I have a very similar approach to yours, I only buy what I want to wear. I have more perfumes that I could possible wear in a lifetime and some perfumes are absolute favourites that I would repurchase, and some that I wouldn’t miss if they were gone tomorrow. So I’ve had some lessons to learn and refine my purchases. Also, through the years my taste has changed drastically and I am now much more drawn to classics and “old school” perfumes than the latest niche release. Currently, I’m in a full Chanel discovery and rediscovery. Years ago I couldn’t even smell Coco, Coco Noir or No 5 or No 22, now I’m completely transfixed by them and have so much appreciation for the artistic vision of the house. My latest additions were Comète, No. 22 and Coco parfum. My next one will be No.5, can’t believe how long it took me to really appreciate and understand this masterpiece.
Don’t get me wrong; I have a crazy amount of perfume for an average person, and I’ll probably never use it all up. I don’t mind not using something for years because I bought it to keep. Of course, tastes change and declutters happen, but when someone is decluttering a third of their collection every couple of months, you know something must be wrong. I also appreciate Chanel more than their prices. I love Coco and like Comète, but I’ve yet to try No. 22. As I get older, I appreciate Chanel perfumes and their history more and more. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the topic. 🙂
@@lukeparfumsI agree that there’s nothing to love about the current Chanel prices. I expect they will only keep increasing 😾 It’s also possible that they will reformulate again and I’m debating whether I should just get a one last backup bottle of the classics I love the most. I don’t have much experience with second hand purchases and am very weary of possible scams.
I agree with absolutely everything you said! I appreciate this video so much! Whenever I see perfume influencers having a huge collection in their background, I don't envy them, I just find it overwhelming and a bit worrying. As you said, I do not like calling my perfumes a "collection", because I don't want to buy bottles and just store them, I want to wear them and enjoy each and everyone. Looking forward to your videoa about.perfume history❤😊
Each to their own but I would never have a collection of 400 bottles simply because it would make me anxious and overwhelmed every single day. Thank you so much for commenting. 🙂🧡
I totally agree with you Luke! After going crazy trying to buy everything everyone here on YT was telling I needed, I’ve slowed down my purchases! I have made excellent discoveries and I also spent money for perfumes that aren’t me at all. I try to be more careful now and enjoy my perfumes a little more. With about 200 bottles, I have plenty to play with. I also try to buy travel sprays if I really want to try a new perfume. If I go through it, then I’ll buy a full bottle…
Yes, I only buy what I am truly interested in. I took a year and a half of ‘no buy’, and using and loving what I already own. It is a real revelation. Purely enjoy! Thanks so much, Luke.
That’s so true, Julie. Sometimes we need to take a step back to reevaluate our situation and then start afresh. It is indeed a revelation. My low/no buy has helped me appreciate what I have and not constantly chase after something new. Thanks for watching. 🙂
I love the practice of mindful consumption, including perfume. This is the third video in a week that has advocated mindfulness and enjoying what you have rather than mindless overbuying. I think it might be a new trend and I’m for it. Younger people evidently do look up to influencers and desire to emulate them. It would be nice to see them take up mindfulness. I love small capsule wardrobes based on lifestyle or event categories, and filling in accordingly, and same with perfume. Why have tons of things you never use? At my stage of life I have come to realize that possessions too often own us, not the other way around. It is liberating to let acquisition addiction fall away by practicing mindfulness, being present in the now and savoring it. I’m not saying people shouldn’t collect things they love, just that acquisitions should be appreciated, not hoarded. I’m preaching to myself here. 😏
Hi there! I wasn’t aware it was a trend, but now that you mention it, I remember the recent 'very mindful, very demure' TikTok trend. I had no intention of being a part of that, but let’s say that more and more people, especially the younger Gen Z generations, have changed their purchasing habits. They don’t care for designer items as much as we did. In the perfume community, I see little change. Yes, possessions shouldn’t own us, and designer logos shouldn’t define us. Yet I think I’m still a maximalist, given how many clothes and perfumes I own. I’m not someone who can have a capsule wardrobe, but I’m moving in the right direction. I’ll just never be a minimalist. Great insights, thank you.
Well said Luke! I only purchase scents that I absolutely love. All I need is a few bottles of perfume for spring/summer wear, and a few favourite scents for autumn/winter.
Hi Luke😊 You’ve made some excellent points here and I agree with all of them! I fell down a perfume rabbit hole about 18 months ago, soon after crawling out of the makeup rabbit hole!! 😊 I was very easily influenced. All of my perfumes were blind buys! The only redeeming thing about that was, through my mistakes, I learned what I liked, and what I DON’T. I’m very careful now about what I buy, in all categories. There’s only a few people who could ‘influence’ me now 😁, and it’s never done for their personal gain. They know what I like. I have all areas under control now, but there’s always room for improvement. I love the scents I have. I’m enjoying them. I’m sure there will be more. But carefully chosen, and as such, even more enjoyable. Thank you for presenting this thought provoking subject. 🤔
Hi Leah, thank you.🙂 You've learned what your tastes are through trial and error, and that’s okay. We all went through the rabbit hole phase; some never manage to climb out, unfortunately. Having spending under control is a sign of personal growth. Exactly-when you choose wisely, invest in great quality items, and spend time enjoying them, the whole experience is much more enjoyable. Perfume is a luxury after all and should be treated as such, at least for me. It’s an indulgence.🙂🧡✨
Hi Luke, I’m so happy to have found your channel. I wanted to second that I love your perfume history videos. I also adore your collection. Thanks for your contribution.
