Schweitzer was my hero in junior high. I sent him a letter and he actually sent me a short reply! I still have the letter and have read his biography of Bach. I also read 'In Quest of the Historical Jesus' and had to but a Latin dictionary to read the footnotes and quotes! A true master and that rarity of rarities, a selfless human being. The world could use more like him!
Albert Schweitzer is the first generation of RUclipsrs who discovered that putting cats in their videos can give their viewership a considerable amount of boost.
Not only was he a great Organist but a great Humanitarian, preacher and Doctor. Not many classically trained musicians would leave a concert playing career to go to a third world country in Africa to become a missionary doctor, and not have access to the great European organs he was a master in playing. I have actually become fascinated with the idea of a feature film from an African point of view of his work in Africa, but intertwined with his organ music.
Dr. Schweitzer’s two volume biography of Bach shoulder be included in any good music curriculum. His Philosophy of Civilization should be studied as should be his reverence for life and his search for the historical Jesus.
I have your answer. I know it's a long time after your comment was posted, but since I just found this video I couldn't any sooner :) It's the beginning of Bach's Prelude and Fugue in B minor, BWV 544. Hope that helps.
Aber Schweitzer is also my hero.. but for nowadays sensitivity he is a little bit rude to the cat, isn't´he? :-) or are we today falsely sensitive and cats don't like us loving them and caring for them as is they were babys....?
Yes, he could have been a bit gentler with the cat. A young female if I'm not mistaken and a very pretty cat. My cats have, at least partially, ruled my life for the last thirty five years. I wouldn't change that for the world
Schweitzer had his flaws, like everybody else. (He was tough with his staff, too!) For further details, read the book "In Africa With Schweitzer", by Dr. Edgar Berman, who spent 1 yr working with Schweitzer: www.amazon.com/Africa-Schweitzer-Remarkable-Memoir-Surgeon/dp/0882823442
@@lyudmila2882 Well then don't have a cat and leave your lunch available. To me the cat is more important than the music. You can always play the music but the cat's moment is here, now and you can't get it back. I took two tiny little black insects out of the bath this morning before turning on the hot tap. They had just as much right to live as I do
It's amazing how you rush to criticize a person's sensitivity for an impulsive gesture! Of course, also insist that you never get irritated with people and animals, because you are perfect! This man lived in the most severe conditions, when he could live as a very rich man, just to help poor people. He also helped many animals, he also took care of them. You only have to learn from such a man about empathy.
The great man remains great man...but the obvious staging of this affair is kind of off-putting for me - down to the details of his crude and primitive living conditions. The camera - just by chance - caught a glimpse of the fly on the page....hmmmm
This is an excerpt from the Academy Award winning (Best Documentary) film "Albert Schweitzer", filmed by Erica Andersen. She related the extreme difficulty in filming, as the film would often disintegrate due to the heat and humidity in the Belgian Congo. Really I don't see any "staging" here! He's just playing the piano...
Oh but it is so obvious that the fly is a trained circus fly or maybe even a robot! It is also obvious that Schweitzer knows there is a camera there --and couldn't care less.
Ah yes - I have the documentary on my Young Indiana Jones collection along with another 100+ bw awesome features and this weekend will finish Indiana Jones & The Staff Of Kings PS2 (in reference to Moses and the staff that parted the seas) and will also finish my Franz Schubert recital of Dark Ballet. Now the world is an evil place - correct, and this is based on governments, yes - God's love is unconditional to those that ask for forgiveness - correct but why our sins are significant as to what is right and wrong then the sins of the government that put people into such situations as to what molestation is then we are all abused children based on the laws of commerce as to which men are deemed fit for work and marriage while retired people are continuously harassed to give to charities like Great Ormand Street Hospital - why not just kill the people you've decided must live underclass / black listed lives? +beatnikjd Hi, that's wonderful! I was just wonderful how old you are, since Albert Schweitzer died in 1965!
@@lafidala.1726 He'd be in his late 60's probably. So what?
@@paracelsusify wow, i commented this 3 years ago after i watched the video for a school project. I was merely interested.
@@lafidala.1726 Ok, cool. Wow too. How old were you?
@@paracelsusify Well, since you did the math on the last one you should be able to figure it out yourself, no? ;)
The world could use more people like this man. He inspires me.
Schweitzer died in 1960, and Mother Teresa died in 1997. Since then, no one...
Damn straight Owen

To say he was a genius is almost an understatement.
There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats.
