- This is the primary video in the Safety in Bear Country video series, and is a major educational tool for anyone living, traveling, or working in black and grizzly bear country in North America. It includes the consensus opinion of leading experts on bear behavior and its relevance to human safety. Viewers will develop a better understanding of bear behavior and how this knowledge can help them to minimize the chance of bear encounters and bear attacks. The video stresses that a much greater degree of co-existence with bears is possible if people understand and apply a few safety principles.

Great video! However, regarding bear spray.... the sad truth is that 6 people who deployed bear spray since 2016 have died tragically after the spray failed to stop the attacking bear. Some of these people were experienced guides and one was a wildlife biologist. Several more didn't die but were seriously injured when the spray failed. Bear spray was pushed based on a flawed study by Professor Tom Smith, who admitted recently that he intentionally left information out of his study that would show that bear spray was less effective than firearms. People are literally dying or becoming disabled over this bear spray hoax. Bear spray is only good for nuisance or defensive encounters. But on an aggressive or predatory bear, they often ignore it and keep attacking. There needs to be a serious public discussion about this in both Canada and in the US.

Information that is true to life does not always have a link. A gun will kill a bear, and a dead bear won't kill you. It is important to have lethal force when you're using non-lethal weapons. Bear spray is a deterrent and will prevent aggressive bears from attack, but it's not as insured as a gun. Guns can miss, and most people who bring a gun to defend themselves from a bear is likely not going to have adequate knowledge on how to shoot a bear, which ends up with them attacked or dead. With having a gun, it's a responsibility to learn how to prevent the situation of ever needing to use it. Nobody should want to kill a bear or any wild animal, but when bear spray doesn't work, you still need to defend yourself. National Forest Authorities provide slight misinformation that is preferred for people to learn, because holding a gun means you're probably going to use it. Many bears die from people who are afraid that weren't a threat to begin with.
Sorry to hear about the people who deployed spray and were killed anyway. It would be interesting to know if the spray was deployed according to instruction. I wish there was info on how many times bear spray did work.

Few rules when in bear country, most bear attacks are you spooking the bear so when walking in the woods make noise, experienced hikers wear little bells on their boots and packs and carry bear spray. Be aware of your surroundings at all times and learn the signs of bear activity on and off trails, for example bear scat/poop, bear poop is easy to recognize, black bear poop will consist of berries and bits of fur while grizzly bear poop will consist of little bells and smell like pepper spray.....Happy hiking.

This was AND STILL IS the go-to bear safety video that’s based on behavior, science, and the deep knowledge of legends in the bear research world. Definitely listen to it and share it. I’ve used it in so many bear safety trainings over the last decades. This is timeless information to be armed with in bear country.
Bear Safety Part 1: Bear Behavior & Why Bears Attack - on yt is kinda good also. Tho I really missed one thing from this particular video: I heard that lying down on your stomach will NOT work vs black bears, only grizzlies and only vs a defensive attack.
Science huh, then why does the info dispensed contain a colossal error? An error in the info in under two minutes? Really, under 2? Yep. They immediately miss-label the animal type entirely. The black and brown bear are not carnivores. Nor have they ever been. Not at all and not even close. Omnivorous they both are, all day, everyday. just short of 2 minutes is plenty to let me know I have not found the right video, not at all.
If the bear is attacking you while you are laying down on the ground, with your legs exposed, there is a big risk you won't walk away, after the attack, because of your wounded legs. That's not smart.

in my 30+ years educating myself on brown bears and advice of bear biologist this video is the#1 best cautionary video of how to trek safe in bear country. I'm really impressed with the hosts bear advice on safety. Really top notch safety instructions!!! 👍👍

They want Bears to live but suicides in humans on the ridiculous rise. if we started caring for our own we might do better with Bears.
And put a portable electric bear fence around your campsite. There’s one out there weighing only 2.4 lbs and it’s really capable. Passive deterrence for a good night’s sleep.

