Yes, this sport is the definition of insane. The highest ever speed on one of these bikes were 362,4kph/226,5mph. With its 290 HorsePower engine and minimum weight of 160kg/350lbs the Power/weight ratio is incredible. The 1-1.8 Power/weight ratio and almost none protection, there is ofcourse deaths. The most recent was a 17year old at the Italian GP last year.

I would not say almost no protection, infact the helmets past the most rigorous testing for safety in the world, they have to pass the EU, Japan or DOT standards first, then go through an even more rigorous testing standard, and then the suits are multilayered leather with the hump for neck and back protection plus the airbag systems which can be deployed 2 times each (2 crashes or twice in bad multistage crashes)

As someone who does amateur moto gp racing and been in my fare share of accidents the reason people look like they flail around is you're taught to relax all you muscles when you slide. When you tense up you are more likely to break bones. Thats why when drunk drivers are in bad accidents they tend to survive because they are very relaxed and loose.

Been on motorcycles literally ALL my life... from when I was a baby, and my parents would take me out on night rides to get me to shut up and go to sleep... haha...
A proper layer of full-grain leather will take a slide at 100 mph for up to 8 to 12 seconds on asphalt... Then the stuff gets "studs" of steel or carbon fiber, and armor inserts to help the jacket conform to the torso, and the legs support the long bones and hips and knees. Boots get ankle braces and ANSI equivalent to old-school steel toes... ALL this has a fair degree of padding inside anyway, with vents tailored in so air can flow to keep riders as cool as is feasible under the conditions, while avoiding "ballooning"... If you look close to the riders' backs, you can see the shell addition that lines up with the rear of the helmet... AND yes, there's such a thing as a neck protector, which adds a layer of material between the shoulders and helmet with between 1/8 and 1/4 inch (3 to 6 mm) of space so you can still turn your head easily, but so that landing on your head won't necessarily crush your cervical vertebrae out of existence...
Finally, a recent development/upgrade is the "airbag system" which generally comes with a lanyard attaching the rider to the bike, itself. If for any reason, the rider is separated from the bike such that the lanyard is pulled beyond its limit, the airbag actuates, which takes about 5 milliseconds... Adding yet another layer of impact protection...
AND for those "seasoned" at racing and riding extremes, YES, there is a procedure. More or less, it involves tightening your fists next to your head OR grabbing the neck protector or flaps on your "jacket" (quotes since racing leathers are often one-piece units), and trying mostly to just keep your legs slightly bent and springy. You're GOING to hit the ground hard, especially from a "high side" (the most violent crash other than slamming directly into another bike), so trying to "stiff leg" is only going to break stuff, and mostly YOU... BUT what happens is usually a bit more akin to the fetal position, which is actually one of the most resilient poses the human body can assume...
BTW... A "low side" is when you take a curve too aggressively or hit the brakes mid-turn too hard, and the wheels just lose traction, dropping you and the bike on the ground... It's actually relatively easy to deal with. In street riding, it's the preferred incident to have to deal with if you have any choice in the matter.
A "high side" is when you start to lose traction (usually in a curve) but somehow regain it. Invariably, this violently yanks the bike under you back to a full upright position, and catapults the rider into the air. Other than driving directly into someone else, it's THE most violent way to fall off a motorcycle... pretty much anywhere, and is the dread of every rider on any machine.
Relax and breathe... Just since my riding career started (some 30 years ago or so) gear has come a LONG way. Full facial helmets prevent smashing your face into the pavement or tarmac and grinding significant chunks out of it with every roll as you careen down the road without the bike. Synthetic materials are coming along quite well, though they still only tend to hold up to 6 to 8 seconds of 100 mph slide... BUT the core lesson to learn is that "It's not gear if it's not armor."
I LOVE to ride. I think I'd rather ride than breathe... BUT it's (admittedly) not for everyone. When taking up a motorcycle, you have to do your own risk assessment, and then accept that there are consequences for the sport, even if you don't race. It also comes with a pretty steep learning curve in the beginning, but it's highly rewarding and probably the best feeling in the world... aside from MAYBE flying. ;o)

The ones where the rider get's launched off the bike are called highsides. The rear tire loses traction during a corner, it slides sideways but then shortly after it regains grip. This instantly pulls the rear tire in line with the front (because of the gyroscopic effect of a bike). This happens with such a force the rider is flung off the bike.
Good thing they have airbags in their leather suits...

