"$100" doesn't literally mean $100. It's whatever level a purchase starts feeling expensive. For some that number is lower - even much lower - for some, that number is higher. The principles are useful no matter what price point is meaningful to you.

A word or two of advice Renting Furniture from company's such as Rent A Center is not a good Idea because they use predatory financing and prey on those who do not have a good credit history, as well as those who do not have a lot of money or are on Public Assistance. The monthly payments are subject to interest charges so you wind up paying more than the price listed on the item.

      4) Well, not one that is still working... The old one broke down last week.

      7) nope, my friends are getting tired of e-mailing me ;-)
      8) maybe... If I give it away someone might buy food or medicine or something... But of the money spent on me this is definitely among the more useful types of purchase
      9) Yes, I really do...
      10) Big tech, Google, Samsung (or similar)... That sucks...
      11) My life has started to revolve around it so much that I think it would be hard to go back. And I would definitely not mind working two full days (the phone will be more than $100...) on it. So yes, I guess so.

What infuriates me is that I have a perfectly fine flatscreen Sony 46" TV that I bought in 2010, along with a BluRay DVD player. BUT, a few years back, RUclips said my TV was obsolete and I can't stream its content on it. And, at the end of next month, Amazon Prime Video has said the same thing about my BluRay. Luckily, I have a new computer (because they DO get old and worn out), and now I have my old one hooked up to my TV to watch all that: Recycling at its finest!

Omg!! My partner and I bought a big second hand Soniq tv for $100 which has been great and has now lasted us almost 5 years. It doesn’t connect to the internet or anything but I have a well-used laptop for that, which has the added benefit of being a separate computer.
My partner recently did calculations of how much electricity we would save if we bought a new $1000 tv and I was like “..... or we could just .. not watch so much tv and save all that power without the $1k price tag ?”
Honestly the whole “smart tv” trend is so soul-sucking. It’s like capitalism is actively selling you subscriptions to convince you to waste more of your time, and then selling you tv’s so you can waste your time more conveniently. And then selling you gym memberships and fad diets so you can pretend to counteract the unhealthy habits you’re cultivating by watching tv all the time.

I just spent hundreds of dollars on a dresser but ran through whether or not it was worth it for days. About a third of the cost was delivery - because I live in a 6 floor walk up. Also I don't have a closet, and this dresser has an enormous amount of space compared to what else I was seeing on craigslist and other vintage sites. Plus since it's nice I wont destroy it or junk it whenever I move next after years and years. Plus, it's a pre-existing piece of furniture from a local place not just a huge global chain with international shipping from a supply warehouses. Plus I'll use it every single day. I'm still a little stunned by how much I spent on a dresser but it will hugely impact my day to day and more space will be the right call. My last dresser was an IKEA dresser I had for 2 years, didnt assemble correctly, was only using half of the drawers as a result of, then junked when I moved. I dont want to do that ever again.

I hate to admit with the stress of home isolation and finally having some money plus moving house I bought a couple very expensive things I wanted without as much need as I'd like. Things I did right were: try to get things I have to fill the void-- can I work with equipment I already have? and research (although I could have done more), I did look into what was the best bang for the buck. What I should have done more of is consider whether I'm really going to keep using it. I do this all the time, I want a new hobby (to be fair I do the majority of them regularly) and will invest in something without being honest with myself over how badly I want it.

Timely and well thought out! I took notes! I recently shopped my house. I moved into a new apartment and had donated and tossed out a lot of stuff. I needed to figure out better storage and better ways to organize what I did have. I began looking at my things a bit differently. How could I make practical use of my things? I have an old dresser and now it fits beautifully in my bathroom housing towels and sheets along with toilet paper and other bathroom necessities. You’ll be amazed at what you can find in your home to repurpose and or to multi task!
When might you do a collab with say WealthSimple for those of us over 50 who need a chance in this world to save and retire! I love your tips and incorporate a lot into my life but I don’t know how to increase my income without going to work fast food or retail. I’m 55 with neuropathy and dealing with cancer. Those are jobs too hard on me physically. I intend to be around a while and I’d just like to live comfortably later in life! Thank you!!

I know America sucks for being on benefits but you sound like you deserve a pension of some kind from your government so you don't have to work. You have cancer, you should be allowed to focus on healing yourself and only working if you want to. I hope you kick cancer's ass btw xo

I was aaaaalmost gonna make an impulse purchase, but then I remembered that I watched this video earlier today. I'm confident I still want it but I'm going to wait it out until after at least a few more shifts and see where I'm at then (I'm a server, so my pay varies). Thanks again, Chelsea and TFD!

