This version is performed in D major with scordatura in D ("solo tuning") which result in E major. For the modern double bass tuned in fourths, this edition (published by Hoffmeister) is technically much more natural solution than the strangely popular C major edition.
If the instrument is tuned between the "orchestra" and "solo" tuning, the result is E flat major, the original tonality of the piece. I prefer that option, but I had to play another pieces in the same concert (Bottesini) so we are finally in E major here.
It was a hard task to play this concert by 34,5°C / 94°F temperature and 72% humidity on the stage.

The acoustic is very similar to the 18° century because this kind of music was played in little théâtre of court of princes or city.That is to say the chose of place to record this music is perfect because the sound is very good .

'Vanhal' is obviously an exceptionally talented composer as he understands the instrument.
Just wonder how if Mozart had composed something for the instrument?
Actually Mozart did compose something for double bass: aria concertante "Per questa bella mano"

It is a cadenza I've composed when I was 20 years old. The cadenzas by Vaňhal don't exist. The composers have left the soloists to improvise their own cadenzas back then.
