On the cottage cheese one, did you hear me hollering “that might be better with pineapple!” My husband heard me and poked his head in the room and gave me a look. And then I’ll be darned if Anna doesn’t have pineapple for the last recipe, so I hollered, “try it on the cottage cheese dog” and then my husband came in the room, picked up my iced tea and sniffed it. So rude. 😃
Sorry, imo NOTHING can make cottage cheese taste good. It's like coffee...there isn't enough sweetener and creamer in the world to make that taste good!
Grew up eating these in the 60s as a kid and my brother and I loved them. We called them Whistle Pigs. When I was around 18, I moved and the bowling alley there called them Dog Burgers. Never understood why. 🤷🏼♀️ I made them for my husband and daughter every so often while she was growing up, and she loved them, too. A few years ago I had a craving and made some again and now I eat them probably once a month! I decided life was too short and I should eat them if I enjoy them. I eat keto, though, so no bun and either sliced cheddar or Kraft Deli Deluxe American Slices (the only American cheese with pretty clean ingredients for American cheese and lots of carbs - 1 oz of cheddar has 0 carbs, Kraft Deluxe American has 1.5 carbs for 1.5 slices which is 1 oz, and Velveeta has 3 carbs for 1 oz). Every so often I throw caution to the wind and have it on half a toasted bun! 😂
Back in the 60s I was in high school. I wanted to learn to cook, so I made dinner on Saturday nights. My main recipe source was Calling All Girls magazine. It was a small little thing, but always had a few pages of recipes. I made so many dinners with hot dogs, my Dad would not eat them after I moved out! My Mom told me that a few years ago.
Or was it the big weiner?😏The hot dog mixture itself looked *really* good, the bun just wasn't the best vehicle. Maybe "Cheesy Weiner Nachos" but the "nacho chips" are pita chips.
My mom used to take a hot dog, slice it down the length, but not all the way through. She'd stuff it with leftover mashed potatoes (instant could also be used) then topped with a slice of cheese cut up to go over the potatoes. She'd then warm through in the oven and broil for a minute at the end for the cheese. We never ate it on a bun, but with the potatoes it's very filling.
One of my best memories is spending Canada Day and 7/4 in the French River area of Ontario in 1967. That was a popular vacation spot for Clevelanders in the 50’s and 60’s. Oh to be 17 again (or not)!
It's past midnight here in Sweden, and I'm eating sliced wiener sausages, and it is all your fault.😂 I'm going out tomorrow to buy some cottage cheese and hot dog buns. These recipes looked very good. My favourite hot dog topping is drained sour milk or yoghurt (or sour cream) finely sliced yellow onion, salt and white pepper, and maybe some garlic. I wrap the sausages in some sliced cheese, put them in the buns, and heat it up until the cheese melts. This way, it won't fall apart. Ketchup and mustard on top of the topping are a must.
I grew up on ' open faced grilled cheese sandwiches' grandma made them almost identical to this but skip mustard and pickles ,put on a slice of bread and broiled (no foil involved). I love them and still make them sometimes to this day.
After thinking for a minute or two, the pineapple/ketchup combo makes sense because that is almost like a tomato-based sweet and sour thing and hot dogs are pork - so essentially sweet and sour pork on a bun without the fried part. That's my take anyway. Happy 4th to those in the US. Happy Canada Day to the neighbors to the north.
I would cut up the hot dogs and sauté in butter, then mix with ketchup or BBQ and serve on top split buns. Almost reminds me of Hawai'i, just spam in place of the hot dog pieces.
Around the corner from where I work is what once was a gas station years and years ago turned into a hot dog restaurant called The Flying Wienie. It even has a small plane on the roof!
Have you considered doing a compilation video of the top 3 things that you’ve made and loved enough to incorporate into your meal rotation and the top 3 things you never want to even think about again?
In college, I used to man the grill at department get-togethers -- I enjoyed cooking and could stand the heat, while it allowed everybody else to socialize. The grill was one of those big things made from a 55-gallon drum. I'd baste the weenies over and over with (usually) KC Masterpiece so they'd develop a dark caramelized coating as I rotated them.
I’m a pretty traditional hot dog person. Mustard, ketchup and sweet relish. I do like sauerkraut and a spicy mustard sometimes. Thanks for your adventurous spirit in trying the cottage cheese and green onions!
Fun lol! I recently found a stack of little cookbooks from 1955-58, all different themes and the artwork inside is so adorable! There’s a bunch and only paid $1! They all say Culinary arts institute inside.
