  • The U.S. Navy film “Smart Boy” encouraged World War II sailors to be just that - especially when it comes to enjoying shore leave. The film opens with a group of sailors in their off hours as they get ready to go ashore for liberty (or time off) in their enlisted dress blue uniforms. At mark 03:47, one of the sailors decides to swipe campaign ribbons from a sick crewmate’s jumper. The sailor’s misbehavior continues in town, disrespecting civilians and a junior officer. “The navy goes in for courtesy. Like saluting. It’s an order to an admiral the same as you,” his friend cautions him at mark 05:20. The sailor’s disrespect carries over to women, too. When set up on a blind date, he remarks of his shipmate’s girl at mark 06:45: “She’s not bad but I bet her girlfriend’s a dog - they always are.” Opting instead to spend time with “some broken down floozies,” the sailor adds additional campaign ribbons to his uniform and hits an array of watering holes, pounding down shots and beers in a drinking montage until he enters another drinking establishment at mark 09:00 and begins flashing his seven months of pay - a site that catches the eye of the bartender.
With a wink and a nod, he sends a well-dressed B-girl toward her mark and encourages him to buy her some drinks. “I thought you were a friend of mine. From the back you look just like him. He’s very well built, too,” she purrs. “I can say the same for you,” he replies as his eyes wander. The drinks and the flirting continues as the sailor relates a wild story of an invasion at mark 10:50 - one he only read about in a magazine. As his stories grow and his speech slurs by mark 11:05, he delights a growing crowd with more tall tales and high-priced drink purchases.
The morality tale starts at mark 11:45, when the blonde B-girl goes in for the kill … and lifts a wad of cash from the drunken sailor’s belt, passing off the cash to her bartender partner before he cuts him off and kicks him out. Stumbling out into the daylight at mark 13:30, he suggests they go up to her place. “What do you mean? If you think I’m some kind of round-heel tramp you’ve got another thing coming,” she snaps before storming off.
He returns to the diner where he left his friend at the start of the film, and realizes he’s been relieved of his dough. A not-too-sympathetic police officer steps in and at mark 15:15 delivers a message to all sailors: “That’s the trouble. These boys won’t do as they’ve been warned. They bring too much money ashore and flash it around and get drunk. First think you know they’ve been dipped, maybe by some cutie, or rolled. There isn’t much you can do for them. They can’t give enough information to make a case.”
As the film flashes to the drunken sailor’s buddy, enjoying domestic tranquility with his girlfriend and her attractive friend in the comfort of a perfect 1940s home, shore patrol enters the scene at mark 16:48, carrying the film’s unconscious star into jail to end the film.

I came in the Navy during the Vietnam War, if they had movies like this in boot camp I don't remember it. But, then, all that I remember about boot camp is the marching everywhere, the constant cleaning of the barracks, food in the chow hall being eaten so fast that you never tasted it, and nearly contracting pneumonia in service week (sleeping 3-4 HOURS a night and working more than 16-17 A day, for over a week).

@@richarddismore5901I guess it's a coincidence that they film this in Los Angeles at the Navy Communications School the same year that Earl Holliman was discovered to be acting underaged in the Navy at 16 .
So it was decided by the Navy that it would have been embarrassing to the Navy recruitment drive to come firward publically so they gave him an honorable discharge from a neutral discharge.
He got kicked out of the Navy in 1944 at 16 because the producers of the Navy films became suspicious because he looks so young ...that he was definitely not 18. They were right he enlisted at 15! Check out Earl Holliman Wikipedia page he was an actor even at 13 and he already tried to go to Hollywood once but failed after 1 week. So he enlisted in the Navy a year later at 15 and served 1 year 1943-44 Navy communication School in Los Angeles where they filmed all of these episodes, lol.
The same year this film was made I should add....this led to questions about his age... a full year after enlisting and when they found out about his age it came almost a scandal and he was given a discharge when word got out that he enlisted under age at 15. He was discharged honorably

Must have been made, or at least released, toward the end of 1945. The then Department of War was slashing the fleet, canceling almost every ship planned or under construction. Some of the oldest and most worn out ships were already being scrapped, and about 30% of the fleet was scheduled to be decommissioned to reserve. The slogan "Keep the fleet to keep the peace" was part of the Navy PR campaign to get the public onboard with pressuring Congress to stop the scrapping and decommissioning. Never let it be said the Navy didn't know how to insulate itself from budget cuts.

Right hand rates ranked higher if they were working together on their own division's tasks but if working in another division or any non-seaman division then everyone just went by seniority.

I have seen some contemporary documentaires showing how some of the foreign country bars/clubs.. and even some in the USA will contract attractive females to spend all their money and use their credit card and will take them for everything they have and even don't have (as in credit card transactions). There was on documentary about a club based in Miam Florida area that was owned by russian criminals that would import russian women (human trafficed). And they would try to get (and did) get tourists to come into thier bar/club via these girls.. and once in, they would drug the guy and then rack out large transactions on thier credit card. They would sel them a wine bottles that only cost them less than $5 and charge their credit card over $1000 per bottle. And they were getting away with this scheme untill one of the guys they pulled this on was a weather Newscaster, who wouldn't let it go.. and eventually got law enforcement to help convict them. And I think the outcome is they were just deported back to Russia. The law enforcement discovered the russian thugs were recruiting poor pretty women in russia and adjecent countries like Belarus etc.. promising them good money and a trip to the USA to work.. but once they got them to the USA, they took their ID and Passports and saddled them with debt they never could repay, and kept them ignorant of their rights, to get them to do these terrible things to people.

@@keyweststeve3509 Hehehe, djtheg6819 was being facetious. The guy coming home drunk and locked up for years is gonna have WAY wilder stories to tell even if he doesn't remember them. Nothing wrong with being "Square", but who do people prefer to watch videos about? The guy who followed the rules and stayed clean their whole life? or the moron who was lucky to be locked up before he threw himself off a building thinking he could fly with the money in his pocket? It's tragic when it happens to real people, but it's what makes 90% of entertainment, people acting dumber than us and living to tell the tale. Knowing THAT is living.

The biggest crime I’ve seen happen here is that taxpayer dollars were used to create this schlock.

You mean the whole war, not just the movies right? I swear the way some of these guys talk about patriotism especially knowing how people in Congress are today makes me seriously ask "Why...did we go to war in the first place even back in WWII?" and I don't want to hear "To stop the Nazis" cause at least a quarter of those in Congress actively defended the Nazis just a few years ago... so that's on US.
