Apparently in japanese work culture its a normal occurrence that the boss falls asleep in meetings if the topic is not of high importance/he trusts his employees.
Some of the Virtual Boy games weren't bad game play wise. They were just released on a system where 3D technology wasn't perfected and had unfortunate side-effects when not used responsibly.
The sleeping boss thing really made me laugh. Over here it's seen as a "I'm not interested" thing, but in most Japanese media I've seen, it more a "I'm already sold, I don't need to see anymore" thing.
As a VirtualBoy owner, I can say it's very sad there's a great deal of misinformation about it, even now. People _still_ think it causes headaches and damages eyesight and all that crap. The Virtual Boy actually when properly calibrated, has a brilliantly vivid display and is a ton of fun to use.
The virtual boy was simply way too ahead of it's time. VR was not well understood at the time and the technology was expensive (forcing the monochrome red) and very primitive.
I think they should give the virtual boy another shot seeing how far VR tech has come ever since. Sure, they released the Switch VR add-on, but that’s a rather limited approach that still doesn’t fully embrace all of VR’s features compared to a proper headset. Throw in a refined power glove that actually works and we’ll have something going on here.
I love the VB. Got one last year and it's actually quite immersive. Not that it feels like you're living in true VR, but rather in the unique world of the Virtual Boy. Had it not been for the limited color palette, I doubt VB would feel as unique as it does.
I like Miyamoto’s point about its success as a toy, I never really thought about it that way. I know that wasn’t the plan to have the virtual boy be a toy, but it’s a good spin
Nice to hear you here, LGR! I found one of these around six years ago at a local thrift for $2.92. Had everything including a copy of Galactic Pinball but missing the padded eye covers. It worked fine but after awhile the graphics went out. I read that it has to do with the ribbons that attach to the mirrors detach over time, and it's just waiting until I get the time to work on it. It's a fun system in short bursts. Any longer and I fear my eyes would bug out :)
great video I'm very happy to hear that the Virtual Boy didn't actually tarnish Gunpei Yukoi reputation at Nintendo cause that never sat well with me especially after all the successes he had prior
Did you know that in Nintendo Labo's Discover mode, there are 3 characters Prof. Riggs, Plaise Allatyme, and Lerna Lotte, who each have their own personality and backstories that can be revealed if the player chooses certain dialog choices to have the characters go off on a tangent? The Trio are the reason Discover Mode is my favorite part of any Nintendo Labo kit.
I like the way Nintendo figured out why they failed and used that knowledge to improve their future developments. They don't just give up on something, they wait, learn and try again.
Did You Know ? Jack Bros was the very first Shin Megami Tensei game released in America, It stars Jack Frost a popular monster from the Shin Megami Tensei games. Its also the other best game from the Virtual Boy behind Wario Land VB
Although I was born in 1996, I owned a Virtual Boy in the early 2000s. I found it at a pawn shop and convinced my mom to buy it, somehow. The console caused pretty noticeable eyestrain after a little while and gave me some of my first headaches. Despite its massive flaws, I'm proud to say I owned one and got to play this tragic mistake of a console.
As a person who is 100% blind in one eye, the Virtual boy is actually very enjoyable to play. You just have to adjust the "3D view" slider to one eye and BOOM! You have a Gameboy with a red LED display that isn't blurry. Give it a try sometime and you'll see what I mean. I still have mine and enjoy playing it for hours on end. I still have yet to complete my game collection. (only 3 left to go!)
I think there is a mistake with the caption of the person at 7:02, referencing an earlier person, rather than the person being discussed. Still a wonderful video!
I played a ton of Virtual Boy when I was a kid. When my mom bought it for me, it was just $30. My favorite games were Wario Land and Panic Bomber, though I also played quite a bit of Mario's Tennis and Red Alarm.
It’s quite s shame that the 3DS never got any Virtual Boy games in its Virtual Console lineup. Heck it’s even more of a shame that Virtual Boy Wario Land never got remade for that console.
I think they could have included it all in a single cartridge. Maybe make it a 100 dollar special addition in October 2015. 20 years after the launch of the virtual boy.
Another thing that crippled it was the fact that people were too lazy to adjust it properly before playing. I brought mine to gatherings in the past and made sure to tell everyone who played how to make adjustments properly and they all loved it. Also I had an AC adapter which helped I guess.
Luigi's Mansion 3, which was released after this video, also features a device called the Virtual Boo which has the same function as the gameboy horror and dual scream. When E Gadd gives the Virtual Boo to Luigi, he mentions how once he finishes the marketing materials it will surely fly off the shelfs.
I remembered when the commercial of this was aired on tv. Just seeing that kid trying to run away from the Virtual Boy used to give me nightmare fuels.
I had one of these and wish I still did just for nostalgia. Nothing like trying to find a comfortable way to play it. Best way was to lay down and balance the thing on your face.
I was diagnosed with chronic migraines in the 3rd grade, have headaches every other day and least 2 severe migraines a month. My older brother had the Virtual boy and 6 games. This was the only thing he wouldn't let me touch due to being prone to migraines. I havent seen a virtual boy first hand outside of him. It's so odd and quirky.
I love how I trust you to make the decision without my supervision was conveyed through sleeping. I can't put my finger on it but there's something really cool about that.
@@Mario87456 its not reggies fault he had been working at nintendo for a long time and wanted to retire. i was just pointing out that it was sad that he left.

