I started a compost pile a couple of years ago in a back corner of my yard. Never turned. Filled it pretty full. Then I basically forgot about it. Now I have two papaya trees growing nicely in the pile. :) Last spring I planted some of the seeds from a store-bought papaya in a grow bag just to see what would happen. I threw the remnants in the compost. Now, I have 8 papaya trees growing. The best ones are those growing in the compost pile.

Not sure which type it is but i compost in a big fabric planter that i add food scraps & paper & leaves, some old potting soil that has alot of roots. I mix every time I add scraps.etc. Add water. Its very easy. Its great! Free compost. I dont take temps.

I have a 27 yr old leaf/junk pile that has black gold underneath but there are so many big tree roots going thru it i can't get a shovel or rake in far enough to get it out. So I started a smaller pile in a different area. Idk about all the greens/browns. I just dump leaves, occ grass and kitchen scraps on it. Hopefully it'll turn to gold.
Yeah it works that easy. Getting started is really the barrier. Thanks. Been in the garden today, just came in to see the video. I am in the process of putting together a compost area using pallets like you have there. I've been throwing everything in an old garbage bin on wheels and it gone from full to about 1/2 full, but I can't turn it very well. I decided to keep the bin by the back door for kitchen scrap convenience and ease to roll it to the garden. Can't wait for that black gold.
Nice on getting starting. This pile had very little done to it. A simple question, because we have chickens and goats and they will basically eat anything. So should we opt to going to cool composting with leaves as well as dead plants from the garden. Will the old dead tomato vines compost good? Also some weeds in there will this form of composting kill the possible seeds? Thank You and we do enjoy your channel!
Leaves are fine to mix in for sure. Any organic matter. Tomatoes or any old vegetables work. The chicken bedding will work. Okra and sunflower stems are kinda of tough but otherwise anything. Cold composting wont kill weed seeds but hot composting does. Any weeds are really ease to manage though. I hardly notice them. I do this- sort of! I take all of my used dirt, in my grow bags and dump them into a pile. Start feeding it the garden waste, and kitchen scraps (NO meat) and the worms take over. I don't add worms either! One shows up, and it tells 2 friends, and before you know their whole family has moved in 😆😆I have 2 piles going that are 2 years old. One will be used this year in the garden. I go back and check where I put out scraps in a day or 2 and they are gone. Except for potato skins. The worms will not touch the store bought tater skins! So, when I sift and if they are still there- they are going into the trash!
I do for sure. All your non meat food can go in there. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thankyou. I already picked a great spot next to my garden, I hope one day I have as many subscribers as you. You have a great channel.
Gary, thank you for your videos, I have learned so much. I am going to set up a bin for leaf mold and cold compost and I'm wondering if I can throw in all the potting soil i used in my large pots/bins this past summer. I'm currently trying to clean my yard up and I don't know what to do with all the soil so currently it'll all in a pile in the back yard. Do you have suggestions for me?

@Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) You say to add ALL garden waste. I'm assuming that excludes diseased foliage? I know powdery mildew (and probably a few others) will break down and die in a compost pile, but anthracnose will only in a hot compost pile. Comments, please? B/c I'd sure be able to compost a lot more if I could compost diseased plants. 🙄
Well toss it if. you are feel there is a risk. I compost diseased plants only because the diseases showed up and and show up with or without compost I make. A clean garden really is minimal for diseases sadly. The success is starting a preventive spraying plan early and sticking with it. Thanks. This is how you can support my creation of videos. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thx. What you said about disease showing up with or without the compost - it's true for our area, too (SE Oklahoma - annual average humidity 74%). I'm doing a lot better with spraying this yr, and hoping it helps. My biggest problem is with the anthracnose, which I was ignorant of back when I started and b/c I didn't know to try to get rid of it, it has become a pernicious and ubiquitous problem.

This fall I am going huge with my leaf pile (diameter-wise) to see if I can over-winter a bin of red wigglers outdoors in the center. My leaf cages are usually 4 ft wide by however long the bed is by 6-8 in deep. I am going at least 10 ft diam & 4+ ft high in one section using rolled wire fencing & T posts & will place the worm bin in the very center (after it cools to 80-85 degrees.) I'll drill holes in a large plastic tub or make a peg board box & place a plastic tarp above the top to keep a heavy rain or snow event from drowning the bin. Saw a vid by a guy who does this. His worms do OK & they mine/work the big leaf pile for him over the winter.

I will continue to make compost, but I am going to stop gardening for a year. I’m tired of it and not having fun doing it anymore . I’m thinking not doing it for a year might bring back the fun of doing it again.