  • @thatguyjames296
    @thatguyjames296 2 года назад +2

Since you would like to know how a highside accident occurs, I shall enlighten you. In a corner, the rider will intentionally slide the rear of the bike to help rotate quicker. However if the rider doesn't commit fully and steers too lightly, it will cause the rear tyre to lose grip for a split second and then violently regain it, causing the bike to take off suddenly. So basically, the rear tyre starts sliding and snaps, making the bike move violently to the opposite side and creating a "bucking" effect

4:49 it's to protect their arms, when they crashed especially barrel rolling, it's to minimize the probability of their arms getting broken
    - the last time the sport took a life of a rider was last year, from Moto3 class, a Swiss Moto3 rider named Jason Dupasquier (19yo), crashed in qualifying and sustained a fatal injury
-and from another championship (WorldSSP), in supersport 300 class, a Spain rider named Dean Berta Vinales (15yo), the cousins of MotoGP rider Maverick "Top Gun" Vinales, also passed away due to head injury and thorasic injury because of the crash

  • @Adi-kf6bq
    @Adi-kf6bq Год назад

6:49 what happened there was a highsider. A highsider happens when the rear tire loses traction and starts sliding. Eventually the rear tire gets grip again wich causes the suspension to compress. At a certain point the bike will start to get back up wich leads to less force in to the suspension. And when the suspension decompresses you'll get thrown up in the air and there is nothing you can do except to prepare for the impact

  • @dimetime35c

The worst are what's called a high side crash. Its when your lose grip on the back then as the bike rotates around the back tire gets grip and it launches you forward off the bike. The thing about a high side is its not just a crash it can be considered a fall from hight.

These highsides are very nasty, the rear wheel looses grip, the bike slips on the ground, suddendly the rear gets the grip back and you go into the air and lands hard. Thats makes these accidents so dangerous. But the protection suite is incredible. The leather is the best you can buy, and with the airbag some pilots walks away even after a 300+ crash

The advancements in protection technology during the past two decades is the reason why most riders are able to walk away after crashes like those, just to give you guys an idea as to what riders actually wear:
    1. A one piece leather suit with padded shock absorbers and other protectors
    2. A back protector for the spine
    3. Two chest protectors
    4.Metal/leather gloves
    5.Leather boots
    6. Helmet but not just any helmet, its has to follow FIM regulations
    7. An integrated airbag system which activates at the time of the accident literally in milliseconds
All this weighs about 15-20kg .

The Isle of man TT is by far the most impressive spectical on this planet. If you want to see the most insane thing a person can do on a motorcycle, you need to check it out! It's basically maximum speed racing on actual public streets rather than a dedicated race track. However, it's also the most extreme when it comes to crashes as the sheer number of fatalities at that race is insane. Since the first race back in 1907, there has been around 255 deaths. So I would maybe shy away from some of the wreck videos if you are at all uncomfortable with watching fatal incidents...
The best video I have ever seen about the Isle of man TT is from a channel called face085. The video is called Isle of Man TT - The greatest show on earth!

3:16 On average, over a race distance the bikes will go 160 to 185 kph (100 to 115 MPH). But that is AVERAGE. On the longer straights like Mugello or Qatar, the bikes can breach 300+ kph (186+ MPH).
As to the oft repeated question of how they are not dead, since... 2015? I think it was, all riders must wear one piece race leathers with airbags built in, with the most common two being Dainese and Alpinestars' racing airbags. As well, a full set of professional leathers are 1.2 or greater mm thick kangaroo or cowhide leather, backed by a flexible carbon fiber layer (as in carbon fiber that has not been resin impregnated), which itself is backed by Nomex fireproof cloth and an internal mesh to allow for the leathers to breathe a little. They are also fully armored, with exo-skeletal race boots that have a torsion point that prevents their feet twisting over an internal "bootie" which itself carries flexible armor. They have full length shin armor along the front and knee sliders with knee pads behind. They also have elbow and shoulder sliders, full motorsports grade chest and spinal armor, forearm armor, full race gauntlet armored gloves, and the absolute top of the top spec helmets, which are often made of 3K or greater count carbon fiber with MIPS or anti-rotational internal devices on the foam crash structure.
What all this does is give the riders sliding protection at 100 MPH for anywhere up to 12 seconds on the smoother tarmac of race tracks, as each mm of proper grade leather gives you a second of abrasion protection. The flexible carbon fiber is there to add tension to prevent your arms and legs going very much in the wrong direction, as well as a "last gasp" bit of abrasion protection. The airbags are driven by electronics, and if the sensors detect that they are at a dangerous angle, or the accelerometers built in detect a sudden and violent change of direction that usually means the rider is being launched into a highside, it deploys in under a tenth of a second and provides excellent crash protection. Riders will still get injured, as Marc Marquez will tell you with his broken leg, broken wrist, broken collarbone (twice!) and the like, but it's better to be injured than dead or paralyzed.
Aslo, why these crashes keep happening is that these riders are quite literally on the razors edge of adhesion and control. These bikes must weigh minimum of 160 kg (350 lbs) full wet ready to race without the rider, and these engines are so high tech that from V4's and inline-4's you're getting 290 HP. There is also no ABS, but there is electronic suspension allowed for race starts with an "anti-squat" launch mode, which compresses the rear suspension as far as it will go so that the bike doesn't squat during a full power launch. This is why at 1:50, when he braked as the other rider meandered over, he locked up for a split second on the front, the weight of the rider and bike wanted to keep going forward, and he did what is known in the motorcycle world as an "endo," which is short for "end over end," basically the opposite of a wheelie.

The reason there have'nt been any deaths recently is coz no one has been hit from behind by a speeding motorbike after they've fallen off. Simoncelli and tomisawa died this way. Luis salom was hit by his own bike after it rebounded from hitting the airfence and died. The airbags will limit injuries to an extent if you are thrown off the bike but wont protect when a bike hits you at speed.