As an avid outdoorsman whos visited and solo hiked in many parks and been on too many hunts to count. And as someone who has survived two solo encounters with bears that had intent to kill, and many other charges by many different animals... Make lots of noise, and never show fear! Avoid direct eye contact, as many animals will veiw that as a dominance challenge. Good bear spray works very very well on everything, but a boomstick backup is highly recommended.
If you're more than 30 yards away and feel an attack is imminent? Warning shot in the dirt infront of them, slightly to one side so as not to hit them with a ricochet. Or past their head usually works wonders. Practice with both until you are absolutely confident!! Don't shoot at the skull of a bear bison or moose, as they are very thick and will likely deflect depending on caliber and ammo type. You should aim for the chest, center mass. Never, ever run as they are 3x faster than you. Back away slowly while looking behind you quickly with your peripheral so you don't trip/fall or back into a tree.
You should have your spray always, IN YOUR OFF HAND if you walk alone. There is rarely time to draw and aim in an encounter. Trust your instinct and training... Dispense the spray in their face, as you draw your boomstick. Bears are extremely fast and usually get close before they make their move. Cougars are the real danger. Silent and very deadly ambush predators. (Look up when approaching a rocky outcrop or trees. Again, LOOK UP!) Always check local laws!!! Don't break the law, just plan a different trek.
Don't dispense your boomstick unless you have no choice, and DON'T stop shooting untill the threat is completely neutralized. Try not to hurt these animals!! But in a you vs. them scenario, all bets are off. You are in their domain, and you might look like lunch? Especially in fall!

My son works forestry in Montana. He is out there alone a lot and I always pray for his safety from bears, lions, etc. Hopeful he never encounters that one bear or mt lion in an aggressive mood
In British Columbia and Alaska, there is open season on Grizzly Bears and Black Bears. Those Bears have a healthy respect for Humans because they are hunted. Unfortunately, in Montana, they're not hunted and therefore don't respect Humans. Montana needs to put Human Beings First.

Also, bears and humans can get along peacefully most of the time without hunting, as proven for decades in Canadian and US National Parks where bears and people are in the same areas 365 days a year. Once fed they may have to be killed. But otherwise peace reigns. It's simply not true that hunting is necessary for humans to live with bears. Carry bear spray and know how to respond if close encounters occur. There are excellent videos on correct bear safety. Don't shoot bears, respect them. Peter

No bear spray for me. I carry Glock 10mm spray. I'm not going to waste precious time with a chemical spray on a charging Grizzly when only lead will do. Bears are a cousin to Pigs and Hogs. That's why we don't just get along.

I had a black bear come into my camp I was cooking food he would not leave lucky I had my good old shotgun with me after it refused to leave I shot a round into the air it left then always carry a weapon to defend yourself

The problem with education is most people want to believe everything is super dangerous and irrationally hostile because it makes them feel like badasses when they conquer and destroy it whether such destruction is warranted or not
The problem with not educating people about bears and bear safety is that way too many people and bears get killed or injured.
@@featherknife8611Hi. I'm new here. In Florida we have Black Bear. Although they tend to be a bit smaller, it's mainly the Sows that are smaller. I have been planning a trip to one of the National Parks for sometime so I have been like a sponge soaking up knowledge. What I have seen (generally speaking) is that if there is an attack and a human death occur, there is very little talk of whether it was predation or defense. The Bear is 80% going to be "euthanized" For some reason or another humans don't really care why the attack and death happened. Ultimately, I have noticed that the Bear will pay the price although in a couple of cases it was clear the a Sow and Cub were involved and the death was not predation but defensive.

A big fat black bear walked across the road about 7 feet in front of us. .we did not move a muscle nor blink. the old bear was walking fast swinging its head side to side happened in Maine U.S.A
What a gorgeous black bear at 11:01💕! I am drawn to bears for some reason and absolutely respect and admire them. Trying to educate myself in case I ever come in contact with one. I love camping, hiking. The fly fishers always seem totally oblivious of them!
Come to Michigan I'll take you and we will go visit some. Cute and cuddly that's what I like. Put you up in a tree with a camera and a bait pile beneath you bring in all kinds of bears we got back we got cinnamon. You know when the big one comes in all the little ones scatter. You never know that big one may push a little up the tree your in so you can get a close up picture. We even have bears in the lower peninsula. They swim across the lake all the time. And I'm talking about the great lakes.
They are vicious carnivores who would eat you for lunch!
Those fly fisherman and bears in those areas are very aware of each other, that time of year those bears are there to fatten up for winter on the fish that are spawning. Those bears are focused on those fish, plenty to go around so they are tolerant of other bears and people. From the time there young they learn whats going on at that time of year and whos who at the river. Best thing is to talk to the experts in whatever area your in and they will give you the heads up on whats going on and what to do in that area. Education / preparedness up your odds in a encounter.

Very useful video. I was looking something similar in Russian language, but could not find. There seem to be an increase in bear numbers in European part of Russia near large towns, but no information how to behave correctly if bear encounter happens. Thank you for the video (not sure that bear stray is available in Russia).
Walking away from the bear, be sure there isn't a bear behind you.
A few weeks after this video was posted two people were killed by grizzlies in Alberta, close to the area where we usually spend time. One of the victims was an expert on bear safety.
Good advice to stay calm, never run, make noise and do whatever it takes to defend yourself if necessary.

