I used to do tie dye with my sister all the time. When she passed I hadn't dyed anything for about 5 years. But I still had the kit I used with her so I've been doing some shirts because I thought it would be an awesome way to celebrate her memory
I am very sorry for your loss no mater how much time has passed. I think doing something that you use to do with your sister is a wonderful way to celebrate the life she had with you.
I'd suggest doing the design offset to the side instead of directly in the middle. Imagine that top line as the being just around the rib area. I think that would distribute the design better across the dress (unless it's a short dress). Good luck!
Thanks! It is just upholstery thread on sewing needle then go in & out of the fabric following the line you drew. It's commonly referred to as a basting stitch. I hope that helps!
Chloe, You never know what you can do until you try and that goes for more than just tie-dye, anything. So please never say you can't do something until you have attempted it. Don't set limitations on yourself- this world will try hard enough to do that for you. Never "trying" can make you miss out on too much in life. :) Go be awesome.
LOL, I will see what I can do for you if I can find time...and socks. I don't really sell socks so I have not done any in a long while. But as an suggestion I would recommend doing an accordion fold on tube socks, try alternating colors on the opposite side when you dye for a cool effect too. :)
It's flat artificial sinew. It's has a slightly waxy feel to it so it doesn't soak up dye like twine or cord would. You can find it at most places that sell dye online and some craft stores (usually around leather goods). It's better to me than rubber bands when you need really precise lines.
Looking for some cool projects to do with my son this summer. He'll love this. I did it with my dad as a kid, but it was usually just a splotch type thing for fun, and I only wore them as jammies. I'm going to try the designs with my son though. So excited!
beautiful technique Rhonda. I was thinking to do this design on a dress. first to make the dress then tye dye it. any special instructions to share? incidentally, this will be my maiden voyage to tye-dying! i'm excited!
You can either alternate your colors on top and bottom OR dye top part one color & bottom another. Example- one side red & the other yellow will give you a just a bit of orange where the two colors met in the middle.
WHAT DID YOU USE TO TIE THE SHIRT? Every tie dye video I've seen all use rubber bands. I like that the string you use to tie the shirt makes a more crisp line.
I pre treat the cotton with Soda Ash to bring the ph level of the fabric up. This helps the dyes bond to the fiber instead of just "sitting" on it (which is most common reason for fading). It's available from where you buy your dyes from, or you can use PH+ for pools. Around 1 cup per gallon of water. The longer the soak the better, but at least 20-30 minutes. The ph level of your soak can vary by your water too (soft or hard water) so use a ph test kit when in doubt for 10 or higher. Good luck!
That really depends on the fold, on this particular one it's not that important. On very detailed tie dyes I like it dry but say for tight accordion folds I like it to be a bit damp. But you will always seem to get tighter folds when fabric is wet since it clings to itself better then.
Hey, first of all awesome tutorial I am definitely going to take a crack at this design. Secondly I have a quick question, I'm wanting to start making and selling tie dye at my local markets and was just wondering if you buy your dye and shirts in bulk and if you know of anywhere online that sells them decently cheap? I'm a highschool student and a beginner so i don't have much money to start out with. Thanks so much in advance :)
Thanks & defiantly give it a try! If you are looking for dyes and blank shirts I'd suggest Dharma Trading as they sell both and you do not need a business or wholesale account to buy from them. Good luck in your endeavors! Feel free to send me a message if you have other questions. :)
I usually soak at least 30 minutes, but I have left shirts soaking for a couple of days before. As for the dye- I prefer 24 hours but at least around 8-12 hrs if at high temp (80 degrees or higher). If it's cold I'll leave them batching for 2-3 days. That gives bright colors. Hope that helps.