Hi Luke Hope you are well ?? Great video and good topics . It is Soo true I do see fragrance influencers on RUclips who have MASSIVE Collections of Fragrances . Hundreds of Bottles of Perfumes and they do declutter Fragrance and Cosmetics on Mercari for profit . But they will buy 10 more bottles to share on their site . It’s actually crazy and we are talking some really crazy out there expensive perfumes and fragrance houses I’ve neither heard of and will never be able to afford . I bottle of fragrance costing $500-$600 a bottle because they have to have it !! This price point being in Canadian Dollars is an Insane amount of Money I simply could never afford nor would I ever pay . But some influencers with money like this do put out. Luke I know what you said in your video is true . I agree putting money in these small perfume Houses pocket buying there relatively unknown fragrances is crazy . When the Classic Perfume Houses like Dior ,Estee Lauder , Chanel ,Cacheral Givenchy & Guerlaine etc have been around for many decades with Masterpieces in Fragrance which I love like I know you do . I stand behind your word s of Wisdom . You are a true dear and I appreciate and admire you and your channel . My most recent purchase was a bottle of Mon Guerlaine and it is beautiful . I have wanted to purchase a bottle for a long time and finally did . Please take care of yourself . The weather here in Canada has been very nice for October . Temperature in the upper Teens in the day and single digits at night . Very nice . Well I ‘ve babbled enough my dear fragrance friend . With Hugs from Canada til next time LAURA 🙋♀️😊👍🏻🍂🍂🍁🎃👻💀😱🇨🇦🇨🇦
Hi Laura, I’m fine, thanks for asking! How have you been lately? My friend told me that some people sell on Mercari for profit; we couldn’t believe it, as we always lose money when we sell something. I can’t pay that kind of money for a fragrance, nor do I want to. I wouldn’t say these houses are that small. I don’t mind supporting small businesses, but I'm not a fan of brands that rely solely on influencer marketing. I’ve tested perfumes from two such brands, and they all smelled synthetic. I wasn’t a fan! I’m glad you’re enjoying the Canadian autumn; our weather is just as lovely, though it’s getting colder. Have a nice week, dear! 🙂🧡
Hi Luke, You have touched on so many thoughtful points. The price of perfumes has gone up so much these past few years. When I was younger I was able to purchase almost any perfume I wanted, and I was not a financially stable person. Now that I'm older,I have to be careful with what I purchase. I'm the type of person who is easily "Influenced" by the "Hype" of current scents. I will be more careful with my current purchases.Thank you for reminding us all to be true to ourselves, and mindful of unnecessary consumption. Happiness, and Health to you, Cindy🌻
Hello Cindy, well said. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the subject. I used to get easily influenced by the hype, but not anymore. Take care. 🙂🧡
I Do not like blind buying... I learned that just because a couple of influencers like a certain fragrance doesn't mean it's right for me and my body chemistry...
Hello Luke. 🧡 My goodness I can't believe your topic in this video! 😊 I too have had the same feelings & thoughts about my fragrance collection as you, I am NOT going to pay $300 to $400 dollars US, any more... Sometimes you only realise this much later in your fragrance journey! As you might know buy now I own horses & do a lot of riding, so I put a lot more money into the stables & riding tack! Owning horses in itself costs a pretty penny! But I love my animals ❤ But it also means I will never stop (cold turkey) in buying a little stink me nice, from time to time! But some of the fragrance houses are really definitely going WILD with there prices, like my dad would say... Its just common daylight robbery 😅 Appreciate the frags you have too... 🌼 Like always Luke, bless you & those you love Gerhard xoxo
Hi Gerhard, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the subject. I’m not surprised that keeping horses doesn’t come cheap. Dropping $400 on a fragrance is not something that's realistic for me. When c*vid started, I bought a bunch of niche samples from Xerjoff, PDM, BDK, and others, but I didn’t get any full bottles. Yes, some of the niche brands that use influencers as their main source of marketing release fragrances that are simply bad from an ingredient perspective. Synthetic and cheap smelling. Thanks for watching. 🙂✨🍂

Very good points here, and a great video. I’ve changed to purchasing travel size fragrances, so I can still enjoy them and it helps to reduce my spending 😊
Hi Claire! I'm not sure if I commented, but I remember watching the entire video you made on this topic some time ago. At that time, I was also reorganising and decluttering my collection.🧡
I have slowed down a lot. I spent two months not buying anything, i agree with you, you dont need a lot to be happy. A smaller collection that you love is best, because what's the point in having things you don't wear? 😊
Hi Claire! Me too, I’m trying to do that now as well, waiting until Christmas if possible. I doubt it’s going to last that long, but it’s a nice challenge to set for yourself every now and then. 🙂
Yes I have been influenced to purchase perfumes purely because an influencer has it and when I get it I dislike it😮. Blind buying has not worked out well for me. I do not resell any of them either so I feel overwhelmed with all these bottles of perfume. I have recently begun to use them as fragrance diffusers 😅
