    What do think Hayter’s issue is with positioning, is it just inexperience or has he got a similar aversion to being in the thick of it like Adam Yates? He’s clearly super strong, that way he beasted up that cobbled climb was bob on. Wonder what he’d be like at Strada Bianchi

    • @LanterneRougeCycling

      There does seem to be issues with him positioning in bunch sprints, the stage Greipel won in this race on stage 4 he also was nowhere close. Pidcock might have less absolute watts but actually seems to be better at mixing it up in smaller group sprints

    I think Paris-Nice could be a great source of experience for Hayter, but winning it with a Roglič (presumably) hungry for redemption after last year's disaster, would be a very tall order.

    Think Hayter should stick to the one days because he's way more likely to get leadership than in WT stage races at Ineos. Should aim to win races like KBK or Dwars Door Vlaanderen. Tour de Pologne would be a good call if he wants to try GC after the classics.

    • @swissbiggy
      @swissbiggy 2 года назад +1

      I agree on that. Hayter had a great season last year, but let's keep in the back of our minds that this was mainly in races that are not of the highest level.
      Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali = 4th with Vingegaard as winner.
      Volta ao Algarve em Bicicleta = 2nd with Rodrigues as winner.
      Vuelta a Andalucia Ruta Ciclista Del Sol = 7th with Angel Lopez as winner.
      Tour of Norway = 1st
      Tour of Britain = 2nd with Van Aert as winner.
      All very good results for a kid of his age (he's 23 if I'm correct ?). And he did very well in a few of the on day races : 11th in Dwars door Vlaanderen and Gran Piemonte, and 4th in the Bretagne Classic. Count up several stage wins and his win in the national TT championship, 8th in the World Championship TT.
      So I do agree 200% that he should not overdo it. Take it step by step indeed, he could win Pologne or the Benelux Tour maybe with his abilities as time trialer and puncher. And do well in a few of the one day races. Let's not forget that Ineos has alot of big names in the team, so his role will mainly be the one as domestic this upcoming season. (And there is nothing wrong with that of course.) ✌

    I'm not that bothered about Hayter, he'll do well, an exciting rider and can't wait to see how he goes this season, but what I'm more concerned about is why the organisers had Antwan Tolhoek down as a Georgian when I had him down as Dutch.

      @@kraknoix0075 it is, but for cycling events, they use GBR instead, for Great Britain, unless it's the Commonwealth Games. The Georgian flag is the same as England except it has four more smaller St George's Crosses in the white spaces. In a small circle, they may be cut off. Either, the fella's Dutch, so it's still an odd one.

    He overlaps a lot with Tom Pid. How do you manage that? I guess TP will concentrate a lot on cross this year? But both of them in a one day race would be interesting. The team tactics and options would give INEOS a great chance, you would think.

    I am extremely bullish on Ethan Hayter. I think he will be one of the most exciting riders to watch in 2022. He can get up punchy hills, he can TT, and he can hold his own in a bunch sprint at the end of a hard day. Almost like a WvA Lite. I could see him excelling in the punchy classics, but it would also be interesting to see if he can transition to a one-week stage racer. Personally, I would rather see him focus on one-day races.

    Maybe building Ethan Hayter up via sending him to one week stage races and Ardenne-Classics could be a good option for his future development. The jump from being relatively unknown to being an important domestic or even a contender for GC in a Grand Tour might be a little big to tough in one year. Having some stepping stones and taking time to appropriate the physical tools, the experience and mental resources before entering the biggest stages in cycling expects much more margin for success than entering these races prematurely. Ineos as a team being in a period of transition and rebuild might support this idea.