I'd love to be of help but I'm not really certain what you are asking? You would need to use dyes intended for dying cotton fabrics as other dyes would fade out after washing. There are people that use natural dyes- but I do not since the mordants to fix the colors are usually toxic. If you are concerned about cost for dyes- you can find inexpensive "kits" at most craft & fabric stores.
As long as your ties are tight enough the other colors should not bleed into each other. If it is a concern you can always use colors that compliment or blend (ex- blue & red touching will make a purple) or use a dark color like black to define your lines.
Never admit defeat before the battle, Chloe. Unless attempts (successful or, failed) have been made then, technically, all you can logically state is that you "have not done it." And, maybe even adding a 'yet' to the end of that statement. ☺ My personal 'credo' if you will is this: "There is nothing I CANNOT do! Only that which I have YET to do."
I think on that one I used red & orange. I only dye one side each color- like red then blue on opposite side, flip it over and green where blue is on flip side/orange on the other. Did that help/make sense?
I may consider that the next time I tie one of these up. Basically you choose your colors- lets say Example-one side red & one black. The center tie (longest tie) that actually divides the 2 halves separates the color line. Dye one side red & the small circle/eye of yin yang design black. Then alternate the colors on opposite side, dye large part black & the small circle red. I hope that helps explain it some for you, good luck with your tie dye.
I use oral pet syringes & droppers to apply my dyes. But you could use bottles. I would not suggest dipping as you cannot control the overdye well like that. I have been getting many questions on how to dye this tie though & plan on making a video on that soon. ;)
I do because I batch ash my shirts so I can use for tie dye or batik, but you can tie it wet after you soak in soda ash. It's really just a matter of preference.
I usually mix my dyes in big jars and pour out what I need into little containers (for better control). You should store them somewhere cool or in your frig. I have a plug up cooler I use when I do have access, but I dye a lot at one time. Dye losses potency over time so try to use it up within 2 weeks or only mix what you need.
Make sure your ties are very tight and apply your dye slowly. If you are very concerned with bleeding over into another area- use smaller dye applicators like (oral) syringes or even eye droppers. The twine I use is artificial sinew- which is a bit waxy- so dye doesn't soak into it. HTH!
By dyeing each side of the main fold a different color and the tie creates the separation. I have another video showing how to dye one if you think it might be of help to you.
When your applying the die how do you make sure that the die on the circles doesn't just flow over the twine and into the bigger section?... (I think that makes sense.)
Connor A' Court Sodium carbonate, it can usually be found from swimming pool supplies (used to raise PH in water) and sometimes hardware stores if your dye source does not carry it (which would be odd).
All dyes I've seen instruct to make the measurements 2/5 dye to table salt. Never said anything about putting anything on the shirt but that's what everyone does on their tutorials.
Connor A' Court I only use salts for blacks, soda ash raises the PH of the fibers so when you dye it bonds with the fiber instead of just "staining" or sitting on the fibers of the fabric. You should be using procion mx dyes as other dyes are really a waste since they just wash out and are not good for this style of dying. HTH!
Connor, there are some great recipes online for how to make soda ash. It's essentially baking soda baked in the oven over a period of 30 to 40 minutes. Google "how to make soda ash".
Waow that's perfect job keep it up pls I will try it at home but I need you to teach me well how to soak it I mean everything cause I want to be creative and talented like you
Sure you can- check me out at J Tribe Creations and there is a link in the description of the video. I do customs. I just make these videos for fellow dyers to learn from.
Hey Rhonda j @3:50 how or what type of dye is that design called. My little sister and I would like to learn how to make that one if you could inbox me please. Thanks :)

