Thanks for watching!
the fact that there is a 6 speed option is beautiful
You got that right!
i never knew they made newer tacomas in m until i got in one at work one day. Was pretty shocked but its so nice
Ikr!!! I was so sure they'd kill it off after the current gen but the fact that they kept it is just awesome ❤ thank you toyota!!! ❤
@@FrozenThrone7998yes. You can’t handle an 8 speed automatic.
Hopefully people buy it or else they will axe it in couple of years.
I would’ve sworn this next gen wouldn’t have a manual. Big kudos to Toyota for keeping it. Respect.
Does Toyota let you get the manual with the TRD Pro trim?
Yes @@hochhaul
@@benolson2692Stop posting ignorant nonsense.
@@hochhaulIt's been stated for a number of months that, no it doesn't because it's hybrid only. Only SR, non-PRO TRD trims in 4WD come with manual standard for 4 door cabs.
@nwezetx1 Maybe you should check the toyota build configurator, before you talk about things you know nothing about.
it says a lot that not only are they letting reviewers test drive (and film) pre production units but also that they even include the 6spd. i'm sure the cost of having the manual available isn't gigantic for toyota, but it's definitely a price many manufacturers would choose to save the money on instead.
They make enough margins on their trucks to afford it
After the massive margins on the last truck and the current massive margins on the 4Runner I’m sure they can afford it. Couldn’t afford a front locker though
@@ItsNotAProblemthe other manufacturers can afford it too, yet don’t provide it?
@@OmarZ77Other manufacturers aren't GOATs like Toyota and Lexus
@@ItsNotAProblemI think they also sell a few of these manuals (in different trucks) to make it profitable
Manual transmission , take my money
Oh, they will. And lots of it.
You’ll get a lot of money back though if you want to trade or sell. The top resale value usually flip flops between the Tacoma or Wrangler. Anyone who likes a Tacoma will most likely stay away from a Wrangler too and vice versa!
When the engine is in the shop within a year let me know what the repair costs are
@@rockerdriver Does resale value apply to turbo though?
@@firefly9838I’ll take that turbo 4 any day over that POS 3.5 in the 3rd gen. I had one for 18 months and got rid of it, it was so underpowered (and that was the 6MT).
I love how Toyota is keeping the manual alive! Although I do wish that they got better MPG but still, a beautiful interior, better ride quality, 6 speed manual, good sound system. I think Toyota killed it with the new generation Tacoma. My grandfather had a 2008 TRD Tacoma with a 5 Speed and it was a blast to drive.
2008 TRD model Tacomas had a 6 speed
43k for a Tacoma, dang
@@JCourts2k23Not for me. I paid 40 for My 2017. And it’s LOADED. but withy 50K miles on it and me 68, I’ll drive this one to my grave. I had a 95 that I drove up and down from Giant Forest (15 miles one Vertical) for 22 years. Never used a DROP of oil. That truck is still making wine at the Coast. I got 22 mpg in that one and styill get 22 in my ‘17.
@@MarcusRefusiuswhat do you mean its loaded? I'm planning on getting a manual Tacoma. Instead of a 4runner. I just love the manual so much
@@joshuajay2886loaded means it has most options or all options..
So cool that Toyota brought a manual. No other company is doing that anymore.
What about Tesla?
Ford is, I've got a manual 2023 Bronco, it is amazing, but I kind of want a truck hence why I am watching this video :D
@@davidr.wilson8194 yeah Tesla makes the Best manual trans.
Jeep gladiator still has a manual I think, unless it got discontinued
Mazda
Can we shame that 911 for crossing double yellows while going 35 on a straight 💀
@legopieface Absolutely, that was embarrassing to watch. Sad to see a 911 driven by someone like that.
911 was clearly admiring in his rearview trying to figure out his trade-in options....
It's pretty funny to go out of their way to drive on a curvy road just to straight line the corners as much as they can
That guy's a nerd
alcohol will do that to you
It’s nice to know Toyota is actually trying to keep manuals alive.
Barely... besides the GR, Corollas no long have manuals.