Thanks for number 11. I just realized I was wasting enough time in traffic to be equivalent to $400 monthly based on my salary. It makes my dorm rent away from my parent's house much closer to work feel much better.
That $400 is about half what I make monthly.

I easily blow over 100 on my hair. My cut, full head highlights plus gloss colour and wellaplex all usually mounts to £200, which I do every 4 months, and then another 150 on Keratin smoothing.... Hair is the one thing I spend a lot of money on with expensive hair products as well

When I want something but I am not sure, I will leave and tell myself if I go back to the store and still want it, I will get it. Sometimes I do this 2-3 times before I buy something. Works great in thrift shops because it ends up being gone so you don't spend.

on the subject of brand names, i would say look into the re-sale value. Sometimes its worth buying high end items, when the re-sale is great. I.e. potentially limited fad items will sell higher sooner but drop off to being worthless later, were as classic pieces from brands who always do price increases will get you most, if not more than, of your money back.

When I needed a new phone I needed a big battery and a good storage on it and it being a very safe phone if I were to ever drop it on the ground. I ended up with a Cat S41 smartphone instead of an iPhone and the cost was approximately 1/3 of the most recent and coolest iPhone.

I was online shopping the other night, when I couldn't sleep. I didn't have my cc on me so I put my phone aside and thought I'd buy them in the morning. I looked through the items the next day, while the clothes were cute, I thought about when I'd wear them and get use of them. I emptied my cart. My personal card is stored well away from me. For every non essential purchase (everyday purchases, like groceries, go on a joint card), I think to myself "is this worth the effort of getting my card?" Usually the answer is no.

In my case If I know the product is gonna last several years I'll buy it I don't have time for shopping i bought some casual shoes for $250 7 years ago they're still going strong. I think people should be focus on the materials they're buying and the quality I see spending as investment on stuff I don't have to worry for a long time.

A beginning for cost per wear for me is will I wear it too $1 wear. Most things are way way more worn then this but good start. For more formal wear like dresses I try to get to $25 A wear so a $100 dress I see myself wearing it at least 4 events.

Today I spent over 750 dollars, and I don't even regret it... most of that was a necessary payment to the mechanic and a medical appt, but still it was odd to spend nearly 1,000 dollars in one day. I've been very consistent about saving the last few years, and now that I've been in my new job for nearly a year, it felt amazing to have the money to attend to useful things that three years ago I probably would have just ignored to my own detriment because I didn't have enough cushion to spend money on them.

This is spot on!! I've often thought about how many hours I would have to work for a particular item and many times said too many hours of my time to buy something. Also, just recently I was going to buy a Kitchenaid mixer because I figured it's better than the one I have but decided to just walk away because I knew that I wouldn't bake anymore with it. It's good to hear someone else say these kinds of things about spending money. Thanks for your wonderful content!

Agree slightly. Some high end brands have cheaper, less fancy versions of their products which are good quality but just have less bling or fewer functions. Then there's also the question: how good a quality do you need? I buy drugstore makeup for example because it does the job and my livelihood/happiness is not dependent on the flawlessness of my appearance.

I just bought a new phone without the old one being broken for the first time - I started to notice my 3-5-year-old second-hand iPhone developing a few 'quirks' and I realised that planned obsolescence was gonna kick in soon. Instead of waiting for my phone to die and then frantically spending £300+ on a replacement, I sold my iPhone while it was still in good condition, and got my new (and more up-to-date) phone half price from the same phone-upcycling site. I saved myself almost £200 by selling my phone a little early and even ended up with a more recent model at the end of it!

I tend to be the type that will over think any expense that is not in my normal budget and I'm working at trying to get better about the ones that are technically in budget particularly food items I'd like to try or that are on sale but I didn't really need but don't put me over budget because of the wiggle room I have in my food budget that perhaps I shouldn't.
Meanwhile my mother-in-law lost the oven in her stove due to a power surge and I've been helping her look into options to replace it. We got a free estimate from a repairman who told us that the two parts that were burned out would cost more than the whole stove on their own. We looked at replacing the whole stove but the range still worked and wouldn't justify that cost. Finally we've decided to get a counter top toaster/convection oven.