Stitching for accuracy, I hadn't even thought of it. Very smart idea!
I'm going to try this today. Your instructions are clear and make this project sound not daunting at all. Thank you for taking the time to post it!
Good luck!
Great tutorial! We're doing tie dye tomorrow at school, but I didn't just want to do simple rings, so I think I'll give this a try!
Clockwork Layton same case with me dude
Manu Hanu this was 4 years ago
Did this today following your instructions and got to say looks amazing and was so easy to follow thanks
Glad it helped!
I have honestly never seen this pattern. You made doing it look so easy. So I'm definitely going to try it!
This was a joy to watch, thank you
Tie dying with friends & family is a great way to have fun together. And yes I am southern, Georgia born!
This tie-dye is a very good idea
I love this design idea!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!
Que bello, me encanta. Gracias por compartir tus conocimientos.
Wow you're very good at doimg tie dye
I'd suggest doing the design offset to the side instead of directly in the middle. Imagine that top line as the being just around the rib area. I think that would distribute the design better across the dress (unless it's a short dress). Good luck!
Thanks for sharing a unique tie dye design to RUclips!

Great video, thank you! What kind of twine are you using here? It looks much easier than rubber bands.

Tie dye is a fun project with kids, have a good time!
Have a nice day because you said it in the end of the video 🐢
wow ur ideas giving me so much new concept in tye dye style
Glad I could help you out creatively.

Just ordered a restock of supplies and then I'm so taking a crack at this design. Thanks so much for the vid.

Sinew- it's a waxed cord and can be found online or at leather supply shops

Wow
Amei com certeza quando tiver oportunidade vou fazer, parabéns pelo trabalho 💖👏
Just FABULOUS!
LOVE IT!

Thank you so much, I was just looking at them I think I will buy from there. Thank again, and I will if I have any other questions :)

Yes I can, that's actually what I do. :) Check out the link on my channels about page for my site JTRIBECREATIONS or email me directly. Thanks!

That's my "camo" version of the yin yang design. One side is in greens other in browns.
As long as your ties are tight enough the other colors should not bleed into each other. If it is a concern you can always use colors that compliment or blend (ex- blue & red touching will make a purple) or use a dark color like black to define your lines.
I love that design! but do you know anything you can use instead of the usual dye that would help me if you replied!
this is really cool
I did this and it came out great! Thank you so much
+Cosmic Chaos Excellent! & you are welcome. :)

My personal 'credo' if you will is this:

love your voice is that southern plus am learning on how to do tie dye to bond with my stepdaughter and we are doing them together
I think on that one I used red & orange. I only dye one side each color- like red then blue on opposite side, flip it over and green where blue is on flip side/orange on the other. Did that help/make sense?

