  • Selene is the personified moon in Greek antiquity, and yet she is much less represented in myth and ancient art than you might expect. This video covers what we know about this elusive celestial deity.

    I’ve been a Hellenistic practitioner for going on 30 years, and Selene is number one is my little Pantheon. She’s been in my life the longest by far, and has been a blessing since the very first day.

    I find direct personification deities, like the Titans and Titanides, far easier for me to connect with and delve into relationship with spiritually. I find the physicality of their presence in the world creates a more stable bridge to reach across to contact them (and physical reminders help keep them in mind no matter where I am). Thank you for gathering these resources and references for us!

    I love to see a channel with such clearly well-researched authentic Hellenic content! I’ll admit I’m still just as lost as I was at the start of the video - I find both Helios and Selene and the other Titan personification deities harder to process or connect with than the more humanistic gods and goddesses. Did the ancients feel the same way? Both of them seem really popular in how often they are mentioned but they don’t seem to get the lore that Apollon or Athena or even Hekate or Artemis do. I’d speculate it was Olympian vs. Titan bias and yet Hekate seems to become more and more popular throughout antiquity whereas other Titans were likely to undergo syncretism with other more popular gods. Look forward to watching more content!

      You're probably right about that. It seems that even the very well-known Titans (i.e. Prometheus) have one or two major stories about them, but they aren't as important in everyday religious life. Thanks for chiming in!

      That makes sense. I imagine this is the same thought process in antiquity - can't have one without the other.

    Selene deserves better!!! I also wondered why she wasn’t used more an antiquity or a given a triform like Hekate considering she’s the literal moon!!! I feel like all those features should’ve been attributed to her just as well.

    • @hearthofhaemonia
      @hearthofhaemonia  Год назад +1

      She does!! I think the issue is exactly that she (the moon) IS so obvious and so front-and-center. So many goddesses have lunar aspects, that it's almost (at least, from a practical standpoint) redundant to have a pure lunar deity. But I agree, I wish we had more art and literature about Selene because she's awesome!

    • @randymilo212

      @@hearthofhaemonia agree!! I think they’re biting off her style imo. even if I’m not hellenist polytheist I would definitely put all of those features into my practice and worship of her.

    Thank you for your clearly laid-out information on Selene. I have been searching for knowledge about her all my life, and it is extremely hard to come by. And yet she has an unmistakeable presence that I believe was more important than our lack of records about her worship would indicate. I wonder if this is because her mysteries were highly, highly secret? We only know her as enfolded into other goddesses and worship. It really makes me wonder!

    • @hearthofhaemonia
      @hearthofhaemonia  Год назад +2

      That's definitely a possibility! The problem with trying to find secret stuff is...it's secret. I'm sure if we knew more about ancient mystery cults or smaller religious sects, our ideas about antiquity would be very different!

    your first question: yes, i do planetary magick, and sometimes work with the Moon. i'm actually looking into more of that recently, and besides, i'm up all night anyway. -your second question is a total mystery to me. i would have expected any Moon god to be as popular as the Sun or Jupiter. maybe there's just too much competition in the lunar realm for the spot? or perhaps it's more about what the Moon represents (magick, insanity, mystery), or does NOT represent, such as money, war, love, etc... -your videos are awesome, thank you for everything.

    • @hearthofhaemonia
      @hearthofhaemonia  Год назад +3

      That's a good point. Especially with some of the more popular gods (Artemis, Hera, Hekate) having lunar aspects, it would make sense for a standalone lunar deity to sort of be left behind. It's definitely weird that Helios doesn't have the same lack of representation (as far as I know).
      I'm also wondering about the insanity thing because you're right, but I don't know when that starts. I always understood "madness" to be linked to Lussa and Eros - love makes you crazy. But I guess with Selene as a quintessential love magic goddess...

    I hate to sound like a broken record but it's amazing how much of Roman Paganism is in Elden Ring.
    I know I mentioned the Tarnished Archaeologist guy before and he's kind of a hot commodity in the Elden Ring lore circles right now. Well I bring him up again because I feel like I am watching previews of what he is going to say in later videos when I watch your videos about Roman religions.
    All the things about the moon giving metal it's luster and the multiple aspects of the moon as well as elements of tutelage and the pairing with other gods all are represented in ways in elden ring.
    The whole bull thing is barely there but is kind of there.
    If you are curious about the moon giving metal it's luster check out the Silver Tears.
    I mentioned a character named Sellen and it's interesting because she is the one called the graven witch because she apparently has some spell where she mashes a bunch of sorcerers together into the kind of large sorcerous stone. That really makes me think of the mineral selenite that you mentioned. lol.
    There are also 3 moons mentions full moon dark moon and black moon. no obvious crescent moon, unfortunately.
    There is also a town named, Selen town of sorcery, that is closely connected to the so-called, "Nox," or, "night folk."
    I forgot to mention that one of the lunar queen's daughters put her soul in a dolls body and in a way is seeking a consort to become the new queen and god of the land.

    As usual I learned much but was left with intriguing questions. Thank you for pointing out this odd mixing of lunar goddesses and attributes and this lack of self-sufficiency in Selene's actions on the Classical stage.
    I am clueless about it of course! But I just wonder how and when and where the gendered assumptions about the sun and moon happened. Was the male-centric Classical era' and the Olympian religion part of an overturning of what Marija Gimbutas theorised as amore female-oriented "old Europe"? Could an emphasis on the moon re-emerge in the mystery religions with the decline of the Olympian?

    • @hearthofhaemonia
      @hearthofhaemonia  Год назад +2

      This is something I've been thinking about, but I'm not sure the answer. It seems like most lunar deities are feminine, but (like Phrygian Mēn) some are masculine. It seems like the sun is usually coded masculine, but I'd have to look more into that - I'm guessing the feminine moon is in most places a counterbalance to that energy.
      But your point about mystery cults is interesting. My first thought was the Sol Invictus cult, but that isn't really a "mystery" cult per se. As always, much to think about after reading your comments!

    Selene is the inspiration for princess serenity in sailor moon. They did change the name after the sea of serenity on the moon but they included the myth about her being inlove with Endymion. There's two versions of the myth and in one he is a prince which is the version they included. They also include Elysium in the storyline. Alot of sailor moon, an anime/manga us millennials grew up with has a lot of mythology in it just slightly altered to fit the storyline.

      @@hearthofhaemonia for example sailor Venus falls in love with Adonis and he does die in her own back story. Which is Aphrodite falling in love with Adonis in the myth. There's also Helios in sailor moon but they make him more of a guardian figure. The 3 moon cats are Luna, Artemis, & Diana. Even if you don't watch it, I'm sure you'd enjoy all of the myth connections that were made.

      @@hearthofhaemonia there's also a moon kingdom & praying to the moon. and well relics of what was left of it. And it looks just like a ancient Greek temple. If you do watch it, keep an open mind, it is a Japanese anime/manga created in the 90's. All of the main characters have past lives where they were princesses/guardians of their own planets. Example sailor Jupiter's powers are lightning/thunder based (same as Zeus/Jupiter in Roman would be). Sailor Pluto's powers are Kronos Time based. But they're all reborn in present day due to the tragic downfall of the past moon kingdom. They do regain their memories and protect the earth numerous times from outside forces. There's also a lot of mention of crystals, stars, feminism is a big theme. If you do watch it, watch sailor moon crystal because it's the most current remake and few episodes. There are 4 seasons. 4 is a movie. 5 is coming out this summer.
