I have always hated the term “fake” when describing wrestling. Yes, of course I am aware that it is scripted for entertainment but there is no way you could fake whipping somebody with a belt like this. Props to Cody, and really every wrestler out there for sacrificing their bodies for our entertainment!
Just like Ric Flair lived his character during his entire career...I hated (but also respected) him from the time I started watching wrestling in 1975 until his face turn during the twilight of Nitro...after that, like many others, put him on a pedestal during his final run in the WWE (we will not speak of TNA...except for the run with Jay Lethal which was equally funny but also sad in parts)...
What a segment that was. They knocked it out of the park. So many of us weren't sure about this 10 lashes thing, and then they go and deliver one of the most emotional wrestling segments in years.
That’s great storytelling. Cody had said his friends and even his wife abandon him. When he needed them the most they appear and then his wife comes to him that’s a passion play and that makes MJF a no good SOB heel. Cody is the hero everyone can get behind that’s classic wrestling storytelling.
I met Cody the nicest person you will ever meet he did a charity show in Newport Tennessee and I got hit with cross Rhodes it was one of the best times of my life I was working security and he was heel at the moment we he did (before aew)
Love the little details of the heels watching on stage and enjoying, while the babyfaces are there to support Cody though they can't hit MJF. This was absolute TV gold

That heel turn was also the same night that he got drenched in water/beer from a fan. and this lashing wasn't long after that happened. But yeah, odds are better it was a shoot rather than a work.

I think the thing that was great about this is the fact that Cody is actively crying. Not just being emotional, not covering up his face to act like it, he is actively feeling the pain and not trying to put on a tough face. He's being human and thats whats great about this.

Don’t understand how people shit on AEW, this is what the industry’s been missing emotion and character investment. When Omega the Bucks and other storylines fall into place the products gonna be on an even higher level above the rest
Because they have gimmicks like the Butcher and The Blade and goof balls like Kenny Omega that makes stupid faces and dress up as anime characters. The only big guy they have dresses like a dinosaur and always has 2 midgets that look like high schoolers with him. Outside of MJF, Cody, Jericho, and Page they have nothing. Moxley can’t cut a promo, Hager has yet to have a match and all he does is fix his hair. Guevara has a lot of potential but he’s been underutilized, and the Young Bucks are nothing but high spot artists. It’s not necessarily that people hate the company it’s just that AEW marks think they’re going to revolutionize the business and their weekly show is mediocre at the absolute best. The only people that look forward to it on a weekly basis are people who’s lives revolve around wrestling and video games, and catering to that kind of audience isn’t what got professional wrestling to the level it got to in the mid to late 80s and late 90s. It’s about being able to keep your hardcore fans bought in while being able to get casual fans to want to tune in, and they’re never going to be able to do that with the product they currently have
No it won’t, 5 years from now when AEW is off cable television no one but marks will ever speak a word of this again. Shawn Michaels throwing Marty through the barber shop window, Scott Hall showing up on Nitro, Hogan turning heel and forming the NWO, Hogan slamming Andre, Steamboat beating Flair, Austin nose to nose with Tyson, Austin with the beer truck, Austin on the zambonie, Shawn Michaels winning the world championship in 2002, Rock vs Hogan, Foley going through the cell, Edge spearing Jeff Hardy off the ladder, and Edge returning at the Rumble are legendary moments. This is just a half assed copy of Sandman and Dreamer that no one outside of AEW marks will care about 5 years from now

I think the thing that was great about this is the fact that Cody is actively crying. Not just being emotional, not covering up his face to act like it, he is actively feeling the pain and not trying to put on a tough face. He's being human and thats whats great about this.

Some people might not like MJF, but I actually like the dude. The heel role really suits him very well. The arrogance of his character is flawless to make him one of the best heels. Because they have gimmicks like the Butcher and The Blade and goof balls like Kenny Omega that makes stupid faces and dress up as anime characters. The only big guy they have dresses like a dinosaur and always has 2 midgets that look like high schoolers with him. Outside of MJF, Cody, Jericho, and Page they have nothing. Moxley can’t cut a promo, Hager has yet to have a match and all he does is fix his hair. Guevara has a lot of potential but he’s been underutilized, and the Young Bucks are nothing but high spot artists. It’s not necessarily that people hate the company it’s just that AEW marks think they’re going to revolutionize the business and their weekly show is mediocre at the absolute best. The only people that look forward to it on a weekly basis are people who’s lives revolve around wrestling and video games, and catering to that kind of audience isn’t what got professional wrestling to the level it got to in the mid to late 80s and late 90s. It’s about being able to keep your hardcore fans bought in while being able to get casual fans to want to tune in, and they’re never going to be able to do that with the product they currently have

Shawn Michaels throwing Marty through the barber shop window, Scott Hall showing up on Nitro, Hogan turning heel and forming the NWO, Hogan slamming Andre, Steamboat beating Flair, Austin nose to nose with Tyson, Austin with the beer truck, Austin on the zambonie, Shawn Michaels winning the world championship in 2002, Rock vs Hogan, Foley going through the cell, Edge spearing Jeff Hardy off the ladder, and Edge returning at the Rumble are legendary moments. This is just a half assed copy of Sandman and Dreamer that no one outside of AEW marks will care about 5 years from now