My grandfather kill one in the u.p. of Michigan braking in his friends house across the street from my grandfather home. The bear was tearing the back door down on his home while the people were still in the house. That happened about 50 years ago in rexton Michigan up just off the hiawatha trail close to new Barry. There's news papers record about the incident. My grandfather name was Paul a. Pond I'm sure you can find the story. His friend across the street name was buster. They had a cute little dog named snoopy. Little guy tried to protect the house and he had a lame leg. He was a tuff little dog.
Thank you for the great video. It's too bad we always come back to bear fatalities - they are so rare. I'm sure there are way more hiking fatalities of other kinds, not even including the drive on the highway to get there.

Great video. As a German, I have never seen or met a bear. Soon I'll be spending 6 months in Montana, biking through nature. Bears are definately around there and I am intending to watch this video before each trip, so that I've got all of that in mind. I think it's no exaggeration, that this knowledge and it's proper use can safe my life and health at some point. As it seems to be legal for aliens, I will carry a gun, but I'd prefer to not harm a single animal at any point. This video certainly let me know, when I better step over this intention.
It's kind of like going in the bears' kitchen while presenting oneself as a tasty treat that's fun to eat.

@@MonTube2006 There are no apex predators in skyscrappers. The only skyscrappers we don't belong in are those that are to be brought down with military-grade thermite, like the Twin Towers for example.
Minimally helpful. The average person is NOT going to be able to tell whether the bear was a defensive bear attacking and biting you (so keep quiet, play dead, don’t fight back, etc), or whether it was an aggressive bear that is attacking you (so yell and fight back). Some advice is helpful, but once being attacked I think this is more confusing than helpful.
Disagree - they show footage and explain the behaviors. It’s pretty clear and concise. I think there are some changes to the messaging that could be made which the biggest is if a bear defensively charges or aggressively approaches spray bear spray either way. Trying to figure out the nuances of the situation can be challenging but watching this video and talking with parks staff will go along way to be avoid negative interactions

We have Black Bears where I live down in West Texas out in the panhandle.
They're also in Big Bend National Park in Texas, New Mexico and Mexico.
Interesting fact. The great majority of cougar attacks are on Vancouver Island B.C. The two other hotspots in North America are Cuyamaca, east of San Diego Ca. and Big Bend, Texas.

A whistle is smaller and lighter than that toot with cone. Also, having an axe is useful for many things, bears included. I will not claim that an axe is a savior, but is better than bare-handed.
When you sleep in the wilderness, keep a powerful lantern already set on its strongest output. In LED era, powerful lanterns can be quite small. Keep the lantern's strand around a wrist, while sleeping. A direct lantern glare in bear's eyes if efficient, unless that bear really likes people, or their taste, more correctly.
By the way, while sleeping, I keep around the other wrist a cord going to the handle of my axe, just in case. Questionable how useful it may be, but it is better than bare-handed.
By the I remember all of this and figure out what's my course of action...ears back is...defense or hungry...be soothing or start swigning...oops too late.
What no firearms mentioned ? In the real world in bear country having a shotgun or big bore revolver is a must.

I always had an easy time with bears. Every time I saw one they would just walk up to me and say, "I love you Brother Cooper" then give me a big bear hug.
Its because of advice like this that people dont think about carrying a lethal weapon or at least bear spray when hiking in bear country. It is NOT UP TO YOU. NEVER WILL BE UP TO YOU. Do not think for a second your in control of the encounter. It all depends on there current mood an hunger weather or not you get attacked. Sometimes on how they view you as well. An some just are not aggresive enough to test a human when never encountering one before
Bears and other apex predators attack because they are hungry, angry, or threatened. Bears are territorial. However, bears are unpredictable and can attack for any reason. Sometimes nothing stops a bear except being dispatched by an effective first shot. Bear spray can work if the weather is not windy or rainy. Grizzly bears are the most vicious and dangerous and can kill for no apparent reason except probably to show who is boss. Humans are prey to apex predators.

good video my deterrent was a 12guage shotgun with slugs and a 50 caliber revolver. Bear got to within 10 feet of me and I was able to back away slowly. If I wouldn't have had significant fire power I don't know if I would've been able to remain my composure and extricate myself from the encounter. It's pretty windy where I'm at and pepper spray would be useless, and people have been killed by bears with an empty can of pepper spray next to their body....BTW pepper spray is a hazardous material and can't be transported on the commuter aircraft in Alaska. this video is to P C it should talk about what sea[ons to have with you in bear country and how best to shoot a bad bear.

