I'm much more creative in the privacy of my room. Jamming is fun, but I don't write songs that way.
I sit down and put riffs together and program drums, then present a full song to my bandmates and tell them they can tear it apart and change just about anything. I supply the foundation/blueprint and try to accept everyone's input as long as we all agree.

Great advice. I'm thinking of starting an indie/experimental band in community college next year called "TAS 3000" inspired by TAS 1000 and They Might be Giants. We would be musicially diverse and be fluent in various genres and styles.

im 14 lol and came up with a song idea. i only had a couple lyrics and then a friend came along and said she would play piano to go with it cus i had a sort of idea how to play but i am not the best. then another friend she would help with back up singing if thats what you would call it. then someone came to me and said that drums would be good with that. well i now have a band of 5 people but were strugling to make it all fit together. we have someone who can play keyboard, someone for drums, someone who is learning base guitar and then 2 singers but we are still looking for someone to play eletric guitar. its very stressful but also fun.

@@izaiahbauer1781 nice. i play piano and acoustic fluently, and am transfering my skills from acoustic to electric now instead of looking for someone. i used to play some woodwinds as a young kid and im learning bass to help a friend out and i play a little of the drums but to be honest they are one of the easiest instruments to pick up if you have good rhythm and coordination. i can sing lower key but im not the best. im not completely useless lol. and for ur info i come from the uk

Hey, you said that you had a job so you could afford to buy a computer.
That means that you didn't make money on music it was more like a hobby, am i right?
If I am right i have 2 questions, I'm only 15yrs old and just started learning how to play guitar, I've never studied music, I don't know notes, i am just learning chords and trying to play my favorite songs, so question number one is "should i go to music school or should i keep learning it myself?" Question number two is "should i keep it as a hobby or give 100% of myself to music".
Btw I've never followed your channel but after watching this video i can see that you are very experienced so i just need some advice, because i am writing a lot of songs and i have the tunes in my head but i am not that good guitar, my singing is not bad, but again I've never studied music professionally.

Hey so if your learning how the instrument works then you need to just practice, however tedious it may seem, knowing your instrument will help you make the best of your songwriting. Personally I'm not the best on the technicality of the guitar but I've learned how the instrument works in a lot of ways like understanding patterns through the CAGED system(plenty of videos on RUclips) and just finding things on my own that I enjoy. Don't get overwhelmed with whether you should go to school for it, like my group is now thinking of starting a band even though we're going off to college(not going to school for music). But what I'm trying to say in a round about way is just enjoy the music, find what makes you love it, be realistic about your opportunities, and if there is any take them. Also find some people to jam with, it will make learning to play a instrument a lot better an funner and you learn from other's who have gone through or are going through the same situation, and this allows you just a place to just mess up(don't be afraid to mess up, "every master was a novice at one point"). But yea just enjoy it man and practice lol.

Hey! Sorry for never replying to this, I quit making videos a while ago and hardly ever read comments anymore. At your age, I was fully dedicated to music. I was in several bands, learned any instrument I could get my hands on and wrote all the time. It really paid off in the long term. If you can do the same, I recommend it! Once you hit your mid 20s, life kind of sets in and you may have to decide whether or not you want to make a living out of this or not. There are hundreds of things unique to your situation that will come into play when making that decisionc, though. Luck, location, contacts, talent, etc. Making a living strictly by playing or writing music never really worked out for me, so I had to get a “day job”, but I never stopped playing, learning, writing, etc. Some pro musicians have a day job to pay the bills. Some people have a day job and then play music on the side for extra cash. There’s no cookie-cutter formula. There are so many options and job opportunities out there that are somewhat connected to music and audio that I think perfecting that art and immersing yourself in those things as much as you can, while you can, can only help you in the future! I did that and it helps me in my job as a sound designer. My brother did the same and it helps him in his job as an audio engineer. We both are still and will always be musicians no matter what!

@@PatFlanigan Thanks for the reply even though you don't make videos anymore, i appreciate it so much. Well i made a pact with myself that no matter what I'll keep playing, learning and writing even if music is not my priority in terms of money.
