comforting and profound destination to hundreds of episodes of war and conflict. You get a lot out of it seeing the parallel's between kamille, amuro and Banagher, all the clone stuff with Marida and Full Frontal, and just in general it is an answer for the franchise, at least too me
do not watch the original gundam anime, read Gundam: The Origin. Redrawing of the show with art that puts stuff in museums to shame while fixing a lot of the plot
Well maybe Gundam isnt for you since its not always big robots do boom boom, arguably even G Gundam which is the most of that is also one of the most character driven and romantic stories
As if Yuri and yaoi never existed in Japan. Not everything is woke propaganda and if you can't enjoy a show just because two characters are gay you're pretty insecure
As a diehard Victory Gundam fan I completely agree. That show is for sick individuals.

Awww glad I could help, enjoy!
My favorite besides the obvious Universal century is the cosmic era ( the SEED shows and movies)
My experience with Gundam went a little something like this:
- Finish Armored Core 6
- [New Intrest Aquired]
- Microsoft Anime Month happens
- "The Witch From Mercury? Only $10 and I can save it to my PC..."
- Binge watch 25 eps in 2 days.
- "Oh my god that was so much better than I was expecting!"
- Discovers IBO
- $20 later, que metaphorical 'Kick to the balls'
- [New Intrest Aquired]
And now I have a shelf of Gunpla and am going through UC at a somewhat reasonable pace, and I don't regret spending that $10.
Watched your video to see if I missed anything… nope, seen them all.
Yup this was the current main franchise at the time so nothing really for you here if you already love Gundam. I thought mentioning the weirder smaller side stuff might be kinda redundant
@ I was just wondering if I missed anything. Can’t believe I’ve actually watched everything.
Easy. Watch them all. If you can watch all of One Piece you can watch all of Gundam. It’s about the same number of episodes. (One piece is still increasing though lol)
I watched and finished IBO and wow its so freaking peak. Im currently starting 00
Awesome!! IBO was my first too, hope you enjoy 00!
@@TrentinArt Just finished 00! Its peak!!!
20:31 zuck scare warning
Might I suggest starting out with "Gundam Build Divers Re:Rise?" As part of the Build Fighters/Build Divers sub-franchise it's much more light-hearted than most things Gundam, which makes Episode 12's plot twist that much more of a gut punch, which in turn makes the series as a whole that much more interesting.
I think Re:Rise could be a good place to start yeah! Especially for people who like or are used to more modern anime, it has a bit of everything!
I want to go back to the 00 universe so bad
G Saviour is the secret perfect start to Gundam but that info is far too powerful for the public to know 😏
gundam, fate and bakemonogatari 3 shows that have nothing in common exept a confusing watch order
Ahahaha mainly down to their number of entries, but yep!
Gundam is way more confusing than fate. Fate just has a lot of disconnected shows
nah man I disagree with gundam unicorn man
reason: even though it connected to the OG, It could be a stand alone too, you could know nothing about the original and still watch gundam Unicorn, I argue it actually batter to watch it first. lastly for the og time line, Unicorn is the best
and because of this, I'm gonna give you a dislike.
BUT great video tho 9/10
Im pretty adamant on Unicorn at least for me since I think it gets infinitely more valuable the more Gundam and the more UC you watch. It's an incredibly comforting and profound destination to hundreds of episodes of war and conflict. You get a lot out of it seeing the parallel's between kamille, amuro and Banagher, all the clone stuff with Marida and Full Frontal, and just in general it is an answer for the franchise, at least too me
Thank you, tho dislikes can really hurt the cannel and id maintain that disagree =/ disliking , ty for your honesty though
Gundam seed and Wing
i watch ibo because i was depressed and sad
Awww hope it provided some comfort to you!
UC Watch Order video when ? 👀
Probbably not since idk if I have much of worth to say! But I'd love to talk about more Gundam!
34:20
What if i start with sd Gundam instead?
If you enjoy it the heck go straight ahead. I've personally never seen it, but I'd imagine you might miss some references potentially
absolute madlad.
do not watch the original gundam anime, read Gundam: The Origin. Redrawing of the show with art that puts stuff in museums to shame while fixing a lot of the plot
Gundam the Origin is brilliant, I just wish the physicals werent so expensive but you really get what you pay for
@@TrentinArt totally agree it is really expensive but it’s one of the few manga really worth owning physically.
I found Witch of Mercury unbearable. I want big robots do boom boom, not high school girls
Well maybe Gundam isnt for you since its not always big robots do boom boom, arguably even G Gundam which is the most of that is also one of the most character driven and romantic stories
WfM was big robot boom boom in a school idk why you disliked it. Also gundam has a lot more to offer than "big robot boom boom".
Is this rage bait?
Lgbt good, half naked women problematic. Riiiiiiight.
huh did i say women naked was problematic here? ... idk i think more people should be naked tbh
Whitch of mercury SUCKS.... GAY PROPAGANDA!
Cope and seethe I will now go kiss some boys to spite you
As if Yuri and yaoi never existed in Japan. Not everything is woke propaganda and if you can't enjoy a show just because two characters are gay you're pretty insecure
you don't like seeing girls kiss and touch each other? Someone's projecting
i watch ibo because i was depressed and sad
I watched ibo because it was bad ass AF . It was just a coincidence I'm also depressed and sad lol 😆
