Having some short matches sprinkled in is good, and ultimately important if the idea is to build towards the same two guys wrestling at a PPV. Yeah, Edge and Lance could have put on a 20min classic on some random RAW, but the point of that match wasn't to put over Edge or Lance, the match was just a vessel to facilitate the growing of the feud between Christian and Edge. And having a great, 20 min match end on a run-in by Christian would have been a disservice to the match and fans. You don't want fans clamoring for more Edge v Lance, when you're trying to sell PPV buys for Edge v Christian.
We didn't need long winded matches on Raw or Smackdown. We wanted actual verbal assaults on each other that made you want to pay for the PPV/PLE. The verbal jabs saved your body 3 weeks out of the month so you put it on the line when it counted.
I hate to correct Edge here, especially since he lived it and it was his job but this is not how I seen it at all. In fact it was quiet the opposite. Short Matches led to a product where you knew everyone on the roster and would cheer for them because you know you would see them every week and would become invested in their character. From the top of the food chain right down to the jobbers. Everyone had a chance and it was a time when even those jobbers would get big pops from the crowd. A lot can be said in a 2min match and was said week after week. Whether it was Kai and Tai segments, Eddie Guerrero's antics or it was Stone Cold coming out and Stunner'ing someone. There were many moments from the Attitude Era that made compelling storylines and some if not many of those segments were only a few minutes long but told a story we all remember to this day. Like someone else pointed out here, at leat back then you got a variety of matches and wrestlers in the 2hr program. Not like today where things drag on for so long it's boring and where finishers don't mean as much as the titles. Which is absolutely nothing and if I have to sit through another super kick I'll lose it. Even the titles meant something during the Attitude Era. I still remember the Hardcore Title belt when it went 24/7 and all the chaos that ensued was classic stuff...and guess what? It told a great story you wanted to tune in to watch.
Yet they have 30 minute matches today and can't tell a story? Since the Attitude Era, the longer the matches have become, the lower the ratings. All the casual fan wants is to be entertained, not to dissect who does the best Canadian Destroyer.

@@jonathan3240 your opinion became invalid when you said wrestling is trash now, you are blinded by nostalgia, this era is the best wrestling has been since the attitude era, you think promos being scripted is new??? All the rock's promos were scripted, he said so himself, you have no idea what you're talking about.
They saved the long matches for ppvs. The shows were entertaining and about selling the ppvs and the characters. People didn't chant fight forever and every raw was great. And oh yea, if you were wrestling lance storm it wasn't the attitude era.
They were still better and much more entertaining than whatever they spit out today.
That was him though
There were plenty of matches that were longer
3 minutes is a lot longer than I last…😐
Good thing about 3 min matches is they didint have time for an ad break mid match.
The Tag Team division and Mid Card should have been better, that helps the main event look better and more exciting to see during that time.
3 minutes of passion and action packed story telling is better then 11 minute lackluster botch filled matches.
I almost feel like Edge was paid to say this for some reason
its like some other company is just about to have short 5 minute matches on a show named "speed" ;-) ALSO THE ROCKS ATTITUDE ERA 2024
AEW is proving long matches that don’t mean anything doesn’t work.
Story > Matches
Well they balance it out now by having their intro sequence take 4 and a half minutes each.
Hopefully this new era will be a bit of both. The attitude era, but with good storylines and decent matches.
The short matches were made up by all the backstage brawls and supermarket fights and Ironman matches and whatever else Vince wanted to put on TV
Edge and Kurt Angle's sign promo was funny. I'm glad they brought that back later on.
Shows u how stacked the era was
We didn't need long winded matches on Raw or Smackdown.
“It was one minute, eight seconds” and that was all you needed. Long matches are boring for some of us.
Yet they have 30 minute matches today and can't tell a story? Since the Attitude Era, the longer the matches have become, the lower the ratings. Today's professional wrestlers have turned into marks and ruined the business because "artistic integrity" matters more than making money. If true go paint, write a book or become an actor. All the casual fan wants is to be entertained, not to dissect who does the best Canadian Destroyer.
Been saying this for years
LMAO his match was 1 minute and 8 seconds because he was a jobber then.lmao he was a nobody.. then all the top talent left and that's how edge got longer matches. LMAO
The story was outside the ring
Sometimes you can tell a story no asked for, such as Roman's title reign
Longer matches doesn't equal better
The stories and three minute matches were still far superior to what he's doing over in the bush league in 2024.
I wouldather watch a 108 squash than two men hug each other and lying on the floor for 45 minutes
They did so much damage to their bodies during the attitude era. When I was a kid I thought that shit was normal.
Yeah a few matches were under 5 minutes. . . BUT SOMETIMES the entrances were the best part of the match anyways. . .
The walkouts alone were better than most matches today.
I think you just dislike wrestling
@@thenationofdefecation7969 Nah the wrestling is the only part I care about that's why I like AJPW and NJPW, FMW, and Noah I just hate a lot of modern wrestling because it's a high spot choreography fest instead of a sanctioned "boxing" match. When it takes you 5 seconds to setup a move where it's obvious you're collaborating with your opponent you've lost me.
now we get 3 minute chop exchanges
Some of aew matches is a little too long.
It was still THE BEST.
I taught Edge to never go over 1 minute and 8 seconds in the Mecca MSG brother
Yeah brother!
I also liked how HBK Shawn Michaels was overselling your moves in the 2000s brother!😂
@@MrLove717 yeah that was my idea brother to add a little drama. I spent 3 hours going over the psychology with Genghis Kahn and Joseph Stalin before the match then flew 373 hours from Tibet to make it to the match dude. Only the best for all my little hulkimaniacs brother.
@@HulksterNevaLies yeah 🤣🤣🤣I'm a hulkamaniac for life brother 🤘🤣🤣
As much as the attitude era was an awesome time. Yeah the matches I’m Raw and Smackdown were short most of the times (1-5 minute matches). It ended in a DQ, count out, no contest, or a job. Not saying every match needs to be 30 minutes each no of course not. But it did get annoying at times. But they made it up with good characters and story telling.
