Thank you thank you thank you! Your method of breaking a broody chicken worked! It took three whole days, but she was ready to join the flock by the time we needed to go out of town. I took her out to the coop while it was still fairly dark in the morning and put her on a roost. Just to be sure, I closed up the nesting box so she wouldn’t be tempted. She’s back out with her peeps (😉) enjoying life. 😊🐓
Yes!!! I'm glad it worked! It can take days for the hens to come around from being broody. Sometimes it takes Coco four days. I hope your girl stays away from being broody for a long time. Cheers!!
Awww I love Coco 😂❤ when our hens go broody they don’t seem to be mean at the same time BUT there is one hen out there that’s not broody but she’ll be the one to come peck you when you try to take the broody hens eggs like she’s their protector or something. She’s hilarious. Love chickens and their little personalities and community. Thanks for sharing how you break your broody hens! 😊❤
Great info! Hehe Cocoa is not nice to be around when she is broody that’s why those girls aren’t a fan. I only had one broody and I just took the eggs out from under her and picked her out of the nest and sent her free ranging for a few days. They’re so funny when they’re broody…trying to be all nasty lol The broody growl makes me laugh
It is a bit funny how they act. No one likes them and they seem to hate everyone (including us!). It's just a process to go through. We need the eggs though! Cheers Lisa!
This video reminds me of a live where @willitgrow was talking about his broody hen and asking for tips. Someone talked about putting an ice pack under the hen as a solution they have used before!
It takes more than a few minutes with an ice pack to lower their temperature. I'm not willing to hold an ice pack for days. The basement "cool down" method seems to break them (and their temp). Thanks for stopping by!
This is a great video/tutorial for broody feather babies. I'm curious though if you've experienced multiple broody chickens and figured out a way to resolve breaking broodiness that way. I have a mix of American and English Buff Orpingtons and while it's just the end of March, I have three (two Americans and two English) that want to sit on eggs! One of the Americans and one of the English have started pulling feathers from their breast/stomach area and they are so warm. I don't want anymore chickens but having one rooster, I am so afraid that it may not be an option for me. Would love to learn from more experienced chicken owners on how to break broodiness. If you've got a rooster, more chickens seems a real possibility. You may need to get rid of him. We ended up getting rid of our Buffs as they were always broody. We sold them to people who wanted to have a broody hen. Turned out to be a win-win for everyone. I think you'll need to break them one at a time, or get a couple cages and break a couple. You might be up against a never-ending task, with the Buffs. We now have hens who are great layers but aren't the broody type. It sure is nice. Keep us posted on your progress.
Hen prison for the win! Great idea. We’ve always just locked them out of the coop during h day but it takes a while. Will definitely try this next time.
The hard bottom of the cage, plus the cool temp, slowly bring their temperature down, and "cure" them of being broody. We have found no other method that will work. Hen Prison! Cheers Lisa!
Five days?? Wow!! We just went through this and it only took two days for us to break our girl. We free range but also have a run. I locked our lady in the run and shut off her access to the coop. She paced back and forth the first day trying to get into the coop. The second day I let her free range like normal and she did good for about three hours and then went right back in the box. So I locked her up for day number two and that's all it took. The first day she acted like a crack head trying to get to her dope and the second day she sat all sad looking. It broke my heart but it had to be done.
It's usually the warmer weather that heats them up and they go broody. It's just a phase they "can" go through. Coco seems to be the only one that does it consistently. We're lucky that she is the only one. It's kinda funny but a bit of a pain in the backside! Cheers!
@@clivesconundrumgarden It's a one-at-a-time thing. Usually, you'll get one that will go broody. Certain breeds are more likely than others. Coco just loves to go broody and would probably be a great Mother!
Our hen puffs up to look bigger and clucks differently. Listen to her in the video and watch her. I know to take her outside AFTER she doesn't cluck at me in the basement and AFTER she is done puffing herself up for me. Hope this makes sense. Let us know how you do.

Hey there Rich, I watched another homesteader that also has chickens. they mentioned a little about their broody hens. They just let it run its course and not isolate them like you do. Is it OK to do it either way? How long will they stay broody if you don't break them out of it? Thanks!
We let one go for a while. The gal sat and sat and sat. She wanted to live in the nesting box. You need to do something (put eggs under her to hatch) or get her cured. Just letting her go will not cure the problem. My humble opinion.

When Coco goes broody, it's quite a process. Others (if they ever go broody) are broken in three days of cool temps. Cheers!

I'm surprised your plymouth rocks don't go broody. It can get catchy
In all our years of chickens, we've never had a Rock go broody. They are also the breed we've had the most of. Maybe we're lucky!!