The Tacoma had a good run, 1995-2023 RIP
This is the happiest I’ve ever been watching a review
Toyota still considers manual transmission lovers. @toyota huge respect toyota and technical team behind this fantastic truck 🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽
I'm all of a sudden now looking to downsize our camping trailer so a TRD offroad manual could be our new tow vehicle. Thanks for taking us along on the drive!
Be careful, I saw another review that claimed the manual lowered tow rating numbers to like 4000 lbs. Not sure if maybe it was a gearing issue with that specific truck or not, but wanted to give you a heads up.
For long term towing I really don't think that this truck would be good. You might as well spend an extra $10k on a truck with a V8 and a little beefier suspension. Depending on the size of your camping trailer of course it might be fine, but I wouldn't want to constantly be pulling something with a 4 banger and manual tranny.
@@usa_dobson8967 Yes, I totally get it. I was just excited for the new truck still being made with a manual and dreaming of having a fun truck as a daily and part time tow vehicle, but the specs don't really pan out. We don't tow that often but still need to have a 1/2 ton to tow our current camper. So was just dreaming away.
@@modmatt1I saw another video on RUclips by The fast car lane about the manual Tacoma towing 5,000 lb. And he talked about how it did you should check it out. I believe the tow rating is 6500 or 6,000 with a manual
When you said no rev hang…I officially fell for this truck.
My ‘14 manual can serve lunch between first and second…
AND I LOVE IT STILL
fell for 50k llol
Toyota sure has a thing about making the big screen look like it's an afterthought in the design process, the way it sticks up above the dash blocking sightlines.
Really ruins the interior doesn't it, I wonder if I can remove it😃
Get over it. This has been a trend since 2010/11 with the BMW 6-Series and you people just won't let it go.
It's because integrated screen housings raise dashboard height and having screens independent of the dash, frees up designers in terms of dash sight lines and allows for a larger windshield glass area.
Actually my wife chose the Lexus TX over the Grand Highlander for the sole reason the screen isn’t blocking her view!
just seeing the shift knob shake around at the beginning when the truck started up was enough to convince me that this thing was gonna be a blast lol
Its actually poor design. I read a quote from a Toyota engineer stating that the reason the redline rpm is so low is to eliminate NVH issues. so apparently it used to shake even harder.
@@huntersowers7404 wow really? Figured they'd put a bit more effort with balance shafts or something
my 2022 Hilux does this. i really like it.
Unlike some stuff that has came and gone and come back that should never come back... I am loving seeing manuals resurging!
They’re not resurging. Toyota just hasn’t gotten rid of them yet
A manual pickup? In 2023? Now that's awesome!
I hate the 4 banger with turbo but man seeing that manual makes me want one.
Chris, you are the GOAT of POV test drive reviews. Thank you for all that you do!
Not that we should be speeding. But anyone driving in a Porche on that type of road, should have a little more pace and a bit more responsible LOL.
Going over double yellow's and going around 35 mph is unacceptable 😂
More money than skill
Almost certainly some old boomer dude that just wants to look cool. Same guys driving corvettes with their new balance sneakers.
The manual is slowly dying and i love that Toyota is keeping it
Thank you for this, Chris! The most anticipated video of 2023! At least for me. My most anticipated one for next year is 2025 4Runner manual next year. Looking forward to it!
That’s the rumour
Unfortunately and realistically it will not offer manual
@@luiscouto6543 I suspected that too. Still hopeful. If Tacoma MT sales increase, it would be easy to integrate it with 4Runner because of the same platform. But, like you, I suspect that it’s not likely to happen. They may even do an independent rear suspension instead of a live axle, like in Nissan Armadas/QX56s.
@@luiscouto6543 Everyone (including myself) said the Tacoma MT was dead and they wouldn't bother bringing it back for this new gen, but they did it! So I remain hopeful that they can also bring it to the 4Runner since it is on the same platform.
I wonder if the 4runner will be more off-road focused considering they brought the Landcruiser Prado here.
More companies need to listen up. Giving people options with manual cars and not having everything be electric. This is great!
Oh great, the mid size 4 cylinder gets the exact same mpg as my full size Ford V8, with twice the room, twice the towing, twice the payload and 50% more power. Good job Toyota!
