  • 🍂 Harvesting Spring's Delight: Takenoko Bamboo Shoots in Japan
Amid the vibrant landscapes of Japan lies a springtime secret. Every early season, the ground reveals the ‘children of bamboo’ or "takenoko". This video unveils the intricate art of harvesting these young bamboo delights.
Accompany Kurt Bell on a journey through Japan's time-honored tradition of collecting takenoko. Learn to spot the tender green shoots as they peek through the earth and understand the precise moment for harvest. Those grown beyond a few centimeters often remain untouched.
Dive into the culinary world of Japan where takenoko graces many dishes, symbolizing the refreshing onset of spring.
Kurt Bell, a passionate explorer and devoted family man, dives deep into life's mysteries and the world's wonders. Born in 1964, his American roots and boundless curiosity have led him on both physical and philosophical adventures. Through works like "Going Alone" and "No More Looking Out For Number One", he captures his unique insights, driven by a stoic heart and a skeptic's mind. To Kurt, life may lack inherent meaning, but every moment brims with purpose.

Your videos are always inspirational. I've visited many places and seem to have walked most of my native Wales and England, but your videos always make me want to spend a great deal of time in Japan. Thanks.

great video - very well tended bamboo grove by the look of it. With the rain we've had this summer, next spring could be a bumper harvest - found my first one yesterday...Good luck.

I read somewhere that that bamboo shoots feature in woodblock prints so frequently due to its use in everyday life that it is essential for day life.. I really didnt know that it would be used for tempura.

This is great. I love collecting wild foods.
I was wondering how deep they are going. Do you hit the main root and thats when you split it off?

I just watched some other guys video on shoots and it wasn't as good as this. Im in the process of growing bamboo now and was very curious on this aspect of what bamboo has to offer.Cant wait for it all to take off!!!

if anyone is wondering, they ARE bitter and you have to cook them because of a certain chemical on them. Cyanide I believe, but I'm not really sure haha. Anyways, if you look online your bound to find ways to cook them.
