"Indian Reservation (The Lament of the Cherokee Reservation Indian)" is a song written by John D. Loudermilk. It was first recorded by Marvin Rainwater in 1959 and released on MGM as "The Pale Faced Indian", but that release went unnoticed. The first hit version was a 1968 recording by Don Fardon - a former member of the Sorrows - that reached number 20 on the Hot 100 in 1968 and number 3 on the UK Singles Chart in 1970.

I still have the 45 of this. Thanks for posting the video. One issue with the original video, Cherokees are from the east coast, around Georgia, but the video shows scenes from the desert southwest. My mother's side of the family were marched on The Trail of Tears and settled in southeast Kansas and northeast Oklahoma. Okla humma means Red People

I remember this back in 1968. I liked this version a little better than the Mark Lindsay version with the Raiders.

And then it was recorded by Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere and the Raiders, released as "Cherokee Nation" with some editing of the lyrics in 1971 and rose to #2. I like Fardon's version better.

They were simply "Raiders" at that point, and it went to #1 in July 1971 in the US. I remember that July very well. Mark recorded it with The Wrecking Crew, but it was released as a Raiders song for name recognition, even though Mark had already had hits with Arizona and Silver Bird.

@@fmmaj9noname332 Yes. I grew up in rock in Seattle and saw them a few times at battles of the bands before they agreed to put on silly costumes, and was 20 at that time, so I also remember it well. I was not a fan of PR&R in any of it's iterations because I knew other PNW bands that were so much better. Mark's singing was decent, tho, and most folks assumed he had native blood due to this song and his appearance, but I don't believe that he did.

If Elvis had cut this song, it would have sounded a lot like this

One of my all-time favs, Sammy! Great stereo sound and agree with Bob Zwolinski's and Sharon Elliott's comments - it's really the best version! Many thanks and have a happy Hump Day! Cheers, E.H.