Yeah, it really doesn’t make sense. Even the f150 v6 powerboost gets like 26mpg combined.
19/23 for the new turbo four is disappointing.
Yeah, but your full size will never be a midsize.
@@oldv1288Imo the only advantage to midsized was better mpg and better turn radius and size for trails. The mpg was hidden for some time and I had much higher expectations.
@___Karma__ Yeah you're right. If we were to drive this thing around town everyday the mileage would be ok. But, being an avid offroader myself I think this little engine will be a fuel sipper on slow trails/offroading.
@@oldv1288 I hope so too, only time will tell. Plus tire size/lift and tune can make or break a proper build. Really, most people don't need more than 33s with a 2-3 inch lift to get more performance without cutting too much into mpg and regearing.
That 2nd gen Tacoma was really carving up those corners. 🤣
2 nd gen left him in the dust bro
Beautiful love that fact that in a 2024 Tacoma they still have Manuel only Toyota does this ❤
YAAAASSSSSSS THE ONE I WANT!! TRD SPORT WITH THE MANUAL!!!!
I pulled the trigger on my 2019 trd pro with 6mt after watching your video driving the 3rd gen manual. Definitely one of the best vehicle choices I've made. Might turn it in for a 4th gen in a few years.
are you leasing the 2019?
No. Bought it in the fall of 2019. Really fortunate time to buy a 19 as the 20's rolled onto lots. Before the plague, etc.
YES!!! Finally, a car/truck with a Manual Transmission! I am an interested buyer!
TheTopher makes the best videos ever 😊
Wow. Love the manual. Honestly if I'm going to get or recommend a pickup this is it.
Gosh i sounds like a freaking diesel, and has RPM range of one too!!!
It does 😂
The automatic has a 1k rpm higher redline. Why, I have no idea.
Just bought a 6 speed manual 2012 Mazda3. I'm glad Toyota is continuing manuals.
Best manual review I’ve seen! 🍻
"I don't know that it's the transmission I would choose, but I'm glad it exists." This is a pretty common sentiment in the U.S., I think. Everyone wants there to be a manual option, but not enough people actually want to buy one. Then people get angry at manufacturers for discontinuing what they romanticize but don't purchase. Looks like a great truck, though!
what a sexy wobbling shift rod
2.4 Turbo and a 6 Speed? I smell more sports cars coming
Twin turbo sport tacoma❤
Love this new tacoma!! 🥰🥰
Its really sad you're forced to buy these vehicles from scalperships. Should be able to buy directly from the manufacturer and get away from the antiquated stealerships model.
If everyone were to stop buying from stealerships, manufacturers would have no other choice than for us to buy it from them directly
Persuade your state lawmakers to change the franchise laws and that could happen. You could order a vehicle directly from the dealer if it’s an open.
Manuals are jus some goated cars 🔥
Toyota, if you're listening... I am ordering this vehicle BECAUSE you kept the manual in it. Otherwise I would be going with a Bronco. THANK YOU!
You know as I was listening to this one thing I noticed was no rattles at all and it was a pre production. These car companies seem to really be increasing their production tolerances. I have watched videos on the Chevy Colorado and they have made a point to say how well it’s put together.
Really wish this current gen of 4runner had a manual option. They've been on this gen for 13 years, it could've been done.
Bronco manual option I hope 4runner too.
This might be theee Tacome to get. Thanks for pushing it to its limits on the canyon, Topher!
I bought the 2023 3rd Gen because they said there wouldn't be a Manual for the 2024 4th Gen. Wow !!!! Didn't know they changed their minds
“Nothing is as fast as Tacoma work truck on a back road.” Preach brother
When I was young, just about every car I owned was a standard. Because they were fun and I could always buy a manual trans car much cheaper than an equally equipped automatic. Plus, back then, a good 5-speed manual far outperformed most automatics of the day. So when I saw this vid pop up of you driving a manual, I immediately clicked to check it out. Nostalgia being what it is, I immediately wanted one, but then I kept watching and watching. And just watching you shift made me tired. Don't get me wrong, I would absolutely LOVE that truck 3 or 4 days a month. But everyday? Nah, I'm done with shifting steady. Most days I want a relaxing drive and a coffee. I'm afraid my shifting days are over.
