      Wakashu has nothing to do with some 3rd gender or whatever, it was a term to refer to young adolescent boys specifically. And yes they could be sexualized by older men (and women) but that's because the concept of pdf fillia didn't really exist back in the day... The gender bs is a very modern interpretetion stemming from History revisionists, the same that paint Yasuke as some sort of legendary samurai. You could have got this from a simple research of the term. Don't get your facts from AI agregators please, they fetch from all the sources, even the stupidest ones...

    wait wait wait. Wakashu? There is no such thing as a "non-binary" individual in japan called a Wakashu. Wakashu does mean "beautiful person" but it's in the context of young men, and young men exclusively. depending on the era, wakashu were seen as either child prositututes for both men and women, or simply good looking youth. it really depended a bit on the context. heck, Kabuki is a type of art/play which famously banned women from performing because too many of them were using kabuki to "advertise" their prostitution. When women were banned Wakashu were brought in to play the role of women in the plays, but they too were prostituted out in about the same numbers as the women before... eventually resulting in Wakashu being banned from Kabuki as well.
    so no. japan was neither tolerant nor accepting of "non-binary" and while older men screwing younger men (or women/girls hiring a wakashu as a male prostitute) were tolerated it was never a major societal thing.

    • @DavidSmith-cr7mb
      @DavidSmith-cr7mb 5 дней назад +37

      the thing the other person said about kabuki and women being banned for judt using ot to prostitute... very interesting... men and women are so much simpler than I thought seriously... Twitch is like, an almost 1 to 1 example of this phenomenon, where a male space is invaded and taken over by sex workers

    • @arizona_anime_fan
      @arizona_anime_fan 5 дней назад

      @DavidSmith-cr7mb I'm not sure women "invaded" a male space in the kabuki example. i think its more that the women in the space found it more profitable to sell their nighttime services to wealthy audience members then to just subsist as an underpaid actress. when the plays themselves were starting to be affected by the prostitution the ban of women in kabuki occured. of course they would turn to Wakashu to play the role of women, and wakashu of course being closely tied to prostitution for most of it's existence you can see where that lead.
      but yes. if you can't sell it with sex, sell it with sex included, seems the japanese knew this as well as our modern day simp exploiters/sex workers.

      They could have done a great AC game including Yasuke (as a side quest the size of Blood And Wine) and they could have even made a whole game about him afterwards.
      AC in particular in combination with the story of real-life Yasuke would have been perfect for that.
      But that is never what Ubisoft wanted. Or what any of those promoting inclusivity intend. Instead, they want to tear down one group by using another. And divide both.

    21:38 Just a quick addition; in real history we don't know for sure exactly who seconded Oda Nobunaga. This is due to the extremely sudden nature of Akechi Mitsuhide's betrayal and just how overwhelming the betrayal was.
    It was Oda Nobunaga's personal guard (150 men) VS Akechi Mitsuhide's entire army (13000 men).
    All we have are stories told of the night of the assassination.
    It's said that Oda Nobunaga, after putting up a spirited if futile last stand, eventually retreated to a storage room with a few remaining men while a few others set fire to the temple, under his orders. It is believed that Mori Ranmaru was among the men in the storage room, and it is believe that he seconded Oda Nobunaga. It is also believed that Mori Ranmaru, or whoever it was who did second Oda Nobunaga, was given the order to hide his (Nobunaga's) head as best he could in the burning temple that was to be their tomb.
    Naturally, since everyone who was around to witness Oda Nobunaga's final moments died to fulfill his final order of burning down the temple around them in order to better conceal his remains, we have no direct eye-witness accounts of everything that happened within the temple once the non-combatants and court ladies were ordered to escape.
    However, this means that it is impossible for Yasuke to have been Oda Nobunaga's second, because whoever who did second him was trapped in the temple while it was burning down around them. And we know for a fact that Yasuke was with Oda Nobunaga's son, Oda Nobutada, at an entirely different temple a short way's away, where he surrendered to Akechi Mitsuhide's men.

      Like in Malaysia, there are title of Dato or Tan Sri. If a the husband earns the title of Dato, then the wife will earn the title of Datin by default. Same as Tan Sri f or husband, and Puan Sri for the wife. If the wife got this title, then the husband will not get this title. And the title of Dato or Tan Sri is commonly given to people with high status like multi-millionairs or people in politics.

If your behavior actually affected your gender then men who acted like women would be considered women, no one would be able to hold the thought in their head "this is a man who...".

Because, from what I know, the Shinobi clans formed separately under Japan’s isolation to fight corrupt Japanese nobles and influential figures that acted similarly to Templars, and only after Portugal made contact did the Brotherhood officially meet with the Shinobi and have the clans join the Brotherhood as assassins under the same cause: stop the Templars, promote freedom, and protect humanity.
    But since this story takes place after Portugal’s arrival, thus why Yasuke is even there in the first place, Naoe is already an assassin as the Brotherhood is in place in Japan.

