I’m honestly shocked at this revie but it could be how each one of us are using it. I use a GoPro hero 8 and record hours of video is 1080 and 4K. Never once has it failed or taken more than 30 minutes for 2 full hours of 4K. I have 2 of these and bothe work flawlessly and perfectly.
Good review and confirm to every word you have said. I am looking for a desktop interface that help me save/open. edit files stored on MPWP while the last is connected wirelessly to my laptop. any suggestions?
the only thing I would want this for is to back up my SD cards when I'm in the field without a laptop. I could care less about the wireless performance. would you suggest it for someone like me?
I agree completely; the main purpose for me is the same as you - being able to backup SD-cards without a computer. I’m about to order one, as it seems very good for this purpose. I think that some of the failures that people have had, is that they forget this is not an SSD, so it cannot be moved during operation.
Thanks for this dude yeah drive is extremely underwhelming & under performing I just got mine today & have spent hours trying to do the things I brought it for & pretty much nothing works 🤷🏽♂️ I’m sending it back tomorrow!! It’s so hard to find a good wireless drive for a good price for my 2020 MacBook Pro which only has lightning ports non lightning through adapter drives seem to have problems because of the power usage & requirements 🤦🏽♂️ what solution did you find in the end & what drive you using now ?
I have no idea why you got so many downvotes for your opinion. I got pretty much scope of issues and my 2TB SSD one day just stopped working. This product has some really great ideas, but overall it's no go for me anymore.
I used mine for a year. Worked well. Great idea. Went on a holiday, loaded pics while away. Great idea still. Get home and copied my pics from the WD Pro to my computer. It failed half way through. Then all lights flashed. Rest I could not copy. Contacted WD, sent it to overseas to replace it under warranty. They would not try to copy the valuable holiday pics for me. Got the new drive, worked till I got back from next holiday..............same again. Luckily I kept the originals on the SD Cards. Out of warranty. Did so much online searching for solutions. Gave up.
And I thought I had a lemon… turns out a lot of us are having the same problem. Used mine to backup my drone footage while on an extended vacation… I could not get it to work properly. Copied SD card files for hours! So frustrating. Buy at your own risk.
@@clexdigital Thanks a lot Alex!! I mean wirelessly though, I have a 500 gigas folder that I need to back up in my drive but I want to learn how to do it wirelessly.
It's possible - as transferring files wirelessly is its intended purpose - but I wouldn't recommend it. Transferring 500gb takes long enough as is wired, wirelessly would just take so much longer. But to do so (and this is from memory as I haven't done it in a long time), you'll need to turn the drive on, connect to its wifi (the password should be on the drive) then it should populate as a NAS
@@clexdigital I think I better do it wired and then for future files I will do it over the wifi. Would you have a video that shows how to do it wireless?? It's just that I have on youtube and manuals for days and I still have not clue how to do it, all show through SD cards and usb devices but that is not what I am looking for. I appreciate your time and help, seriously, thanks man.
I think Alex should be heeded. I bought mine in November 2020, and mine still will not reliably automatically copy from Photos on my new iPad Pro. After some hours, I did get most SD and USB thumbnails to work OK, but not all thumbnails become visible, and believe me I have sent may hours doing all the the WD website suggests. My best advice is to open up the device dashboard via the WD website supplied ip adresss, and from you can set the units Power Optimisation setting to the left (OFF) so that the thumbnails should copy, and you also can set up the various other Auto copy functions. I did all this, including returning all settings to factory, and rebooting not once, but twice, before any thumbnails became visible. They take ages to build, but still no thumbnail for every image file! Hugely frustrating if you bought this unit for photography, since you often have no idea which saved file is which. It is also astoundingly slow sending Photos files also over wifi, much better to port files across via SD cards. I still cant get a fast copy over a direct USB lead. I will persevere, but frankly, it is poor. I do not trust it out in the field on a paid assignment.
I use mine to save my videos from my GoPro no issues great product thinking of getting 2nd one , maybe your not using it right I can upload a 128 gb card in 10mins
This is a bad producto work ffine for a time but then the product dont work, first the plex server and then this only blinkind the blue ligths, never again i buy a wd product
I cannot a agree more with you, this product is terrible, i had it replaced twice and now want to sell it . Cannot connect to wifi, etc you are lucky you can see it, Mine doesn’t show up most of time.
I just got one and does not start up properly. The bottom light starts and stays on but the top light just flashes, its meant to mean its connecting to the WiFi chip and setting up but after 30 odd seconds it would give up and then all the lights would flash fast indicating a technical issue
I have a MacBook Pro 2105. I'll have to check what capabilities it has specifically, I'll get back to you soon! Edit: it seems that it does have both. (And thinking back, my normal wifi router has both 2.4 and 5ghz and I remember being able to connect to both)
Hopeless product. I bought two of these and both suffer from a defect harddrive (click sound) and all lamps blinking just after a few days. These drives should be recalled to WD.
The "click sounds" are the internals of the hard drive working. Think of it as a record player and moving the needle where you want to hear the right song. Now which lights are you referring to? The ones on the top or the 4 on the corner? If it's the ones on top, one is the wifi that stays on when your laptop or phone are connected. The second one is the data being exchanged from your source to the passport. If the lights are blinking on the corner and it's only one, this indicates that you need to recharge the passport. Now when charging the passport, make sure that all 4 lights are visible, this will indicate that the charge is complete. Charging might and in some cases take a few hours. I would set the passport on charge before I would go to bed, so I won't stand around waiting. You can always check your battery status if you log into (my passport dot local). You have to set up an account first, then log on. Hope this helps.
Fantastic review- straight to the point no BS- no 5 mins of begging for subscribers- well done. Subbed.

If I want this device just for the sd feature and regular use as an external drive for photography, is that bad? I checked the 2t for 100$ in amazon.