Do you have to stitch the design in first? Also, can you use elastics to tie it all?
wwwoooooowww amazing job, thanks!!!
I use oral pet syringes & droppers to apply my dyes. But you could use bottles. I would not suggest dipping as you cannot control the overdye well like that. I have been getting many questions on how to dye this tie though & plan on making a video on that soon. ;)
could you do a dying tutorial? I'm kinda new to all this and I'm not really sure how I would go about it.
Sure you can, just leave one side & opposite center circle white then dye the rest black only.
i love ur southern accent! ^.^
can you just do like a regular yin yang black & white or do you have to use colors?
I tried this and it came out awsome! I used a blue, yellow, and green color scheme
That's great!
Realy cool, but how do you pre-stich the circles?
How long do you soak in the soda ash & water? How long do you let your dye set?
Hey! I have a question. When you have your shirt tied, then you dip it in dyes or do you pour the dyes from bottles?
its very nice how much color use to dyeing one kg cotton and this is fix dyeing
Here’s one we could try.
Seems pretty easy . Awesome vid. How did u get the orange with the red and blue with the green? @RhondaJ
when you stitch the circles do you stich it both sides together, or just the front?
After doing this, the color goes out in the first wash. How would the color be long-lasting?
Please let me know.
Use soda ash to pre-soak the shirt before dying (one cup to one gallon of water). This helps the dye bond with the fibers instead of washing out.
Yes with fiber reactive dyes
Do you think you could do a tutorial for a cool design on tube socks? That would be cool and I'll subscribe.
how long before does the shirt have to be soaked in soda ash before you can dye it?
I soak for at least 30 minutes.
LOL, thanks. I not really aware of it since most folks around here have the same accent. ;)
So awesome !!
Do you let it dry after the ash?
I do because I batch ash my shirts so I can use for tie dye or batik, but you can tie it wet after you soak in soda ash. It's really just a matter of preference.
very very very coooooollllllll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if you have extra dye when you are finished is there a way you can save it?
I usually mix my dyes in big jars and pour out what I need into little containers (for better control). You should store them somewhere cool or in your frig. I have a plug up cooler I use when I do have access, but I dye a lot at one time. Dye losses potency over time so try to use it up within 2 weeks or only mix what you need.
Which kind of dye do you use? Is it cotton fabric?
Fiber reactive procion dyes and yes it's cotton fabric but you can use any natural fiber such as cotton, hemp, rayon or bamboo fabric.
Make sure your ties are very tight and apply your dye slowly. If you are very concerned with bleeding over into another area- use smaller dye applicators like (oral) syringes or even eye droppers. The twine I use is artificial sinew- which is a bit waxy- so dye doesn't soak into it. HTH!
Love your credo!
what types of paints are used to make tie dye?
also say I want to cut up my shirt, should I dye it frist and then cut or cut then dye to not waste dye?
Dye first then cut defiantly.
How do you get the curved line to look like that once you dye it??
By dyeing each side of the main fold a different color and the tie creates the separation. I have another video showing how to dye one if you think it might be of help to you.
lilgamoma that would be amazing
lilgamoma thank you!!
I ones on you Etsy page and I couldn't find that shirt! Is it already sold?
Long gone~ but I do take custom orders through my shop.
Can you send me the link?
Links are in my profile and video or you can google J Tribe Creations. :)
I'm trying to do the a accordion fold for the curved line and it's not turning out as a straight line!:( this is really stressing me out
Do you tie the circles with the front and back?
yes so design shows on both sides.
How do you make your colors so like explosive, like what do you do to make them pop out? My shirts keep fading and I hate it.
Memories
Do you unstich the circles afterwards?
Yes remove all the materials you used to tie with.
When your applying the die how do you make sure that the die on the circles doesn't just flow over the twine and into the bigger section?... (I think that makes sense.)
What can i use instead of 'Soda Ash'?
I'm from England and have know idea what it is... Can I use something like salt or Bicarbonate Soda?
Connor A' Court Sodium carbonate, it can usually be found from swimming pool supplies (used to raise PH in water) and sometimes hardware stores if your dye source does not carry it (which would be odd).
All dyes I've seen instruct to make the measurements 2/5 dye to table salt.

Connor, there are some great recipes online for how to make soda ash. It's essentially baking soda baked in the oven over a period of 30 to 40 minutes. Google "how to make soda ash".
Do you have to stitch the smaller circles?
No, you can fold the circle but stitching creates a more perfect circle & less chance of ovals. :)
Waow that's perfect job keep it up pls I will try it at home but I need you to teach me well how to soak it I mean everything cause I want to be creative and talented like you
There is a second video(link in description) on how to dye this tie. :)
If you don't tie the circles then they won't show up? Because I want to make a double-sided shirt like the design you made.
One side gets blue (flip to back & apply green) the opposite side was red then flip side orange.
Yes, you stitch through both sides.
Great video.
super cute!!!!
Mine came out awesome
Sure you can- check me out at J Tribe Creations and there is a link in the description of the video. I do customs. I just make these videos for fellow dyers to learn from.
Thank you! I'm going to try it out.
Amazing
Thanks
what kind of string did you use to tie the shirt?
Sinew
That is so awesome but i wouldnt be able to do it :(
very cool! thanks!!
Hey Rhonda j @3:50 how or what type of dye is that design called. My little sister and I would like to learn how to make that one if you could inbox me please. Thanks :)
Have you ever tried this with a blanket? That is what I would like to do.
I've done it on tapestries and curtains- as long as the fabric is dye-able such as cotton, rayon, hemp, etc I'd say give it a try! :)
