Actually you can see a dead popped boomer in the Left 4 Dead 1 cinematic trailer right at the beginning for a split second during that first lightning. The stuff Bill gets on his fingers is also boomer bile, and he also spreads some on Francis' vest and that's why I think those zombies run at them out of nowhere.
You are correct! Bill being a curious asshole is what almost got them killed in that cinematic.
