They eventually add machine guns in crisis zone, time crisis 2 (ps2) and then it's standard in time crisis 3 and onwards. VSSE should really give it's agents better weapons lol.
The Machine guns you use in Time Crisis 2 are just commandeered off fallen enemy soldiers, rather than the agents being deployed with them as standard issue like they are in Time Crisis 3. In Crisis Zone, you play as the STF rather than the VSSE, by the way. The STF may or may not be inspired by the real life SAS...

I wonder just how many bullets it takes to down one helicopter. When I was a kid I once saw a pro did it legit on a cabinet, so I know it definitely can be done. But when I tried it, the heli just took off before I could dump the third mag on it.
It's just using two cheats in MAME: Infinite Ammo and Autofire. Obviously you cannot make the protagonist actually hold an AK in game, but you can make his weapon have the stats of one.
"Type 1" AK47s are relatively rare, yes, but I think there are still a couple dozens of thousands of them around. All other models of AK are extremely common, though. The AK is literally the most common firearm in existence.

One is a standard issue rifle for general use by infantrymen, the other is a fancy expensive handgun with a dash of usefulness as a sidearm for big game hunting or silhouette target shooting. Military videogames and action films often put these two together in the same context but that's in no way realistic.

The VSSE are meant to do things as quickly as possible, so it's best for them to carry pistols instead of huge guns.
