This match is basically a mirror reflection of the 2017 World Championships Grand Finals. 2017 - Fan wins 1st set, Ma wins next 3, Fan evens it up to 3-3, Ma wins 2020 - Ma wins 1st set, Fan wins next 3, Ma evens it up to 3-3, Fan wins To see these two in the Olympic finals will be a godsend for us! Major major props to both players! This was really quite a legendary match, one highlighting the current and future legend of the sport. This was so close that the winner of the match came down to a couple of key factors: 1. Backhand: Fan Zhendong very clearly has the superior backhand between the two, and he uses it to his full advantage. Fan won the majority of their backhand exchanges, and he exploits the down-the-line shot whenever Ma turns the corner or overcommits to the backhand side, leaving the wide forehand open. However, we rarely see Ma play the down-the-line backhand, and I believe it's because it opens up a can of worms-- Fan's forehand. If Fan plays the forehand, then there's the possibility that a high-quality shot is returned to either the forehand or backhand, leaving Ma to really guess which option will occur. Furthermore, Fan's close table game has improved so much that he will likely be able to reach and return those down-the-line shots since he is standing so close. Therefore, Ma's best bet is to play the safer option, Fan's backhand, where he can expect the ball to come back to his backhand. However, in my opinion, Ma's forehand is much more on par with Fan's, and had he forced some more forehand to forehand rallies, he may have edged him out more: 9:56, 10:09, 10:16, 10:22, 0:30(even tho Fan won off a lucky edge), 1:04 etc... 2. Consistency: Fan, at this point, is fairly consistent with controlling the short game, and he is very consistent in returning the shots during rallies as well. This pressures Ma to find the best opening to attack first in order to win. However, this is also where Fan's backhand gives Ma more trouble. Especially in the last set, Fan used the backhand flick a lot to exploit different service return positions, something he did less of in the first six sets. Furthermore, Fan isn't afraid of Ma's opening, especially when he can predict the opening attack. Thus, he's very consistent in returning opening shots, enabling him to place the ball in more favorable positions. 3. Tactics: Fan stuck to the fundamentals. He simplified the game as much as possible and really played into his strengths--placement and power. This ultimately gave him the edge, but we have to give tons of credit to Ma here too. He was very creative on the backhand side, playing a lot of fast backhand and forehand combinations. He also served to Fan's middle as well as the short backhand side. He also utilized a lot of fast long serves to set up a turn-around forehand third ball attack. However, when Fan started to open up on service return attacks, this was a game-changer in game 7. And ultimately, despite Ma's relentless attacks, Fan was always there for the solid block. In this match, it came down to consistency, power, and overall close-to-the-table speed. Although Ma, in my opinion, had a better forehand-backhand transition during attacks as well as speed, he was just a bit further away from the table and was moved around just a bit more. All in all, I think both players deserve tremendous respect and applause, as this was everything a table tennis viewer could have asked for! Definitely looking forward to the next couple of months as well as 2021!
Wow man. So beautifully put. The match was Just "speechless". These two r the Epitome of TT. Crazy rallies, electrifying speed, jaw dropping shots. Etc. Ma has only one assignment to do( my humble two cents). Post-injury, he has been continuously struggling in returning "down the line bh shots made by his opponents". Fan vividly takes advantage of this. He forces ma to play bh to bh and suddenly, speedily changes the direction and plays down the line (to ma's fh) which ma is unable to take(most of the times). This is done to ma by hari, lin yun ju and other players who have faster and accurate bhs. Dima was also seen doing that yesterday. I believe ma is still playing at some 80-90% of his level, mainly due to his knee injury. If he is able to revert this "down the line" shots made by his opponents, no one will stand a chance, including fan. Thanks (ma long's fan, fan's admirer).
Fan Zhendong's coach is world champion Wang Hao. Wang Hao's "strategy" on the backhand has improved him a lot. Fan Zhendong used it very well in last year's final.
I felt , ma long was returning almost every ball on backbend side of fan in initial sets and fan was ready for backbend ...it Was easy for fan... Ma long realized this bit late and bear the cost of initial sets. Ma changed strategy and placing most of the balls in middle the table neither forehand nor backbend of fan. This strategy worked for ma and fan almost forgot that he could play forehand and trying to catch every ball with beckhand which did not work for him which cost the sets . In last set , fan realized the ma's strategy and started playing both forehand and backhand... It is fantastic to watch them and they are lightning fast ...Thanks for the video !!

