Cute baby Grey Squirrels at tree hole - Huntley Meadows Virginia

This squirrel video is part of a series of nature/bird videos from Huntley Meadows. The morning air was bursting with the sounds of spring after the rain finally stopped. It was April 13, the Red-winged Blackbirds were jostling, Wood Ducks and Hooded Mergansers lurking, Osprey diving, Dogwoods blooming, wood warblers singing, with turtles, frogs and snakes abounding. On my way out at the end of a glorious day, I spotted a baby (kit) Grey Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) sticking its head out of tree hole about 12 feet up. There were at least three kits in the den, taking turns peeping out to inspect the observer, with the boldest of them scampering onto the tree trunk. Eastern Grey Squirrels typically winter in a natural tree cavity, for instance one made by a woodpecker. They use these dens during periods of cold weather while the nest itself, known as a drey, is made of dry leaves and twigs. The opening shot shows Black-capped Chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) foraging insects in a native Dogwood.

I live in the U.K. 🇬🇧 and there is a public garden near us that is well know to be full of squirrels. Locals have been feeding them for generations, so they come right up to you and take nuts out of your hand. I have had long experience of this and it still charms me every time! Love squirrels! 😍
