Some old cars used to have a rack at the back which literally had a trunk in it for storage, hence the American name for it now. However, some stagecoaches had a leather covered rear storage area called a "boot" because it was leather, which is why the rear container on a car is called a boot in Britain.
A boot locker was a separate item of luggage on a carriage for carrying boots. In Britain it was shortened over time to boot (not because they were made from leather) while USA stuck with trunk as their version of a travel chest.

The best thing about Clarkson is that he makes fun of other people and other countries, but doesn't get upset and sees the funny side when people do the same to him and his country. I can think of a few high-profile people who love dishing out on others, but have a massive meltdown if anyone does it to them.