Just did this in the forest where composing already started by a fallen tree. I layered leaves with wood. Maybe I should add something but Im afraid it will disrupt the composting. Adding on top and making the pile bigger seems to be the only way?
I do that too and put a single bag of grass across the pile every once in a while. Anything in cold compost really. I mostly do weeds, spent plants, food scraps, some leaves and a bag grass here and there. So I stared a Cold Compost nearly 2 years ago (don't have the space to set up 2 bins for hot compost). Planning on harvesting this Spring. My concern is that due to lack of heat, my compost will have more disease that can get onto my plants, and seeds that may have survived and will germinate. Have you noticed any of these issues? Thanks
You will get seeds often but they are really easily removed and when they sprout. After 2 years I dont get much weeds out of the stuff on the bottom. If you use stuff that didnt fully break down, stuff on top, there is risk of more weeds I suppose. Can you use leaves and wood chips from a yard that has been sprayed with chemicals treating pests and weeds. Im wondering if it will also be contaminated and if used will contaminate my garden. My neighbors leaves fall into my yard.
Spray to kill weeds can stay on lawns for a while. I recommend taking yard waste that has not had anything spread or sprayed on it for at least 90 days before even putting it in a compost pile. Can't you check any compost you buy or get from green waste to see if it's warm? I figured if it's warm it's still breaking down and not ready yet for the garden.
Not really, sometimes it is dry or over saturated or doesnt have enough greens to be warm. Question about starting a hot composting pile. I never seem to have enough material all at once to build a 4 X 4 foot pile. Any suggestions? I have a lot of wood chips and old hay, but the greens are an issue. We don't save lawn clippings (ours is a wild-ish yard and when we mow we just let it compost back on the lawn). Ideas on amassing 4 feet of material all at once? Also once built, do you continue to add to it or just let it sit?
You can use alfalfa pellets from seed stores but you have to buy it. The best greens is the lawn. Maybe just one or two times. You just need a lot of greens so it can be hard if you are trying to do it with out buying it. But AA is much cheaper than buying compost. I think I have a video on it if you look up wood pellets and alfalfa.
Compost can just be a pile and let it sit. So yes. Thanks... Here is how you can support me, more videos, and The Rusted Garden... I'm wondering if you can answer a question for me. I want to start up a cold composting area for my gardens at my mom's. She has mostly oak trees. I've been told that I can't use them because they are very acidic. Is that true?? Can I not use them?
At the end it wont be acidic. Compost is pretty neutral. Oak are think leaves and can take time to decay.
Yep. Nature does it best.

I just started doing this a month ago. So glad to see a video on it. I’m was also going to just leaves. Do u add anything to your leaf mold pile? Thanks for all u do
Leaf mold I just leave leaves. Sometime I toss in some handfuls of grass but generally just pile in the leaves. Ill be doing a video on it soon.

I hope that before too many years pass, I can move to a property with much more ground and some trees. More room for veggie garden, trees for fallen leaves so I can make compost too.
I hope you make it sooner than later
That's me! Missed another year! Lol..started some stuff but...??
You can pen up leaves and grass now. it will get you going

Can you add kitchen scraps (egg shells, coffee grinds, lettuce etc.) to the cold compost pile?
I do for sure. All your non meat food can go in there.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thankyou. I already picked a great spot next to my garden, I hope one day I have as many subscribers as you. You have a great channel.
So for cold composting you just put in green and browns and just water abit here and there and that's it?
Gary, thank you for your videos, I have learned so much. I am going to set up a bin for leaf mold and cold compost and I'm wondering if I can throw in all the potting soil i used in my large pots/bins this past summer. I'm currently trying to clean my yard up and I don't know what to do with all the soil so currently it'll all in a pile in the back yard. Do you have suggestions for me?
Yeah thats a great use for container soil.

My biggest problem is with the anthracnose, which I was ignorant of back when I started and b/c I didn't know to try to get rid of it, it has become a pernicious and ubiquitous problem.
good stuff, fungi, everything

I add some green grass clippings to kick start the decomp process. Some people pour on diluted urine.
Cool project. It should work.

I will continue to make compost, but I am going to stop gardening for a year. I’m tired of it and not having fun doing it anymore . I’m thinking not doing it for a year might bring back the fun of doing it again.
Sometimes you need a break. But maybe down size to 2 or 3 plants and keep it small. Just in case.

Or a family member or friend that doesnt use chemicals a bags grass but you have to get it fresh that day and use it or it smells 1 day later.
Coffee grounds is green. U can probably get it for free from a local coffe shop.
True good suggestion.
@@minibite3 Thank you! I’ll be hitting up my local coffee shop!
Cant i just add hot and cold altogether, whats the reason for the separation???

I'm wondering if you can answer a question for me. I want to start up a cold composting area for my gardens at my mom's. She has mostly oak trees. I've been told that I can't use them because they are very acidic. Is that true?? Can I not use them?
At the end it wont be acidic. Compost is pretty neutral. Oak are think leaves and can take time to decay. Chopping them up helps

I have oak and magnolia leaves and they are very thick so I rake them in a pile and the I mow over them with the grass catcher on it it chops them up nicely.
Ants invaded my cold pile… not sure if this matters except for the fact that they swarmed out when I tried to harvest some of it….
It happens for sure.

What is the difference between black vs brown color compost?
The organic matter. Leaves tend to become darker. Hay might be brown. Sometimes it is about of water that darkens it. Could be increase in worm activity that darkens it.