  • @george474747
    @george474747 2 года назад +1

    I love this channel, but can I put forward an argument for some constructive criticism?
    Pronouncing names in different accents according to what language those names are derived from messes with the syllabic stress, phonetic and tonal aspects that make speech fluent and give it its poetic qualities.
    Tokyo is not pronounced 「とうきょう」('toukyou') with falling intonation when speaking English - it's pronounced Tokiyo - primarily because English is not a tonal language. Brits should not pronounce tomato as 'tomaydou' if that particular tomato was born in the USA. It would sound incoherent and ugly.
    Recent concerns over name pronunciation often seem to me be driven by anxiety about illegitimate claims over ownership of others' accents when pronouncing "our" name... Not pronouncing a Spanish z as 'th' or not rolling a Russian r is as natural when speaking English as omitting tones from Chinese names, or click sounds from Khoisan names.
    My point is, speech is attractive to the listener and feels authentic from the speaker when it obeys the subtle, complex architecture of the language it's being delivered in and heard through. Those who wish speakers to change languages every time they pronounce a name should try listening to how contrived and soulless that expression sounds in their own language.

    • @sldulin
      @sldulin 2 года назад +1

      Interesting observation. I'm not knowledgeable enough to agree or disagree but interesting none the less.

    • @anomalousresult
      @anomalousresult 2 года назад +1

      I feel like the difference is obvious, Tokyo is an English language name, like Paris or Moscow. Individuals only have one name, so attempts should be made to pronounce their names as they do, it's that simple.

    • @george474747
      @george474747 2 года назад

      Pronouncing as accurately as possible using the phonemes that exist in your own language makes sense, but to employ sounds that don't exist in the speaker's or listener's language is clearly wrong...
      ...Expecting the speaker to pronounce and the listener to identify the moving pitch of the 5 tones used for a Chinese name in English, for example, is clearly ludicrous. European listeners are conditioned to identifying stresses, not tones, and similar linguistic distinctions apply (more subtlely) to differing Indo-European family languages.
      As I argued, I would also go further than that for aesthetic reasons. But at a minimum, narrators should never employ sound combinations that don't exist in either their accent or the language employed for the listener.

    • @george474747
      @george474747 2 года назад +1

      Basically, I'm not saying Thierry Henry should be pronounced Terry Henry; I'm saying pronounce the "rr" as an English r (not the 'th' non-existent in that section of any word in English), but pronounce the "He" as an e, because that doesn't clash with the speaker's overall pattern of sounds like an off-key musical note.
      Never imitate an accent to pronounce someone's name, any more than you'd put on a New York accent to say a New Yorker's name.
      If you pronounced every word in the language its etymology tells you it was derived from, your speech would be an ugly, semi-comprehensible mess of no discernible language.
      Accent is real. Don't be fake.

      Agreed...Belgian "kasseien" are bricks, often with edges and gaps between them, while these were smooth, what we used to call "babyheads" while found mountain biking....but, imagine a finale like the Mur de Huy on a similar surface. That climb, just like any other, would be made that much more difficult without a smooth surface. Between them, I'd guess the Sol finish was harder (compared to a "babyheaded" Huy). What do you think? LR probably has the stats for that..

    • @WeallAreAdults
      @WeallAreAdults 2 года назад

      @@whatsitwhosit I think if it were belgian brick roads the tempo would have slowed down and he would probably be in a disadvantage instead of here where he could zoom over them.
      Ngl I can't ride like these guys, so it would be difficult nonetheless even tho i ride belgian bricks everyday, doing it uphill is another ballgame, but these bricks looked easy even for me, and i do about 5 km out of 40km on daily commuting 5-7/7 days a week, which are rough belgian bricks that will fuck your tyres up real bad if you don't know the pattern to ride them on.
      The belgian bricks with gaps inbetween will easily stop any rider going over them unless they have rode it x amount of times to know what works for them, on bricks like these you can cheese your way over them and not worry so much about losing control
      i've no clue what : I'd guess the Sol finish was harder (compared to a "babyheaded" Huy). What do you think? LR probably has the stats for that..
      Means but i'm not following cycling all that much, i just do me and if i look at cyclin its usually tour de france, for me cycling doesn't need to be watched i rather just hop on my bike instead of looking at it.
