Upload PDF Files to Microsoft Bing's Artificial Intelligence
In this video, I will show you how to upload PDF files on your computer to Microsoft Bing's artificial intelligence platform so that you can chat with your own PDF files.
Microsoft Bing Chat is its artificial intelligence, powered by OpenAI GPT-4. OpenAI also created ChatGPT.
First, download the Microsoft Edge browser, install it, and open the Microsoft Edge browser.
Next, identify the PDF file that you want to upload. For the purposes of demonstration, I went to the u.supremecourt.gov webpage and I downloaded their opinion in PDF format for a case called Counterman v. Colorado decided in 2023. This is the PDF file on the Supreme Court.gov webpage and it's 57 pages.
Downloading it, I now have the 57-page PDF file on the desktop of my computer.
Next, in the Microsoft Edge browser, go to bing.com.
In the Bing.com webpage, there is a search box. Grab the PDF file from your desktop and then drag it into the Bing.com search box.
Bing will then upload the PDF file from your desktop into the Edge browser.
Next, go to the upper right corner and look for the Bing Chat icon. It's a b inside of a circle in the upper right corner. Select that and you open up the chat AI window on the right side of your browser. On the left side is your PDF file.
Select your conversation style. For me, I'm selecting precise.
Now we can begin chatting with this PDF file, which is actually on my computer desktop.
So my first prompt will be, "Summarize this page in three sentences."
This is a 57-page PDF file, but I'm asking it to summarize this page, this document, in three sentences.
For the purposes of the Microsoft Bing Chat AI, it's best to refer to this PDF file as "this page." So whenever I put in a prompt, I'm going to reference "this page," which is actually this 57-page PDF file. Then the chat AI will know to focus its processing on this PDF file, which is on this web page.
The prompt is, "Summarize this page in three sentences." Press enter.
And the chat AI says, "Searching your page for information." So it's only searching this page, with the PDF file, not the internet. And it's generating the answer.
Here, the chat AI says, "This page is a summary of the Supreme Court opinion that decided whether the First Amendment requires subjective mental state for the truth threats of violence. The Court held that the state must prove that the defendant was reckless in making a statement that would cause a reasonable person to fear harm. The court also vacated the conviction of a petitioner who had sent hundreds of Facebook messages to a local singer, some of which were threatening."
So, as I requested, this is a three-sentence summary.
Now that the chat has acknowledged this PDF document, we can do whatever we normally do in a Microsoft Bing Chat session. For example, here I'm going to ask it a question. I'm going to ask it, "Based on this page, who wrote the opinion?"
So Supreme Court decisions are called opinions, and so I'm putting here, "Based on this page, who wrote the opinion?" I recommend that every prompt you make some reference to this page, which contains the PDF file.
So, "Based on this page, who wrote the opinion?" Press enter.
And the Bing Chat AI says, "Searching your page for information." So it's searching this PDF file on this page and nothing else in the internet.
And Bing generates an answer.
So we can ask questions regarding this PDF document. We can, like I just did, ask who wrote this opinion, Justice Kagan. We can also ask it to summarize the facts of the case.
I put here, "Summarize the facts of the case in less than 50 words."
Based on this page, summarize the facts of this case in less than 50 words.
The Bing Chat AI says, "Searching your page for information."
So then it gives me what I requested, which is a summary of the facts.