"The late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata"
"Then president of Nintendo America Reggie Fils-Aime"
Now I feel a little sad.

@Kev Walthall hey I think it was a joke
@Kev Walthall judging your reaction, I think you were part of a the Yakuza who kill him...
@Kev Walthall I ain't gonna argue with no little kid. Go to bed

"Uh no I didn't fall asleep during your presentation I was uh, silently voicing my approval. Yeah that's it."

Yamauchi: I'm sleep
Yamauchi in reality: Real shit!?
You thought that too huh?
Apparently in japanese work culture its a normal occurrence that the boss falls asleep in meetings if the topic is not of high importance/he trusts his employees.
I heard Iwata fell asleep during the Wii U's presentation.
Jude Law that’s prob why they both failed so badly. Mismanaged to hell
I'd say I'm here for LGR, but it's DYKG, so it's the perfect match!
this is basically an episode of Oddware.
Agreed
And I am thankful for it!
Do you Know Oddware
If he didn't say "Did you know...?" at the beginning of the video I would have sworn I woke up in the middle of an oddware episode
7:01 Poor Steve became Dr. Peli in the text. LOL!
I was just about to post the same thing, Eli Peli appeared twice in name.
It's a cool name though....
*Virtual Boy in the corner crying about its failures*
*Wii U shows up behind patting its back*
"It's ok man, I know how you feel..."
at least the Wii U had amazing games
*GameCube shows up*
It's not all bad.

@@TheKeitaNobodyAskedFor Are implying that the Virtual Boy's flagship title "Golf" wasn't a classic?
according to fanboys Virtual Boy outsold Wii U, so you know that's true information!

Oh, wow. You guys used some of the footage from my videos. Well, thank you for the credit!

Oh god, I was not ready for that.
Ohhhh bonus LGR video this week!!!
The Virtual Boy may have failed, but you've got to appreciate Nintendo's dedication to making sure the system was as safe as possible.
LGR in DYKG? hell yeah.
Nice! So happy to finally see Clint from LGR!
He's in a couple of others too :)
I feel like this was originally going to be an LGR Tech Tale on his channel.
LGR and Virtual Reality.
Two things I thumbs up without thinking.
you would make a great banker
I immediately hit the thumbs up as well
Having those Wario Land and Teleroboxer games trapped in the Virtual Boy is a crime.
The black and white emulation is nice honestly most of the games on the console were pretty good (especially if you use the black and white display)
*Virtual boy fails*
A few years later
*Nintendo Switch comes out*
Nintendo: Let's do vr
Shigeru Miyamoto: Ah shit, here we go again
I've heard the Wario game on that thing is actually really good, a shame they never remade it in full color for a later handheld.
Cough3DScough!
It actually is!! I used to play it as a kid and then as a teen and it was awesome!! I hope they remake it
Wait this ain't April fools, this is dyk virtual boy. The video I never thought would get made

0:20 "Allen Becker" sounds a lot like "Alan Becker". Just imagine a not-even-born baby working away animating small things on a tiny red display.
I had a friend who had a Virtual Boy back in the day. I remember TeleroBoxer being pretty fun to play.

I remember the AVGN's review of the Virtual Boy. Classic episode.
Awwww yeah
"Water world... on VIRTUAL BOY! It's like puking on a pile of shit!"
He gave it a really bad shake, whereas here the script is informative, fair, and even-handed
LGR should become the standard narrator for this channel, this was sooo much better than usual!
Virtual Boy: "I'm limited by the technology of my time"
Did you know that in Nintendo Labo's Discover mode, there are 3 characters Prof. Riggs, Plaise Allatyme, and Lerna Lotte, who each have their own personality and backstories that can be revealed if the player chooses certain dialog choices to have the characters go off on a tangent? Watching this while playing Luigi's Mansion 3, guess they're still putting that virtual boy in games as neat little things.

Compatible with Labo VR of course.

The Nintendo Life RUclips channel actually released some side-by-side video of Wario Land, which can be viewed in 3D using the 3DS internet browser

I wouldn't be surprised if there are any prototype PAL Virtual Boy consoles out in the wild. (5:53)
Shouldve used green, the human eye sees more shades of green more than any other color; plus its a cross of cool and warm colors, like violet.
Green LEDs were more expensive than red at the time, if memory serves.
