Nope. Bochco can come up with show ideas, but he’s not a good writer. LA law wasn’t good until Kelley started writing for the show and went downhill once he left. Even the concept for Murder One, following one trial for a whole season, was something Kelley already did in season 5 of LA Law. Kelley delved far more into the weeds of the legal profession than Bochco ever did. Outside of Hill Street Blues and NYPD Blue, I can’t think of any good show Bochco is known for.

I don't know if this story is true or not. I suspect it is, because it's unlikely to be a story one would just make up.
In any case, the first series (and only the First Series of Murder One) is as fine a legal drama has ever appeared on television.
And IMHO the whole series just orbits around a fantastic performance of Daniel Benzali, ably supported by the disturbingly talented Stanley Tucci.
The First Series of Murder One instigated binge-watching before binge watching was even 'a thing'.

Steven Bochco was so smart and charming and this is a GREAT story. Benzali was clearly being extraordinarily UNPROFESSIONAL and uncooperative. He deserved to be fired as he was. But, but, but, the role of Ted Hoffman in Murder One was probably the best role that Benzali ever had in his ENTIRE CAREER. He was absolutely perfect for that role.
And the SAD part of this story is that season one of Murder One was sensational (with Benzali) and season two of Murder One without Benzali was merely tolerably OK -- absolutely not outstanding. Bochco was correct in firing Benzali (I guess) but Bochco badly failed in finding a suitable replacement EQUAL to or better than Benzali. And thus Murder One as a continuing series was doomed by Benzali's absence. A funny story with a sad ending.

That show, Murder One, started strong as memory serves. Then it slipped into all the foibles of 'Bochcoisms.' Too much atmosphere, sanctimony and soap opera. Just like Hill Street... RIP.

Murder One was one of the best tv shows ever. Season 2 sucked because Daniel Benzali was gone. Bocho should have just pushed the shooting schedule an hour later. Not a big deal. It would have been worth it to keep Benzali. This story sounds like bullshit anyway. Bocho blew it by replacing the guy who made the show great.

Benzali WAS the show, in my opinion. Ted Hoffman was one of my favorite characters EVER, played flawlessly by Daniel Benzali. Season 2 of Murder One (without Benzali) was unwatchable.

This isn't really a funny story and should have remained private. For Bochco to use this as an anecdote for an interview is really graceless. Bochco may have made some great shows but as a human being, he's really got no class.