Cheers.
This guy isn't a very good manual driver. Could use some practice.
Now this is the one I was waiting for.
Great to see a manual but a bummer it’s saddled to a lower output motor compared to the auto.
Bro hustling the Tacoma like it's a GR COROLLA
We need a GR Tacoma
@@DragonKnightX12 there's a GR Hilux in Japan
Alright alright, i drive my tacoma for work and i think he’s right about us driving them like a sports car on back roads. I don’t think I realized i do it. It’s the only place a truck can feel quick! Especially with a 5 speed (like my 2000) or a 6 speed, you can keep the RPMs up and it’ll feel nice n peppy.
I like mostly everything about it, except the 4 cylinder turbo gas motor. They need to bring it to the US with the most powerful, reliable, and hopefully fuel efficient turbo diesel that they can, while maintaining a 6-speed manual option with part-time 4wd (full time rwd). I think it would do really well. This is something I would aspire to get, and unfortunately, the options just aren't here anymore. Though, unfortunately, these days something like that would be silly expensive. However, that's the only model I'd probably consider. I'll also add a regular cab to that wants list.
I would be one of the first ones to buy that.
The company I work for has some 7th generation Toyota Hilux 3.0TD 5 speed manual transmission and some 8th generation Toyota Hilux 2.8TDI 6speed manual transmission. Both engine are amazing, they have a lot of torque at low revolution, good fuel efficiency, and last forever. Toyota should offers that engine on Tacoma and 4runner.
@@davidblaiotta That's awesome!
That motor is trouble.
The Turbo Inline-4 gas motor? If so, I could definitely see it. Forced induction on a smaller gas motor in a pickup sounds like it could tarnish Toyota's bulletproof reliability reputation.
@@MarkTurner-vs7uc
This Toyota seems diluted. They’re fading away from what they were know for in my eyes. My step father had the previous generation TRD in orange and I absolutely loved that truck. He put like 180k on it since 2017. Stout pickup. Don’t see this truck working out the same way. Would have personally ditched the sunroof, nobody uses them. This guy is driving that thing like I drove my 6spd 370z on turns. Nowhere in the game does anybody need a pickup with handling capabilities. I get it, times are changing. Toyota wasn’t supposed to. Thanks for the video and may Almighty God bless you!
Thanks for taking us along on the drive. Very excited about the manual.
Love my 2013 trd off road Tacoma manual. So glad to see there keeping it on the new gen.
Owned a first gen Tacoma extracab with a 5 speed manual for 14 years. Looks like I’ll be getting a new Tacoma.
I daily the model and spec shown in the video. It was almost 20k out the door more than the 40something mentioned. Worth every cent.
Toyota needs to do a manual 4x4 2 door xtracab with 6ft bed !!
Something about seeing a manual with a modern dash
Liking that its available with a manual on base model. Hoping the manual can tow the full amount. This may have to be my next vehicle and I said I was done with manuals for a DD!
I love how short the gearing is in the manual. Adds to the fun factor.
it was so satisfying watching you drive this truck. ❤
Bug 🐛 me , he can’t shift for beans 🫘,,, I would yank him out , and say I’ll drive thanks !!! He terrible 😊
Toyota has mastered 4 cylinder so I'm not surprised that thing sounds beautiful
This makes me hopeful that the next gen 4Runner will have the 6MT
You and me both, buddy!
But it'll probably be a 4 banger...
I hate these big LCD screen or whatever you call the thing! Every damn vehicle has them too! It wouldn’t be so bad if it was mounted lower and out of the way of blocking your vision.
My (realistic) dream garage is now this new Tacoma in manual and an ND2 Miata (also in manual of course).
So glad the manual is back.
