Treating an injured tusker suffering from abscess in the back after a battle between another tusker

- You may remember, that we recently brought you a video of a Tusker, who got hopelessly defeated in a vigorous fight with another tusker during ‘musth’ - the time at which male elephants get their testosterone levels escalated 60 to 140 times greater than other times of the year. Do you remember how he was given basic treatment to prevent a fatality, and a series of follow-up treatments were planned while an officer was appointed to keep track of the animal? This video is about the same Tusker.
The officer called the Wildlife office in the area and informed, them that this Tusker suddenly collapsed near a water point in a field, on the border of the village. Immediately, the wildlife team reached the Tusker, with their first aid and rescue kit. Even though not much time has passed since the fall of this animal, villagers have managed to cover the Tusker with leaves and give him pineapple and jackfruit to eat. What a kind gesture!
The officers reached the injured creature, removed the leaves and started inspecting the animal. He has several deep wounds with maggot infestation all over his body including the rear side, tail, leg and neck area causing some repulsion. All these wounds are a result of the vigorous fight over dominance. It is evident, that, the fall was due to diminished body energy. And, to replenish the lost vim and vigour of the animal, Vets decided to administer about ten bottles of Saline with added Glucose, immediately. This is administered through a cannula that is connected to the back of the animal’s ear after cleaning the area thoroughly.
The saline is only a first aid to rescue the animal from the current situation and get him energized. Other medicines such as antibiotics, multivitamins, and painkillers are also prepared by the Vets, according to the body size of the animal. These immunity-boosting medicine will be injected intramuscularly.
As for the third step of treatment, the wounds are cleaned by removing the maggots and rinsing off the wounds with hydrogen peroxide. To clean some deep wounds, they use saline too. Once the wounds are clean, they use an on-site prepared medicine using the povidone-iodine solution and negasunt powder. This is streaked into the wounds in the leg, rear side, tail and neck area, using a syringe.
As mentioned at the beginning of this video, this injury is a result of a vigorous fight between this tusker and another one. It is not an injury caused by any human. The reason for the fight between these two tuskers is also natural, especially during musth.
However, getting back to the condition of our protagonist in this video, this poor tusker has lost miserably to his opponent with severe wounds and one that even cuts into his lungs. Luckily he was noticed by villagers and they were quick to take action. Perhaps, the other tusker that fought with this one is also badly injured or even could be dead. Our wildlife team is also keeping a tab on it.
Now that the cleaning and medication of the wounds are over, they spray an antiseptic on the wounds. That is what you see in blue colour splashes. This spray prevents the formation of maggots.
Now with ten bottles of saline in the system, the animal’s energy is boosted. So he is trying to get up. The wounds sure must be hurting. That could be another reason for the tusker’s struggle. The Vets remove the cannula connected to the elephant’s ear as it is not needed anymore. The animal keeps trying to get up but he is not yet fully energized for it. So he gets some more drugs injected into him intramuscularly.
Now, the treatment is over and the elephant needs to be raised. As the elephant can’t get up on his own, the officers decide to bring a tractor, tie the elephant to it and raise him from this muddy area with the help of the officers. The officers are mindful not to hurt or injure the animal while doing this. The plan did not work. The elephant could not be raised. So, they bring a JCB Machine and try to lift the elephant with its aid. It worked! After a couple of minutes, the officers direct the elephant towards the forest.
When the wildlife officers got here first, they actually thought that it will not be possible to raise this elephant up. But thanks to the medicines, and the efforts of the wildlife team, the elephant could get up and walk. That means, his condition is improved. Now, as the next step, the officers appointed a range officer to take care of this elephant until the next treatment is done in due course.

Could you do something about an elephant in similar plight, lodged in the jungles of Dhoompara - Kalabari (Distt. - JALPAIGURI, West Bengal), India. It's apparently in a lot of pain due to injuries sustained sometime ago and there isn't much of a help coming its way so far.
Normally they don't injure so much. Perhaps it was a lonley single Elephant which injured him. I hope he get a better health now.

i have to ask, isnt this interfering with nature? this elephant is not dying because of an accident or something done by humans, this is a natural process. elephants fight for dominance and the losers often die. this is a part of the natural balance of the ecosystem. it may be grim to think about, but how many animals may have starved after the elephant was saved?

We humans are defined by our need or ability to change our environment and fight nature on all fronts. It's so heartwarming to help animals, especially ones that we hurt and I guess we have to make up for the sins of destroying their habit and poaching them, but is saving a twice beaten male the objectively right thing to do or is it only the compassion that drives people to do it? To get back to what I said in the beginning, animals don't quite fight nature the way we do and this elephant's death would've been as natural as I could ever be...