@@IBAbearbiology I'm in Italy and I have to put subtitles or a voice explaining what's happening when people met a bear. Just have a question: The size of boys is not like that of an adult. They will probably ask the teacher if the children change the bear's behaviour. I mean, the bear can see a kid like easy prey.
I think the key is to take all the advice, bring bear spray and a knife and/or a gun but never ever let anything give you a false sense of safety. There are exceptions to every rule.
Hi I live in Australia and will probably never get to see a bear in the wild ( koala bears don't count) I've always loved bears especially grizzly bears there strength and beauty and unwavering devotion to there cubs and there curiosity AWE some animals. It worries me that people are driving them out of there natural habitat and the bears are the ones that pay for our greed and want to control everything. Unfortunately. Long Live the Bear
They were driven out of most of their habitat 100 years ago. Now grizzlys live mostly in a couple of National Parks. They were eating way too many people. There are plenty of black bears all over the place. Bears that are the size of garbage trucks with claws the size of bananas are not a good match for civilization.
a little bit misleading, black bear sows rarely show any aggression even when cubs are present! brown are another story entirely!
When i am in Bear country i always travel with a partner who can not out run me. I am looking for a new partner now. It will be decided with a foot race. The losers will be picked by their 1 mile times. Comment if you are interested in joining on this post.

No can't smell it, but by nature a bear tests almost every thing. They will put teeth into gas cans , chew up a camera just to see what in it for food so yes they will break into it.

There were plentiful bears where I am once upon a time. As much as I love animals, I am in a crowded state, and wasn’t happy when the state decided to re-introduce them. Now they are doing great, but people are in a ruckus and complaining. People move out of the city, want to live in the woods - but don’t want to be bothered securing their trash and bird feeders and are crying for more hunting.

I'd rather carry bear spray. If you shoot and miss, you're fucked. Don't have to be very accurate with spray.

anyone who can help I will really appreciate it. I will be living in bear country for around 6 months each year and intend to be going on walks in free time etc. I am a British citizen and would like to know if foreigners are allowed to apply for the unrestricted gun license. I have shot many times in the UK both shotguns and rifles. Although these tips would 90% mitigate a bear attack, I would feel far safer having a shotgun so I know if it comes to it I will win the fight. Is it possible for non citizens to legally get a bear gun e.g. just a little shotgun
Yeah but you'll be waiting least 6 months for that gun license. And no I think the gun license is for citizens only but we are a commonwealth nation so maybe??

Ask yourself this..can you think of a worse way to die then to be torn apart and eaten by a giant bear while your still alive? If your answer is no...its worth being armed and as prepared as you can be is crossing paths with one is possible.

Would love a video on how to act in bear encounters when accompanied by a dog (how to handle the dog in those situations). I might stay calm and back away slowly but the dog might be panicking, making sudden moves and barking. My guess is that my best bet is to try and calmly/slowly carry my dog up in my arms to control it and then back away with it, but unclip its leash and in case of an attack, throw the dog away and hope it can run away? To add: I'm not looking to "sacrifise" the dog for my safety as a lot of heartless people suggest, I'm looking at a strategy of acting that hopefully gives us both better odds. PS: Yes, assume that all precautions have already been taken (dog on leash etc)
or you can leave dog at home. because dog will give it's life for it's owner. it's not going to help your safety in any instance. because if and when a bear kills the dog it will most likely directly kill the human afterwards!!! i know this to be fact because I've been through 6+ story's of brown and black bears killing people's dogs in North America. trekking in bear country with a sidearm bear spray and a few friends is best way to enjoy wildlife. and your trusty cannine companion will be waiting safe at home for you. ✌️👍 ps. for those that suggest using your dog to bide you time in an attack those people don't deserve any domestic pets in their lives.

