    When the black dog is barking, very little else is heard. One of the tragedies is that you feel, you know no-one else can help. It becomes that cut and dry. That's when courage to ask for help often eludes us.
    Please, all lovers of this great game and knowing the impact that mental health can have , life and death, don't throw the dummy pass, throw the perfect pass to a mate and connect. My psychiatrist of over 25 years knew my family and knew we were high achievers and (most probably) over thinkers. Don't get me wrong, bad stuff happened, but the why? why me? why? is the ultimate threat when you keep loading on those questions. Here's the answer that saved my life, took 61 years to arrive, it is what it is. Life. It reduced my thought processes down to two simple questions: is this good or bad for me? Good meant taking the next step forward with hope and caution. Bad meant STOP. RED LIGHT. No energy in that direction and if you do, reach out.
    True blue, and maroon and all the colours that make up this great sport.

    "She'll be right" has changed meaning. It used to mean chin up and keep fighting, it will turn around. Now it means "nothing matters".
    We need to ditch the newer meaning and get back to the original meaning and not think it in a shallow way. Life is tough. Let's not be flippant about that. Let's be compassionate and careful to listen.

    • @GrahameGould

    I think Gus knows what transpired before Greeny took his own life… hence his comments. Greeny lived for the game and was let down by a decision based on rugby league 24-48 hours before he took his life… it wasn’t the only thing that brought him to where he was but it absolutely played a part. A business decision that was taken personally …. This happens unfortunately in life but always look after your mates.

    With all due respect, why is everyone assuming this particular case has ANYTHING to do with rugby league. Its a very sad time but to assume the NRL or league has anything to do with the passing of this very successful man is very shallow. It could have been a contributing factor but it may have been something so much more personal. Maybe family problems, maybe health maybe anything but rugby league. Stop examining and re examining this very sad story and leave the man to rest in peace and more importantly let his family get on with their lives!

    • @GrahameGould
      @GrahameGould 2 года назад

      It has everything to do with Rugby League and every other area of life. If we see looking after each other as core to everything we do, we can help improve this.
      Paul Green lived for be a good player and then a good coach. He seems to have found his value and meaning in success, and had received to very serious knocks to his confidence as a man and coach at the Cowboys and then even worse at Qld.
      And then it seems that he received another knock recently and felt he had nothing to live for.
      Which is very sad since he left behind a family. The source of his depression/hopelessness/whatever should have been recognised by someone in the NRL and the QRL, and even the Cowboys, and they should have checked on him. And I'm not saying they didn't. Maybe nothing more could have been done but that seems highly unlikely.
      And I don't say this to blame anyone. Just like I don't think that was Gus's point either, or anyone else's. It was just some honest introspection and reflection on how important it is to keep an eye out on each other.

    And so what are all you people doing for Finch at the moment? Nothing. In fact no that’s wrong, you’re condemning and gossiping. Hypocrisy and empty platitudes. And that’s why people suicide because they know people are full of it and if they did “reach out”, no one wants to listen, despite what you say now. Especially women, who loathe weak men. Try telling your long term girlfriend you’re depressed and see what happens, hint, it’s not what they say with their empty platitudes, they’ll run a mile. Mates? Not interested, all they want is for you to entertain them, they don’t want to hear depressing stuff, it bores them and they think you’re a pain. My wife suffers depression and it doesn’t matter how much you console, she will find something to be depressed about, one thing resolves another one starts. Only advice I can give is - and I also suffer depression since age 14 - life is not perfect and it is your wanting for things you don’t have, be it material or emotional, doing this to you, and it is all nonsense. In the end, “she’ll be right” is too simplistic but actually pretty wise, because it will be, and you are telling yourself it won’t be. Telling men to be more like women, to cry and talk, is nonsense that women and ex sporting stars say because they’re told to, it’s the going advice, the latest thing. You must be and find yourself, and pretending to be a woman will confuse matters to no end.

    The fact that we can't detect or predict.. it's one thing for people to check in and offer a shoulder and hand... but the stigma around opening up is still significant to the extent that people feel they can't talk about these matters and need to just toughen up or swallow it and not burden their loved ones until the point where they feel they need to escape despite knowing how badly it will hurt their family.

      @@lukem2260 I don't know if you're trying to get an education because you really don't know or you're trying to make some sort of argument. If it's the latter, it's unclear what your point or stance is. If you want to know the origin of the 2 party system, go research it. As for the media being dominated, it's due to certain individuals e.g. Rupert Murdoch monopolizing it, but this isn't like North Korea where we are told what to believe and say and act... there are independent media sources - even more so now with the internet. People are free to voice what they want, they can choose left leaning media or right or even parts of both...
      What does this have to do with my original post saying society needs to strive towards correcting the situation and stance against acknowledging it's short comings around mental health and victims ability to assist others in helping them prevent and or overcome it?

    The saying "she'll be right" is perfectly fine to say. It's a saying all Australians say. Don't blame the saying! There should be no blame. What a copout.
