I can feel your struggle. It's something companies should be aware about

I am a physicin with 45 years of practice under my belt, and I went through my undergraduate training in chemistry with many engineering students, and I've had many engineers as patients. After a few years of exposure to this particular cohort of humanity, I came to the conclusion many years ago that the prevalence of Autistic spectrum disorder is extremely high in all branches of engineering. As it is in medicine (I'm modestly afflicted, although I feel that it has been advantageous for my work, not so much for my personal life). When I say "autistic" I'm generally referriing to what used to be known as Asperger's syndrome. It really represents people on the most functional end of the ASD continuum -- highly intelligent, socially ham-fisted, usually with an identifiable savant ability, and often accompanied by a strong sense of social justice.
Honestly, my experience of engineers as patients is that many of them are socially awkward, which may account for some of what you perceive as inattention or disrespect. From my position on this side of my screen, you appear to be a bit of a looker, which can present problems for men, especially the young variety, in commuication with young women. As far as what you can do to smooth these interactions -- a sense of humor, forbearance and a thick skin, are most likely to make your life easier..

I have noticed the Autistic's sense that justice must be primary. Maybe it has to do with math and logic right-and-wrong fixation.

Pretty amazing for a so call physician who can't spell to give this type of assessment!

What you were talking about when it comes to people not listening, I find this more of a generalized expression and not something specific to women. One of the things that I mainly find is that since Engineers are inherently smart, seeing professionalism and confidence is quite respected because it typically shows that you have a lot of skill in what you do. Women in general are more reserved, and I can't blame you when there aren't many of you in the field. But women and men alike really need to express and show their confidence. I have a boss I know that is a woman engineer and because of how much confidence and respect she has everyone just shuts up as soon as she walks in the room even with people that do not know her.

Interns generally don't know much, regardless of their gender. Usually just give interns some work and see how they deal with it and go from there. There is a range of personalities with engineers, but generally my experience is that we just like to get to the point of the problem, define a plan, and get moving. I gauge a person by their contributions to a discussion, not gender, but everyone is different. Good luck out there.

females having more emotions is a misconception actually. A lot of men suffer from normative male alexithymia. Think of it as color blindness for your emotions. Men at an early age are treated differently from women and they do not examine there emotions or talk about there emotions so never develop the ability to understand them. They just know something is wrong and default to frustration because they do not know what is going on. They also don't have opportunities to show emotions because men are expected to be stoic.
On the other side i was not aware this is how female engineers felt day to day in the workforce. My mother was a engineer and i did not know she could feel this isolated... she did often say she had to outperform in order to be heard... i am not an engineer (yet) but i will defiantly try and be more aware of my unconscious biases when addressing female engineers in the workplace... so far in my experience the female engineers seem to be more on top of what's going on, I will try and encourage and highlight there brilliance more... not that it will mean much coming from a technician lol.
Really relate to the feeling of isolation though, i studied architecture (dropped out) and im now going back for Aerospace but on a day to day working as a chem tech i feel isolated all the time because there is this feeling i should contribute more but i simply lack the understanding of the subject to be of any use.

A man’s biggest enemy is his ego. They only demean themselves when they attempt to demean you. Don’t ask for respect, show them you’re worth the respect and quietly carry on like a boss.

I don't mind female engineers, but their ego is high.
Dudes though, are chill, sure there are some, but at least they are the smart ones and have their place.

Engineering is a tough field. Schooling is tough and profession is tough. Everything this woman engineer is saying is also a man’s experience. 54 years of experience talking. You have to be right every time because physics/nature will out your mistake. With no margin for error, successful engineers are not fun people to work with. I’ve had my ideas ignored many many times, even as the senior man in the room. So I can tell by this woman’s story that she has walked the walk, but her experiences are typical of any engineer, and not special to a woman.

I’m a female Naval Architect/Marine engineer, I feel the outsider boys club. 2% of engineers in my field are female. Repeating yourself over and over is exhausting but what we have to do from my experience. Many times they will just talk over me when I’m talking and leading meetings. There is a need to practice being assertive to keep moving forward.