You should never play dead in a black bear attack. That is only in a grizzly attack if there trying to scare you off or if they feel threatened. Play dead with a grizzly. Unless the grizzly is very very skinny, then you fight for your life cause it's starving and gonna eat you. But a black bear never let it get you on the ground and never play dead. If a black bear gets you on the ground you better fight for your life cause it's gonna kill you..
Lots of good information, but you didn't spend much time (about 24 seconds) on the most important tool for defending your life in bear country. A firearm. Caliber and bullet type would be important to go over. Bearspray is okay somertimes, but rather weak at only 2% O.C. Bearspray is regulated by the EPA as a pesticide and mandated not to exceed 2% O.C. (oleoresin capsicum) It also does not work well when it is windy, especially if the wind is blowing in your direction, or if it's raining, or when you're at an elevation of about 7000 ft. or higher. That's why most people in Alaska carry a firearm and practice how to use it. If you don't own a firearm or don't wish to carry one, then bearspray would be better than not carrying anything. Just remember bearspray is not 100% effective either.
Actually statistically people carrying bear spray are more likely to survive a bear attack I think the figure is some like 50% more likely to leave the bear encounter with no to minor injuries when carrying bear spray when compared to people who were attacked while carrying firearms
Well, it kind of depends on the studies that one reads. I've seen more research done by sources that I trust showing that firearms are much more effective against an attacking bear. As long as a person is using a heavy, penetrating caliber and has good shot placement, otherwise not so much. Bear spray can and does (sometimes) work against young or curious bears, or a bear that is only making a 'bluff' charge. On the other hand, a mother bear defending it's young or a bear that is surprised by someone, or one that is defending a kill, or the somewhat less common predation attack, those type of scenarios is where bear spray is less effective than having a firearm and knowing how to use it. That's why I mentioned Alaska. I have friends who live there and tell me that most 'locals' always carry a firearm in the bush and don't rely on bear spray. Some will carry bear spray too, but feel better protected with the firearm, as there are some variables which make bear spray less effective. (Wind, rain, elevation, etc.) If a person can legally carry a firearm where they are hiking and feels comfortable using it, then I would suggest carrying both. Just in case.
@@chrisogren8154 i think that in general it could be because in Alaska a lot of people are more familiar with firearms and are more likely to place a good shot but your average hiker who has little experience with one will be better off in a stressful situation with bear spray because they wouldn’t be able to effectively use a firearm but I totally get your point

Most likely, usually and unlikely are adjectives indicating probability of occurrence. However I submit the question to the viewers of this video. And that is do you want to assign a probability to your life or to the fact that you will be seriously injured or maimed for the rest of your life? And a number of bear attacks have in fact occurred for people practicing the behaviors as described in this video. Our forefathers clearly understood that bears are highly unpredictable, extremely dangerous apex predators that can kill a man with one swipe of its paw. And the best advice is what our forefathers knew and that's the only good bear is a dead bear. And when you see them in the distance, if they do not walk away or run the other direction from you, immediately take out your .308 rifle with bear killing cartridges loaded in it, AIM carefully, and kill the bear. Having a bear in close proximity to you for any reason, even if it's only a 1% probability, is far too risky for it to take your life or seriously injure and handicap you for the rest of your life. In fact I submit that any chance whatsoever Beyond 100% is too risky. And never, never, under any circumstances whatsoever go into Bear Country without a 308 or larger or hunting rifle loaded with bear killing cartridges in a side arm of a 45 handgun by your side. If you don't own them weapon, then take gun safety training courses and buy yourself some. Relying on a chemical spray in which you must be in close proximity to the apex predator is ludicrous, dangerous and putting your life in limb at risk. Flare guns are a waste of time because they cannot injure the animal or stop it if the animal decides to charge you for any reason. When dealing with Mother Nature there is one role, and one role only. What is it? Might is right. One cannot reason with a bear and one never knows the circumstances in which the bear has come across to you because of its outstanding senses of smell and hearing. Polar bears and grizzly bears have long been known to track and kill men. Don't be stupid, always be ready to overpower the animal with Superior Firepower. And always have a backup weapon in addition to your bear killing rifle. One can always attempt to practice the behavioral techniques described in this video, but it is far better to have a backup plan to kill the animal if in fact you need to. It's simply not worth risking one's life or limb.

It's unfortunate that in the description of a non-defensive bear, or properly described as an aggressive bear that is intent on taking your life and eating you, do not do as suggested in this video. You should pull out a 12 gauge shotgun loaded with double o maximum strength bear killing cartridges and repeatedly fire at the vital organs or face of the bear. Once the gun is emptied, do not reload but rather pull out your 45 handgun and empty the contents of the 45 into the bear. It is your life or his at this point, and any person who goes into Bear Country without having a bear killing large bore rifle or shotgun and appropriate cartridges along with a 45 sidearm handgun is asking to be killed and eaten. It is not a classroom setting, it is survival of the fittest. And if you are are not fit, trained in firearms, and ready to defend your life, then these unpredictable and Powerful Apex creditors can easily take your life. To say the least, the video is highly misleading and describing the conditions of a non-defensive, or man-eating bear.