I use to work at A&W until we had to close the end of November 2022. We just couldn't recover from "the C word" because no one wanted to work. I use to make what I called a Papa Dog. It was our Hot dog topped with the Papa Burger toppings..Papa sauce, lettuce, onions, pickles, tomatoes and cheese. It was so good! I also use to top my cheese dog with crumbled bacon and fried onions.
My favorite way to make hotdogs is actually a casserole recipe given to me by a friend. Baked beans in 9x9, split hot dogs on top, cover with prepared stove-top stuffing then baked. Sometimes I add cheese between the dogs and the stuffing. Really very good. No buns needed. Hope you're getting stronger every day!
I'm from NC where most people like their hotdogs "all the way". Meaning Mustard, Onion, Slaw, and Chili. Very good, but I add ketchup, too! Great video, Anna!
I lived in Pittsburgh when Rick Sebak was doing local documentaries and the PBS station was doing themed cooking shows. I made certain to watch them when they aired. I miss that part of my years in the area. Great city.
Loved most of his shows. Cooking aside I liked his cemetery series. I think there were two episodes. As for cooking I liked Chris Fennimore (not sure of spelling). My mom and I made a lot of things from those shows.
I'm pretty adventurous when it comes to food so I would try every single one of these hot dogs. OMG, the Hot Dog Documentary! I used to watch that doc on PBS multiple times in the '90s and actually, I've re-watched it on YT a few times. Visited The Varsity in Atlanta because of it. I was in Chicago last year but missed out on Superdawgs and I remember that giant $0.99 hot dog from Slots-of-Fun. I'm told they've discontinued it. The fact that I can recite these hot dog joints shows what a niche fan I am of that Hot Dog Doc! So happy you love it too!
I know that documentary, I have a copy of that - it’s very good. They even cut briefly to a hot dog at a restaurant they don’t have time to visit : *Oki-Dog on Fairfax Ave. in Los Angeles. It is not on a bun, and is actually a huge burrito wrapper with TWO hot dogs, artfully folded with melted American cheese, a mound of fried pastrami, and a blob of spicy beef chili.* The whole burrito is greasy and full of salt and calories, beginning with the TWO weiners, and then adding more madness from there. The Oki-Dog was a punk rocker’s and skateboarder’s favorite food, stretching back historically to the 1970s, when the restaurant was originally located on Santa Monica Blvd in Hollywood! 😀💜
Like the idea of the Cheesy Wiener Buns. You are right maybe as a dip. Or as you said toast the bun first. Not sure about that pineapple one. I like mustard and sweet relish, so maybe instead of ketchup add mustard. Unless we were having a BBQ Day my mom would not buy buns. I've always had hotdogs in bread, folded corner to corner.
I just realised that the only reason my mom bought buns was to make the hot ham and cheese Anna was talking about! We had buns for cookouts and that was it. 😂
When we were kids, Dad used to grill hot dogs on a rickety little BBQ, then slice them lengthwise and make a sandwich on sliced bread. We thought that was gourmet!
The cottage cheese? Ugh!! 😊 When I was a kid, saturday night supper was hot dogs and beans. My dad did the cooking that day and would fry up onions and peppers in butter and then add the dogs. 😊
I was born in Chicago, and there’s something I need to get off my chest: if you like ketchup on your hot dog, put ketchup on your hot dog. There. I’ve said it.
I’m pretty sure my mom had that cookbook back in the day! It looks so familiar. I was the kid who read all the cookbooks front to back, over and over 😂 I’m not aware of ever eating any of the recipes in this book. But my mom’s signature hot dog dishes back then were pigs in a blanket (with crescent rolls and American cheese) and kraft Mac and cheese with chopped hot dogs mixed in.
Oh, my goodness! I am also a big fan of Rick Seaback! I recommend his documentary, "Great Old Amusement Parks.". I am in Cincinnati, and I find his work extremely nostalgic. (I also remember Portrillos.) I started watching your channel a while ago because I have the same hobby: cooking vintage recipes. I've found over time that due to our proximity, we have very similar backgrounds in that particular Midwestern/Ohioan way, so your videos carry a lot of nostalgia for me and I relate to your opinions on a molecular level, haha. As a vegetarian, I am so grateful to see your attention to non-meat meals or substitutions, but I watch you regardless, and often rewatch your videos at night to fall asleep, as your accent and intonation make me feel like being in a room with an old friend. You're the best, Anna, and I thank you for your work. Love from Cincy!
