  • In the end, this turns out not to work, but this might be an interesting look at the general pace of how I replace SDRAM chips.
I did flub some technical bits in the video; this is a rev1.1 board, not a rev 2 board, and these are SDRAM chips, not DDR. Rev2 boards are much more common, and the SoC supports DDR and they switched to it in later revs.

Kudos to you for having the guts to do what many would not... attempting this project and then posting a video of the failure. As they say... fortunately, we can learn from mistakes.

Yeap. I've actually learned a lot from this video.

You're given me some excellent info on using that special solder coupled with the flux with which I was already familiar. I was not familiar with that particular solder. I was amazed with the simplicity of removing the megapin IC's ! On a side note to everyone, I found an excellent and very cheap alternative to the canned 'flux remover' that tends to be expensive. It is called 'MEK' short for Methyl Ethyl Ketone which can be purchased very cheap in a quart can at Home Depot or likely any decent paint store. It works like a charm and makes for an extremely clean, professional job ! Thanks for the great video !

    WHAT WORKS AWESOME IS...
I took an old smaller shop vac, put a smaller attachment onto the end of the suction hose that I could attach a smaller hose too, which I use for my solder sucker !!
Works better then any solder braid or solder sucker because it completely removes solder while heating it !!
I have not had any issue with fires either but make sure you do not have dirt & or dust in your vac!!
    Thanks

Great video! Taking the time to show the process in real time was a good choice. This way we will know what to expect. Thank you

A heat gun with a small tip works awesome for heating all of your work area evenly!!
Works the best when removing chips or when you just want to re-flow solder!!
Beats having to pull the BGA-reballing equipment out !!!
    Thanks 4 Sharing !!

Hello there Ken, I was not too well this morning i suffer from cluster headaches, I can clearly see now in your video header that it says Ram sorry. It sounds like a good thing to do so its got more Ram to work and the SD card mode gives more room for scripts etc and files. I think its great the things that can be done with these Routers. DD-WRT etc,,
    regards

Is it possible just to leave the chips as they are and use solder paste to put the new chips on top of the current ones?

If router failed to boot after RAM upgrade, check for solder bridges (DO NOT rely only on visual inspection, use a multimeter to check each pin, some bridges are TINY) and make sure you didn't lift any traces when desoldering or resoldering, also check to make sure each pin has soldered sufficiently to the pad..
Trust me, if so much as two pins are bridged, or one pin lifted or inadequately soldered, the router will not boot!

Use flux on the pads before you solder makes it 10000 times easier to solder and then wash it with 96% alcohol

Actually what I would like to do is upgrade the ROM from 4 mbit so I can load a larger version of DD-WRT. Thanks for the video.

hey i have a problem with my router is a linksys wrt54gs v7 and i install the killer that they said in the instruction but when the light get solid i disconnect the led power and i connect it again when i see the light was on but no normal as router had can you say me how can i fix this problem that i make it

Hi there Kenneth, I might be getting confused on what your doing. Are you replacing physical thinking memory, or are those storage. If that is the bit that your scripts and things get saved to. I have successful added SD card support to these routers where i have tested 2Gig and also 4Gig SD cards having them working with DDRT, I was some time back that i did this but i set them up as Wifi Hotspots. I really enjoyed working on them. Regards Richard.

were I live there is no stores that stock solder braid :(, Radioshack does not carry it at all.

Very cool. Very impressive. Great dexterity.
I have a nurtured Wrt54G v5.0 with DD-WRT. If I swapped out the memory like you then how would I update the firmware to reflect the increased memory? Would the router detect the hardware change automatically? Could I then upload a different version of the DD-WRT firmware to it?

    • @nonya1111
      @nonya1111 8 лет назад

+Corey Short No this is not a Windows OS (Plug & Play), you would have to update the ROM to reflect Mem change..

+The Channel rooted*. What Linux tools (assuming) did you use to update the rom?

  • @violeman

Did you try to update the Firmware?
If not see if that helps !!
There might even be a firmware update for a 64mb system !!

how do you solder something so tiny without the pens touching each other is it flux I'm pretty new at soldering and I've been trying to solder a micro sd port back onto a board

Next time you solder a chip on a pcb, try dragging the iron over the legs of the chip.
    Enjoyed the movie tho. :)

    LMAO!! Yeah it sucks !!!
It Canada here Radio Shack was bought out by "The Source" ..
& they barely carry anything now either :(
I wanted to by my boy`s each one of those Electronic lab`s where you connect the wires to the little spring clamps to make circuits, but they are next to impossible to find now too .. :(
    Well Happy Shopping !!

Hopefully you reply back to me, I made this comment before the video ended so I am not sure if it was mentioned. But I am new to soldering, but did you just apply the solder across the pins? wont that cause problems if the solder is on two pins or bridging the pins? or that doesn't matter? That is part of the reason what I haven't done any ram upgrades so I thought each solder could not bridge with another ram pin which is intimidating when they're so close to each other.

    • @rxueloenz
      @rxueloenz 9 лет назад

If you use enough flux and not too much solder, it should reflow and the pins should not get connected to each other. But if that happens you need to clean that up. It would most likely kill the chip.

Request the store pull it for you from another store in the region, if they refuse; ask for the district managers information..

If you cannot get proper de-solder braid then find some old co-axial cable and strip the shield

My wrt54gr router which looks different than this one, because mine is wrt54GR, broke down after 10 years it acts weird when I change the settings and so I was thinking maybe there is a ram chip in it with a drained backup battery. And so I am looking at this video and I can not really see the battery, although there appear to be SDRAM chips in it, so it must have a battery ? Just wanted to ask that here before I try to dismantle mine. Thanks

Easier to take a dremel and cut the legs off then go over it with solder wick and flux to clean up the leftover solder and pins.
Place solder paste on the cleaned pads and stick the new chips on with some adhesive on the bottom and hit it with a heat gun = done
The way your doing it is the hard way and you risk burning the multilayered board, breaking traces, desoldering other parts on accident and creating microscopic solder bridges.
They DO in face make solder iron tips that fit over these chips to heat all the legs equally.
The v1.1 IS NOT able to work on 64Mb ram. the ROM cannot provision and allocate it properly and it will "brick up".
to revive it you have to put the original ram back in and redo all the ROM to revive it.
I think a v1.1 will go up to 32Mb but for 64Mb you may have better luck with a higher version.
Of course most of us would just buy a new router too

ElfNet Gaming when u dreml the chip , bits of metal legs brushed of all over the board. and how we can manage and guarantee such a brute method wont damage the board or neighboring components by a slip of the hand holding dremel, and the method he used in video to remove the chip seems hassle free, also we can use heat gun with narrow nozzle to remove the chip too, dremel is way to unsafe for such procedure in my opinion.
