1 Megawatt is 1 million watts.
If a lightbulb is 100 watts, then 1MW can power 10,000 lightbulbs.
At an average of 20 lightbulbs per home, that's 500 homes powered by 1MW (excluding other power usages).
Eskom has a capacity of 50,000MW but is failing to even deliver 35,000MW.

I recall the brinkmanship during the cold war. The Soviet built nuclears in Cuba. They later had to dismantle these cuclears and move them elsewhere. Therefore, I should believe in SA the station and carriers were dismantledand stored somewhere. Its just a matter of assembli again in common course

Part way through the conversation(great pod as usual for the Black Pen), I think once the ANC's story has ran it's course. It's mismanagement of the talent in SA will be more damning than any overt criminal act. There's so much potential in SA, that is just wasted. There are Nikola Tesla's, Claude Shannon's and Richard Feynman's that will never see the inside of a university or if they do, take their talent's abroad. The mismanagement of the human capital, hai it's baffling

Hi Pen, great show for engineers today and for viewers to learn, to add I work in Pulp and Paper industry in the Boilers section, we use ( Black Liquour- byproduct when cooking pulp to make paper), we use that as fuel to fire up our boilers to create heat. It's called Recovery Boilers. So there's lots of alternatives fuels that most people are not aware of.

I'm in favor by the way of nuclear and think it gets a bad rap, but let's please be honest in how we contextualize these things and let them stand on their own merit without the subterfuge

    Awesome work, Penuel!
This is a discussion that African leaders and people need to have. We (Africa) need as much energy as possible for our development, and the consequences of delays will be unforgivable when the inevitable arrives.
There are so many misunderstandings, deliberate or otherwise, about energy and climate change. We need to be correctly informed about the available technologies and their impacts to enable us to make the right decisions.
I encourage young African and leaders to read a couple of very interesting and informative books I recently read.
Apocalypse Never - Why Environmental Alarmism Hurts Us All - by Michael Shellenberger
    2 books by Bjorn Lomborg
    1. False Alarm - How Climate Change Panic Cost Us Trillions, Hurts The Poor, And Fails to Fix The Planet.
    2. Best Things First - The 12 mist efficient solutions for the world's poorest and our global SDG promises.

Penuel, I think you should facilitate a conversation with "experts" of differing perspectives on how SA should address it's energy insecurity. I for one think that this idea that an attack on coal is an attack on development is flawed. The fact is, we ought to pursue technologies that result in the lowest cost method of development. This includes the cost of energy but also the cost to society of pursuing any particular energy source. For example, the cost of coal to the country is enormous. While it may be touted as "cheap", it's not actually because it causes large health risks that end up burdening our healthcare system with unnecessary excesses in respiratory illnesses suffered by the poor. If you don't believe me, just check Mpumalanga's air.

Energy storage technologies such as batteries and supercapacitors are built or developed using materials/minerals mined here, iron oxide in Northern Cape by Kumba Iron ore Mining company, Vanadium oxide in Mpumalanga by Vanchem, Lithium in Zimbabwe, Cobalt oxide in DRC, graphene material using any carbon materials such as plants, coal, petroleum resources. To be able to build these technologies, you require a knowledge of the study of Chemistry and science. They are many other oxide metals and transition metals found here and anywhere in the world we can use to build our own batteries in order to be full participants in this wave. Problem is that we are too obsessed with mediocre politics than real ones. Remember President Xi Jinping is a chemical engineer by profession and Chinese Communist party is led by people with merits rather than dull people. They invest in innovation which is the basis of industrial development and the engine of modern economy.