I like to cut my hot dog length wise almost all the way through, lay it out, fry it in my cast iron skillet, then put it in a hot dog bun that I brushed butter on and toasted slightly in oven. Add toppings of what you happen to have that day. AMAZING!
When you mentioned the PBS special, I thought -I think Gary was in that one. Super-Duper Weenie (or Weenie Man to our family) is a local specialty. And Gary was able to open his land based Super-Duper Weenie. Not quite a diner but more than hot dogs. Burgers are great and so are the chicken nuggets. I left CT for NC, but a visit home often includes a stop.
I owned that cookbook, loved those seasonal small paperback cookbooks at the checkout line! I hope your recovery is on schedule and can get back to what you love soon❤
I can’t stop saying “cheesey wiener buns” Speaking of Ohio dogs, a close friend of mine is from Ohio and he’s a huge fan of Tony Paco’s. Like Klinger! This show sealed it for me, getting some dogs for the 4th! Thank you, Anna! I hope you’re well and hope you’re being kind to yourself! 🙂✨
My mom split the hot dogs, filled them with a slice of cheese and wrapped them in bacon and baked them. I use the half cooked bacon, so it gets crisper. Kind of off topic but if you love pineapple, you should try southern pineapple casserole. I found the recipe in an old church cookbook, but its also on the internet. Great video, thanks!👍
Sloppy Dogs! One time a few years ago, when I had made Sloppy Joes for dinner, my husband got the idea to try some on a hot dog. Now it's the only way he'll eat a hot dog.
Mom used to slice and fry hotdogs, then mix with grated cheddar, ketchup and mustard. Served with kraft dinner. Sounds weird but it was delicious. Ah, the 70s.
In the 80s I used to slice all beef hot dogs part way through and stuff them with American cheese slices. Then I wrapped each one in a canned crescent roll triangle and cook in the oven until browned. Gooey cheesy deliciousness!
We have been eating hot dogs a couple times a week this summer. It's been cheap and they cook fast. I like just mustard. Thanks for the dip idea! I had a friend from the Louisville area who used hot dogs as an ingredient. It was so weird to me. She put them in lasagna, rice, as a potato hash. Uck. My mom used to make me cottage cheese and canned pears with shredded sharp cheddar cheese. It sounds weird, but it's a great summertime treat. We keep canned fruit in the fridge for stuff like this. Cold and sweet and the cheese adds texture and a sharpness - I have added slivered almonds when I wanna feel fancy. She also loves a hamburger patty, lettuce salad, and cottage cheese. I add lots of pepper and an avocado, too. I love to grill extra burgers to freeze for this super quick lunch.
Favorite dog is what I call a "salad dog". I blacken the weenie in the toaster oven, top it very generously with mustard, and then garnish with lettuce, tomato, chopped onion, and lots of dill pickle slices (or dill pickle relish). Trader Joe's used to sell a bowl of 8 or 9 vegetables, all chopped up -- if I had some of that around, I'd pile that on the dog as well. I always liked going to Harvey's (Canada) because they'd put as much salad as I wanted on my dog. They just didn't custom roast the dog until it was blistered and barking. (P.S. I have a Pillsbury booklet that looks like today's featured cookbook, also from the 1980s, but it's full of COOKIE recipes.)
Honestly, I'd put the cheesy weiner bun mixture in either uncooked biscuits (create a pocket, put it in) and bake it, or make a casserole with mashed potatoes on the bottom and the mixture on top. I'm definitely going to try the mix both ways, *and* as a dip.
You know.... I'm like you with that cheesy hot dog bake in the bun thingy. It seems like an interesting mixture but.... I think that I would quick simmer all the ingredients in a skillet and then serve it on the bun and call it a "Sloppy Dog". Fun video.
Very interesting recipes. I don’t know why, but the one with the cottage cheese looks intriguing to me. I also would try the pineapple one, but I would maybe substitute barbecue sauce for the ketchup. As a Pittsburgher, it was nice to hear a shout out to Rick Sebak. He is truly a local treasure.
I noticed that food network has a pineapple relish recipe that they show with a hotdog, so perhaps this recipe was the humble beginning of that? It actually sounds pretty yummy and along with hotdog, it would probably be good on cottage cheese! Worlds could collide.
I remember watching all 3 of those documentaries and enjoying them! I think PBS reran them a couple of times in the ‘00s-10s. My favorite way to eat a hot dog is with chili, mustard, onions, and coleslaw!