      @TrackMediaOnly 5 дней назад

      Geisha is a different thing as well. They were basically female entertainers to put it simply. Sometimes they would do other things, but geisha is a separate thing unto itself. I remember years ago geisha were often conflated as all being prostitutes, which wasn't correct. Some might do that, but it wasn't just accepted that they would do that(highly frowned upon).
      In the same vein female samurai wasn't a thing either. There were female warriors(onna musha/bugeisah), but not samurai. All were bushi(warrior[s]), but not all bushi were samurai.

    • @saymyname2417
      @saymyname2417 4 дня назад

      Not that a geisha could have never poisoned anyone but geisha weren't female assassins. Spying, however...
      Kunoichi did exist but they were nothing like the "ninja" girls of anime and films. Still, poisoning surely wasn't impossible.
      There were no female samurai in that sense. Female members of the bushi class were trained in various tactics to defend home and family or themselves or to even commit ritual offing if absolutely necessary. But they were no stormtrooping warriors.

    It just still amazes me that they thought it was a good idea to not have a Japanese male as the main character in a game set in Feudal Japan.
    It doesn’t matter if a brother was really a Samurai in those days. What matters is that your customers are expecting to play a Japanese guy in a Feudal Japanese era Assassins Creed game.

    In case anyone is confused by the existence of female Samurai - it's female NINJAS that did not exist and are first made up in 20th century in fiction. Female Warriors as a class DID exist in many cultures, but they rarely saw the battlefield in any of the cultures that had them.
    That's because, quite frankly, man and woman are different, and women are smaller, weaker and have less stamina. And while today a girl can, should she wish so, grow muscles stronger than mine, back in ancient times with food shortages etc - it was just impractical to grow a female warrior like that. She would eat more food than a male and still train and grow mass slower simply because of how the body is optimized. And even a muscular woman fighter loses to a comparable man 9 times out of 10.
    That's just biology.

      Female "ninjas" existed. They were called "kunoichi". But they were nothing like the characters from manga and anime. Just like "ninja" weren't.
      The main purpose of the MALE shinobi was to spy, cause confusion, spread misinformation and such. They might set something on fire or kill someone but the latter was rarely the case. Overall, their life was to be invisible by blending in.
      As for the jobs of the kunoichi: it was gathering and passing on information, secretly opening doors, signalling. At any costs.

    Thank you for the great video Endymion. I appreciate your care and respect for the Japanese culture. I just wanted to further explain the significance of seppuku. Even though I’m a white Canadian, I have extensively studied Japanese culture and learned the martial art of Iai-Do (the art of the Samurai sword) from several Japanese grandmasters. One of these masters taught me the concept of seppuku and the role of the second.
    If a Samurai had dishonored themselves, this would also bring shame upon their family. The only way to prevent their name and families from being disgraced in society was to commit seppuku. But seppuku wasn’t just something that you could do. The samurai had to get permission from his lord because it was viewed as a privilege. Depending on the transgression, the samurai could just be executed. Sentencing their families to live in disgrace.
    In Japan suicide never had the stigma that it did in the west. So committing seppuku was never about being killed vs suicide. Seppuku was viewed as the ultimate act of courage and best way to prove your honor. The second was chosen by the dishonored samurai and was usually a family member or close friend. The job of the second was to ensure that the samurai committing seppuku didn’t suffer more than was necessary. The second was also there to ensure the samurai followed through with the act.
    The job of the second is almost never depicted correctly in movies. Like in the beginning of “Last Samurai” when Ken Watanabe’s character acts as a second. He yells and cuts the old general’s head clean off. When in reality the whole process is meant to be refined and disciplined. The second is supposed to stand quietly in a particular stance with sword drawn. When the samurai committing seppuku indicates he is ready, the second raises the blade and again waits in a particular stance. Then after the samurai commits the act and has proven his honor. Without saying anything, the second makes one very strong but controlled cut. The goal is not to cut the head clean off. But to leave a small bit of skin and the front of the neck. That way to head just drops right into the lap of the deceased samurai. It was seen as disrespectful for the head to go rolling across the floor.
    There is much more and the philosophy behind the whole act of seppuku could fill a book. Sorry for the history dump. I just wanted to share some knowledge on a subject that is often depicted incorrectly.
    Anyways, thank you to anyone who made it this far and thank you for what you do Endymion!

I enjoyed the portrayal of Lisbon in that game, I feel they portrayed the earthquake really well, and i think it was a strong motivation for the main character to defect to the templars, and credit where it's due, the Portuguese NPCs were speaking Portuguese from Portugal, so that was nice to see. Hey if you liked AC Black Flag, I actually recommend AC Rogue, the gameplay is just copy pasting from AC4, so if you liked that one, you will like AC Rogue. The sad thing about AC Shadows regarding their take on what they believe to be progressive is the fact that Japan has a well documented history of same sex relationships by famous historical figures. At the time it wasn't even an issue and was morally accepted within the boundaries of their culture. But no, Ubisoft had to impose their "modern progressivism" without even looking into the extensive cultural material they had available. If they fucked up so bad on the things they ACTIVELY wanted to show, I won't even give a look into anything else.