Jan ove waldner had different style of playing but he won't have a chance to stand against Ma if we play him.

He is not putting much pressure on his right knee as its not completely recovered . which is wise .But no excuse for his loss. Though to play at this level at his age is another feat. But to overpower fan, who right now reminds me of prime zhang jike is never going to be easy even if Ma long is perfectly fit. Fan has improved tremendously . And the bad news for his opponents is, he is just getting better and better by every single tourney mentally ,physically and technically .

I found the video with a Vietnamese commentator, he didn't speak during the rallies, it was excellent. This commentator on ITTF makes it unwatchable. Adam Bobrow at least only speaks in-between points and has an understanding of the game.
She of them Chinese commentators speak during rallies sometimes, but Im fine with it because they are pros, they are able to break down the game, make correct predictions and give insight
Take a look at the Chinese comentators. Ofcoarse not all are good, but everything from the volume of their voice to what they say is so perfect and make me want to listen to them. They aren't distracting or trying to be funny like others, they just sit down and give good comments on players, strategies, etc.
I really like fan's unique style. Hes rock solid with his physique and you can see the security in his forearm perfectly releasing power with almost perfect rhythm.

Ma Long and Fan Zhendong are so close to each other in skill, speed, and overall game tactics. Ma Long recovered well after his injuries. I think with some more training emphasizing the wide forehand for Ma Long, he can conquer this only weakness that I can really see and be dominant. Fan has perfected and exploited this weakness for a while now but Ma Long has made quite some improvements in this sector. Many of his earlier opponents tried to go to his wide forehand and Ma was able to receive most of those and win the points. With time and more practice, Ma has a very good chance of being the first person to win two Olympic golds in TT.

You should tone down your biased comment. You guys always find a reason why Ma long lose to Fan. When will you acknowledge Fan ability as the better player now? We always accepted Dan beating everybody but losing to Ma Long its time you guys start doing the same.
One of the greatest matches, it lacks to be commentated by the TT Voice; Adam Babrow, and to have a better quality video. Great start game for Ma, haven't been seen him playing this fast for quiet a while, he gave his best for sure, too sad he lost.
I think this is the highest standard match I have ever seen. Not because of any brilliant rally, or rallies, but just the overall standard. Virtually no unforced errors. Most rallies needed several winners to win the point and the accuracy and ball placement were exceptional.

One of the best matches I've seen in my short time watching Table Tennis. I love the ebb and flow of momentum between high level Table Tennis players.

She of them Chinese commentators speak during rallies sometimes, but Im fine with it because they are pros, they are able to break down the game, make correct predictions and give insight
Take a look at the Chinese comentators. Ofcoarse not all are good, but everything from the volume of their voice to what they say is so perfect and make me want to listen to them. They aren't distracting or trying to be funny like others, they just sit down and give good comments on players, strategies, etc.

@@321Doggies He used to use down the line backhand . Not like all the time but enough to keep opponent guessing .Now I think he is not that confident and comfortable to try that shot. At some stage of his career he will have to use that shot even if its 40% success rate

Ma Long and Fan Zhendong are so close to each other in skill, speed, and overall game tactics. Ma Long recovered well after his injuries. I think with some more training emphasizing the wide forehand for Ma Long, he can conquer this only weakness that I can really see and be dominant. Fan has perfected and exploited this weakness for a while now but Ma Long has made quite some improvements in this sector. Many of his earlier opponents tried to go to his wide forehand and Ma was able to receive most of those and win the points. With time and more practice, Ma has a very good chance of being the first person to win two Olympic golds in TT.
Taha Siddiqui depends on when the Olympic game is going to be held. ML cannot maintain his top form for too long.

I think this is the highest standard match I have ever seen. Not because of any brilliant rally, or rallies, but just the overall standard. Virtually no unforced errors. Most rallies needed several winners to win the point and the accuracy and ball placement were exceptional.