I love manuals, everytime I go to Toyota dealerships I ask if they have any manuals in stock, they always look at me shocked. I guess cause they don't expect a girl to know how to drive one😂
I’ve mostly driven manuals until recently, due to a double set of unfortunate circumstances (blown up engine of a 6spd Jeep Cherokee, then followed by stolen truck). My wonderful fiancé decided to buy me a brand new Tacoma, and I saw that they came in manual. But the sales rep said that the likelihood we’d ever see one is extremely low! I’m so grateful for my wheels and what my man is doing for me, but I do wish we could have made the manual happen. I just love the feel of the road with a manual, I have more control, and frankly all the cruise control functions seem a bit of a headache. Hopefully in the future they keep making them!
This is dream truck material
The new Tacoma looks amazing! It looks like they’ve solved the main niggles that we have with our 2017. Cramped cabin, rougher suspension, seats that aren’t great for long drives, dated tech and an engine that underwhelms a bit climbing the Rockies out of Denver. The trouble is our truck at close to 80k is still bullet proof. I don’t think I can talk myself into upgrading just yet. Can’t wait to hear about the hybrid models. Great review.
thank you for teaching me a new word
That's the same shifter they use here in Toyota's Indian products: Innova crysta and fortuner. It's funny to see that it even has the same start-up wobble too 😂
Id still have a diesel hilux/fortuner over this, you guys are lucky over there
I wanted to buy one of these and waited for them to come out. Now seeing there’s a manual transmission. IM SOLD
i literally got jumscared when i saw the shifter in the thumbnail and it made my heart rate go up
I have a 3rd gen manual taco trd sport that I love and hope lasts me FOREVER! Long live teh manuals!I!I!I!I!I!I!I!1111111
Now that's what I'm talking about a 6 speed manual for real drivers to enjoy. Toyota you are tempting me now.
Definitely one of these trucks in my future.
anti theft mt is key
Just wish they had more power. The higher spec model with more HP is available in auto only, which makes sense.
@@ryanb8736it makes 8 less HP and 7 less LB ft, not going to be noticable than the non hybrid auto variant
With intercooler upgrade i see this around 360ish when tuned and still reliable I think that would be perfect in a truck this size
The last Nissan with a 4x4 Manual 4cyl in the US was back in 1998. This is a game changer.
Love the 6 speed. I own a 2017 Tundra , so only an auto for me, lol. If I were to downsize, I definitely would get a 6 speed manual Taco.
I had a Jeep eagle with 3 sp and small block V8 in 1976 and loved it.
3:53 just the thinnest metal for that hood 😅
Im glad the manuals are sticking around.
Same shift knob as a 3rd gen.
BOLD!
Manual transmission. What a beautiful thing.
6 speed❤ thats the only thing Ridgeline lack of
lol. That and a frame
Live and love manual transmission
2024 and we got a picj up truck with a 6speed manual. Life is good
The snow scoop down there gota go!
My 05 Tacoma 6 speed trd sport is fun to drive 240,000 miles mostly stock and it’s still runs like a champ!! Love it!!! Only down fall I’m pretty big feller and it’s a little tight in there
I have a 2006 Tacoma Auto. I love manual transmissions and am considering buying one. The only issue I see is that it is loud! Thank you for the video.
Yeah good see manuals as option. I hate that so many companies pushing auto ONLY BS.
Can’t even hear the turbo. I’d want beefer v6 or v6 diesel.
I can't believe they carried over the same shift knob from the 3rd gen. It is the worst shift knob ever. Also, the appearance of the entire truck is an improvement, besides the trim decal. I have a 23 with the V6 and the manual, and I can tell just by watching this video that the power delivery is much better.
Why are we forced to have small displacement turbo trucks? It doesn't even get better mpg than my 3.5 v6 trd sport
I’m looking for a new manual car but thanks to your video I might be sold on getting a truck instead.
If they bring the manual to the redesigned 4Runner it will be a hit
Others are saying that there is rev hang and it feels difficult to shift it quickly.
Honestly I kind of want one just great off road rainy days type truck
GREAT vid man...exactly the type of vid i was looking for!
I'm definitely excited that Toyota is keeping the manual. The only concern is that the manual is only available in the TRD trim, which is actually an upgrade. Unlike the old days, the manual is actually going to cost more. I also miss the naturally aspirated engines.
My 2019 TRD sport 6 speed is just wonderful.
