  • To learn more about the documentary film "Carving the Divine - Buddhist Sculptors of Japan": www.carvingthe...
Hosted by filmmaker Yujiro Seki, Carving the Divine TV is a series of Q&A sessions with Buddhist scholars and practitioners. These Q&A sessions explore the basic concepts of Buddhism and the history of Buddhism so that when viewers finally watch Carving the Divine they will get the maximum value of the documentary.
Today we will be talking about Jodo Shinshu. Jodo Shinshu is a school of Pure Land Buddhism in Japan. Pure Land Buddhism is one of the most popular forms of Japanese Buddhism and Jodo Shinshu is one of the few Japanese Buddhist schools to become very popular outside of Japan because of its simple, yet profound teaching. Today we have a special guest, Rev. Enrique Galvan-Alvarez, who generously donates his time to give us a very thorough presentation of Jodo Shinshu. Without a doubt, this is one of the most impressive presentations you will ever get in your lifetime!
We will be asking important questions such as:
What is Jodo Shinshu? How is Jodo Shinshu different from Shingon, Tendai, Nichiren and Zen?
Can we talk a little about the history of Jodo Shinshu? Who was Shinran?
What are the differences between Jodo Shu and Jodo Shinshu?
What is Amida Buddha? How does it differ from the Historical Buddha?
    Is Amida Buddha God?
What is the Jodo Shinshu view of Butsuzo (Buddhist statuary)?
What is nenbutsu? How about namu amida butsu?
What is the Pure Land? Where is the Pure Land?
What is Shinjin? How can we achieve Shinjin?

My understanding is that Buddha Nature is central to Shin Buddhism. Master Shinran said that Shinjin **is** Buddha Nature. Shin holds that once we are born into Amida's Pure Land, His storehouse of grace sparks or vivifies our hitherto "dormant" Buddha Nature, which action permits us to fulfill our aspiration to Buddhahood, i.e., we become Buddhas.

Yes, not sure about the English translation here, but certainly Jodo Shinshu not only accepts the doctrine of Buddha Nature but also has its unique interpretation of it. I would agree that Shinjin is correlated with both Bodhicitta and Sugatagarbha.
