LC this entire album is about them not giving up easily and also farewell to Soojin 😢😢😢😢. Escape was written by Minnie for Soojin. Minnie said in interview that she wrote escape to one of her closet friend who was having a very very hard time in 2021 😢😢😢😢. Escape is the first kpop song that made me cry 😭😭😭
About the wordplay and meaning of the MY BAG lyrics:
- As you noticed, Minnie's rap includes a reference to her iconic "uh oh" from Latata where people first fell in love with her ethereal vocals. It also makes a point to mention how she's "not been interested in money since she was born" because she was born into an extremely wealthy (like, high society, ties-to-royalty kind of wealthy) family in Thailand.
- Yuqi's rap has the most depth in terms of meaning, IMO. It highlights her deep, powerful voice by saying it wins against a drum, and makes a reference to the Transformers character Bumblebee - who Yuqi has declared her boyfriend - and her endless confidence and self-love ("I value my love"). The really deep one is her "I never had fear, aka Giant Dog" line, which on the surface is a simple reference to her soloist debut single "Giant", but: 1) Yuqi used to be called "Beijing Puppy" and so here she declares she's grown up, 2) "I never had fear", is more accurately translated to "I never had cowardice", and cowardice is the term for a pack of dogs... Yuqi never needed a pack to help her as she is the Giant Dog, a force to be reckoned with all on her own - bringing it back to her endless confidence and indomitable self-belief.
- Shuhua's rap features references to her often being associated with a wolf, her 4D personality/main character personality, how that leads to her seeming bossy (derogatory) to some and savage (affectionate) to others in how she acts around her members despite the fact she's the maknae of the group.
- Miyeon's rap hinges on one central theme/message: she is a princess. Everyone treats her as one - e.g. she is MCountdown's unofficial princess even after she quit being their MC - but while she may be unbelievably beautiful she is like a rose in that she still has thorns so she's not defenseless, and she doesn't have time to respond to everyone desperately seeking her attention.
- And these are all 4 of the 5 red diamonds in Soyeon's bag, and she is more than willing to show them off. Fun fact: diamonds are rare enough as is, but red diamonds are the rarest of them all.
I feel like I-dle will always be a group... Idk why.. it's like they are so organic together, and they create their music and concepts together in such a natural way. They know how to work together and take the best out of each other. I really feel like, even after contract ends, eventually, they'll find a way to keep making music together as a group. They just know that they are unstoppable together.
minnie also said in an interview that escape is dedicated to "a friend who was having a hard time in 2021" who we can assume is soojin.
For me, I never die is my second favorite album from them after I burn. being there and experiencing them coming back stronger than ever after the whole Soojin situation was definitely an experience like no other.
About some of the songs being about Soojin, Escape was the one that made me think of her IMMEDIATELY. I didn't cry back in 2021 when everything went down but when I first listened to this song it all just hit me like a train and I was just sitting there ugly crying it was so embarrassing 😭😂 but yeah for that reason Escape has a very special place in my heart. (also, Minnie said she wrote this song in 2021 for a friend that was going through a hard time so I think it's safe to assume it indeed is for Soojin 😢😢)
Soyeon's rap in liar is also my favorite top5 verses she's ever done. I think this translation is the best one so I'll leave it here

To your mom that called me a stupid and arrogant celebrity, make sure to tell her I didn't like her either. Don't talk about manners, mind your own business. I prefer people say it to my face rather than behind my back but you clearly don't have the guts for that. before you treat your next girlfriend like a baby with a "You can't" to everything, fix your grammar first it's can't with an apostrophe."
So yeah, I'd never show my face anywhere if I was Soyeon's ex 😂😂😂

some context: after coming back from a long hiatus and releasing this album they had their first offline world tour becoz they had done their first tour online in the pandemic but not an actual tour and that was what soojin always wanted since debut is to have a world tour so u can imagine how painful it felt to tour for the 1st time but without her. The hiatus was a year and 2 months long and they each had their solo activities at the time.. yuqi went to china for several shows and released a single with two songs called 'a page' so she overworked herself to numb the pain of everything not to mention that another chinese kpop idol friend of hers was also accused of some things a few months after soojin and yes that year was crazy for kpop.. miyeon also did some shows and sang osts and stuff..soyeon released a solo album.. shuhua promoted a bit in taiwan and minnie in thailand (their hometowns btw).. as someone who witnessed everything first hand.. they went through alot that year and came back with the banger album 'i never die' after everyone said they were forgotten and it's over for them and u can tell from their attitude..
I do think there is a lot of subtle messaging about Soojin in this album. I especially think that the slower songs from this half of the album are possibly also messages for Soojin.
My Bag is absolutely iconic, but Liar is still my fav

"Escape". So nice, though the album has so many great tracks, it's often hard to choose just one.

story behind polaroid, during soojin situation all of them working by themself. yuqi watched their early debut era video. She remember how happy she is during those time with full smile on their face so she crying watched it. Plus she miss the girls so much that time. that how the song came out
If there is such a term as multi-idol, then it is 100% Soyeon. I think it's emotionally the strongest Idol album, and also the beginning of Shuhua's era with more parts (not three words🙂) in songs❤

Stop relating every idle song with Soojin, Yuqi said she write Polaroid because one day a staff show her a photo of her smile in the their debut era , and she tried to smile like the photo again and realized that those were very good times and she missed that smile because after many years she can’t be like before