Try mixing the green onions into the cottage cheese with a tiny pinch of salt and a dash of pepper on top... Mmmm so good!! Thank you for the other ideas..
Also here in Seattle they serve hotdogs with cream cheese and caramelized onions and it’s pretty tasty. Back home in WV, the hot dog is often served with a meaty chili with no beans and coleslaw on top but I often add dill relish and ketchup and mustard.
Growing up we had hot dogs wrapped in American cheese and placed diagonally on a piece of white bread and folded to bring the corners together on the bread. The corners were held together with a toothpick and the whole thing was baked toasty. They were an 80’s kid treat. You could make it “fancy” by wrapping the dog also with a little piece of bacon before wrapping up in the bread. I liked the ideas you made. I think I’d made the pineapple dog first, then maybe the cheesy dog bun. Maybe it was meant to come out like a toasted tuna sandwich?
My favorite of all time is coneys. It's a Detroit thing. Recently, we discovered cooking them in the air fryer and they are so good. Reminds me of grilled minus the heat.
My mom made this thing called ham boats. It "diced?" chipped ham mayo cubed sharp american cheese and scalloped diced. You put that in a hot dog bun put it in a foil sleeping bag and put them it at 350 10-15 min. A side of ice cold cottage cheese with salt and pepper maybe a few potato chips or some cucumber slices on the side. I haven't thought I've these in forever! Now I kinda need them. Not a hot dog but close enough I'm sure you could use hotdogs
@@LynnLeclerc scallions! Lol and the chipped ham is cut into smaller bits I don't know what word I need to that. They're so melty good though. I tried! 💖
I like baked beans on my hot dog. Sometimes I like sauerkraut or just ketchup with mustard and sweet relish. Just depends what mood I’m in. Chili and cheese is a good one too!
My Mom would slice a hot dog and put cheese in the slot. Then she'd wrap it with bacon secured with toothpicks. She would bake it. The problem was all the cheese would melt out before the bacon was done. It still tasted good.
Wow I remember that cook book when it came out . Love your channel & hope you are healing & feeling better. Made my daughter a new person. BIG HUGS, Anita3kids in NJ
The cottage. Cheese dog should be called a cottage dog. However I would add some kind of spices to the cottage cheese like maybe onion and garlic powder and maybe some pepper I think that would really elevate it and make it taste real good.
Mom would put mayonnaise, lettuce & sweet pickle relish on her hotdog. She’d occasionally add a little celery salt too. I like beanless chili, onion, a few chopped tomatoes & cheese. Or dill pickles, onion, ketchup & mustard.
Ketchup is an ingredient in sweet and sour sauce … and what’s the best part about sweet and sour chicken? The pineapple chunks, of course. It makes sense :) our current hot dog fave is the Costco 3 pack, we wrap them in the pillsbury corn dog wraps and bake them 😋 (gotta love that tube bread)
5:44 Have you made the baked ham and cheese sandwiches before on your channel? I think my son would love those. I would love to see a video where you made some of your favorite childhood recipes! (If you haven’t already, I’m still working my way through the oldest ones!)

And then I’ll be darned if Anna doesn’t have pineapple for the last recipe, so I hollered, “try it on the cottage cheese dog” and then my husband came in the room, picked up my iced tea and sniffed it. I thought the same thing! We always put applesauce on cottage cheese. That might also work.

Sandwiches You Will Like is a classic!
I like to cut my hot dog length wise almost all the way through, lay it out, fry it in my cast iron skillet, then put it in a hot dog bun that I brushed butter on and toasted slightly in oven. Add toppings of what you happen to have that day. AMAZING!
Hi Anna,
How are you feeling?
Thank you for your videos.
You're such a delight to watch.😊
I'm feeling a little better every day. Thank you! ❤
I can’t stop saying “cheesey wiener buns”
Speaking of Ohio dogs, a close friend of mine is from Ohio and he’s a huge fan of Tony Paco’s. Like Klinger!
This show sealed it for me, getting some dogs for the 4th!
Thank you, Anna! I hope you’re well and hope you’re being kind to yourself! 🙂✨
Oh yes! Toledo is the closest city to my hometown. Tony Packo's is very popular! 😊
Dodgers dogs at the stadium are the best! Fun hot dog recipes! Thanks
Absolutely loved the little “hot dog discussion” at the end. 😂❤️
Sloppy Dogs! One time a few years ago, when I had made Sloppy Joes for dinner, my husband got the idea to try some on a hot dog. Now it's the only way he'll eat a hot dog.
Maybe use the top split buns for the baked Cheesy weiner bun sandwich. They don't fall open as wide as regular side split buns.
I loved these growing up!
I still make these as a guilty pleasure meal, especially if I am recovering from a surgical procedure.
Hope you are doing well, and healing fast.
Being a child of the 1960s, all these sound delicious to me! But I would have had to make the hot dog and cottage cheese in secret.😆
I love it when you go '80s!!!! My favorite food decade📼☎🛼🎥💗
More 1980s recipes coming soon! 😄
@@cooking_the_books YASSSSS!
I noticed that food network has a pineapple relish recipe that they show with a hotdog, so perhaps this recipe was the humble beginning of that? It actually sounds pretty yummy and along with hotdog, it would probably be good on cottage cheese! Worlds could collide.
welcome everyone to the best youtube channel in the world! hot dog edition.
A place near my college did weird hot dogs and my favorite was potato salad on top.
Omg your cookbook book shelf is amazing. I just deep cleaned and organized my cookbook shelves and I have no where near as many as you. Dang!! Love it
I remember watching all 3 of those documentaries and enjoying them! I think PBS reran them a couple of times in the ‘00s-10s. My favorite way to eat a hot dog is with chili, mustard, onions, and coleslaw!
I used to like cottage cheese with herbs. Chives, parsley, oregano, whatever fresh herbs you like, salt & pepper to taste. Dee-lish!!
Try mixing the green onions into the cottage cheese with a tiny pinch of salt and a dash of pepper on top... Mmmm so good!! Thank you for the other ideas..
Whomever woke up one morning and thought.."lets put cottage cheese & ketchup w/pineapple on the hot dog" needs to go back to bed 😂
The foil wrapped sandwiches might be good for camping
PS. Here where I live the famous hot dog locally is the Michigan dog. We all have our own different secret recipes for it.
Also here in Seattle they serve hotdogs with cream cheese and caramelized onions and it’s pretty tasty. Back home in WV, the hot dog is often served with a meaty chili with no beans and coleslaw on top but I often add dill relish and ketchup and mustard.
Bbq sauce instead of ketchup with pineapple...hot dog salad...like ham salad, but hot? Make it a dip 😂❤
I say yes to hot dog dip with Fritos!! 😊
Great idea!
This is very adventurous
Coleslaw, tomatoes, strips of bell pepper, pickle spears dill or garlic flavor are some ways I like to eat on them
My mom made this thing called ham boats.
Scalloped diced (?) what?
@@LynnLeclerc scallions! Lol and the chipped ham is cut into smaller bits I don't know what word I need to that. They're so melty good though. I tried! 💖
Autocorrect fails me once again...
That sounds so good! I'm taking a screenshot so that I won't forget it.😋
@@karinberonius8799 so good the buns end up just a little crunchy
I like baked beans on my hot dog. Sometimes I like sauerkraut or just ketchup with mustard and sweet relish. Just depends what mood I’m in. Chili and cheese is a good one too!
My Mom would slice a hot dog and put cheese in the slot. Then she'd wrap it with bacon secured with toothpicks. She would bake it. The problem was all the cheese would melt out before the bacon was done. It still tasted good.
Hope you are feeling a little better day by day.
Pineapple is a topping at happy dog. my partner always eats pineapples on their burgers but i never actually personally tried them on a hotdog
The pineapple and ketchup would be like sweet and sour. I agree it needs green onion.
The dip idea sounds good.
My favorite way to eat a hot dog is a cheese coney from Skyline :) We are serious about our Cincinnati chili down here.
Mom would put mayonnaise, lettuce & sweet pickle relish on her hotdog. She’d occasionally add a little celery salt too.
I like beanless chili, onion, a few chopped tomatoes & cheese.
Or dill pickles, onion, ketchup & mustard.
Just love all the ideas and nostalgia! Thank you Anna...what a super comment community you have created!
Darn you! Now I want a HOTDOG!!! Great video!
Well I hope you got to have one! 😊
5:44 Have you made the baked ham and cheese sandwiches before on your channel? I think my son would love those. I would love to see a video where you made some of your favorite childhood recipes! (If you haven’t already, I’m still working my way through the oldest ones!)
Oo yes!🎉
I haven't yet but plan to! 😊
