The Taco Bell thing reminds me of the old pneumatic tube system in large cities. It might be a bit silly, but I actually always did like the idea itself for reducing congestion by being able to deliver to more than just one or two windows at once. Certainly as we go into an age where more and more of the internal processes inside of a restaurant are automated and orders are ready faster than before thanks to having multiples of each machine churning out orders one after another it might be a smart idea to have a delivery system that can deliver to 4+ cars at once.
It converts the drive through to a bankers queue system. The big advantage of that system is that if an order is delayed that customer doesn't inhibit processing of other customers. You will see some restaurants with drive throughs will have multiple windows or designated parking for delayed orders to achieve a similar effect without the crazy cost associated with this solution.
@@jedediahferguson5686 The difference here being getting totally used to not interacting with a real human. Once they can replace the workers in side with all robots, you won't even know the difference.
That Taco Bell reminds me a bit of the McDonald's that was by my university. It was built on a really steep incline, with the lobby and kitchen on top of the hill, and the drive through pickup window at the bottom of the hill. So to get food from the fry cooks to the cars in the drive through, the takeout bags were attached to one of those conveyors they use at dry cleaning places. Something about my cheeseburger needing to be carried via machine to my car made it taste better.
I was thinking about how amazing that would be to witness, only until realizing how often equipment gets cleaned in kitchens and how many bags spilled out onto the mechanism for the conveyor..
Apple will bring the USB-C port and act like it a great kindness and forward thinking that they put the effort into solving the impossible engineering problem.
Actually Apple did help in the creation of USB C but I doubt they’ll add it. They are more likely to go portless with magsafe or one up going with Thunderbolt

Can we please stop removing things and pretending they only have one use “so it’s not that big a deal” this is getting frustrating now…
Because apparently what most people matters is "no dangling cables" and similar. Convenience isn't really a huge thing about wireless since it actually is more of a hassle in pairing multiple devices than just directly plugging headphone jack from one device to another.
So airpods suck compared to good wired headphones/earphones in sound quality? Taking out headphone jack from iphones but not from macs isn't because of courage that Apple claims? Who would've thought...
I think I remember going through a Big Rooster drive-through a *loooong* time ago which had a similar setup. Although it wasn't a multi-lane affair, they had just positioned the drive-through lane a long way from the restaurant and used a conveyor lift system thing to send your order across the parking lot. (Big Rooster no longer exists in Australia. I think they were bought by Red Rooster)
Btw Linus, when you say Apple thinks different in making portless iphones, the Swiss government literally took away their trademark of Think Different which Apple owned.
Only in Switzerland. Basically the judge ruled Apple doesn't really use that slogan anymore and its not on any of their products, so they can't prevent other people (in this case Swatch) from using similar taglines in Switzerland
At least reliable Apple insiders have been reporting on the iPhone switching to USB-C next year. And since the EU now prohibits phones that can otherwise fit a USB-C port from going portless, it’s not like Apple had much of a choice. Hopefully we won’t have to wait much longer for the AirPods to follow suit.

That taco bell restraunt is actually a really good idea. The trick would be to still have one lane bring everyone to a single order box, and have that one order lane feed all three pickups. This way cars with large orders won't clog up everyone behind them, and during high traffic fast orders they could get people through nearly as fast as people could order. It's actually a really great design if implemented properly. However this is the real world, so they will just make it a drive up and order sonic style. So instead of ordering while you wait in line, you'll order when you get there, wait 5 minutes for you food holding everyone else up, and then drive away.

This. I once bought a USB-C monitor that had the stones to ship it with a cable that was prominently labeled "data only." Rifling through my cable drawer to find a USB-C cable that actually does what I need it for (especially given that many don't conform to spec are not actually orientation-agnostic and bidirectional) is always an hour-long project. Apple is almost certainly going to roll up with their own proprietary charging and data transfer standard, so if you want to get anything better than 5V/0.5A charging you'll need to make sure that every component in the process that ponied up for "MFi Certification."
One thing I love about Lightning ports are the ease of cleaning them out. Fuzz, dirt, etc can all be removed with any thin tool. USB-C removes this ability without a higher risk of damaging the port
when people inevitably go "This stifles innovation!" I'd like to remind them we had a ten year window in which no innovations were made. Lightning is *still* based on USB 2.0 and USB 4 is right around the corner. if you're upset about government overstepping, that's totally fine! just... next time, don't use a stupid-as-hell argument like "stifling innovation"
The only good thing lighting cable has is that it doesn’t have a ridiculous naming convention where you have to make sure you buy the usb-c 3.2ab2022v.02.04(v3) in order to get the best one... although I wouldn’t call a lack of updates a feature either 😅
I don't even know how having type c stifles innovation. The type C is the innovation. Why would apple be wanting to waste their time trying to create a new port instead of cameras or cpu/gpu or software or something else. The only reason they have lightning is to make money. Imagine everyone who says apple or samsung charger in the future and ( hopefully ) there shouldn't be any confusion.
@@Blue_Soul_Slayer That's because "stifling innovation" was never meant to be a logical argument. Boy how contradictory is Apple's statement about USB-C NOW compared to a year ago in trying to fight against any mandate. The fact is USB-C is excellent because of how versatile it is. You can push some pretty heavy power through one, enough to deal with a laptop (not fast like their charger port and the power brick made for charging, but still). So it's a great port. I don't know what type of speed limits it has, but considering it handles USB3.2 gen2x2 which is almost impossible to find in a device STILL, I think it has plenty of bandwidth. But, it also handles 40Gbps, or roughly 5GB/s. OK, that's the speed of a really fast NVMe drive. So, incredibly fast data transfer and power handling. I think that's probably sufficient for a few years while waiting for other devices to catch up to what it offers.
They will have USB-C in the US. They aren't going to set up 2 different phone models with a lighting/USB-C for different regions. Just a lot easier and cost-effective to have 1 model of phone.
@Krauses And it's a net negative for me. No reason to go any further in cooperation than being in the EEZ / EEA like Norway, Switzerland and a few more. My country loses money and self-governance from being in this superstate.
all manufacturers just code their cables so you still need one cable for every product. I should get millions to think about that and create the law by myself
What Apple _SHOULD_ do is give the iPhone both Lightning and USB-C, so I can finally use headphones and charge my phone at the same time, as well as have a backup port in case one dies.
You can use the charging and data transfer features of a USB Type-C cable simultaneously, you just need a small adapter, I had something similar for a tablet that we used as an HTPC, in fact doesn't even need to be Type-C, older USB revisions can do that too.
I'm sure they have a dongle with both an aux and a USB hook up. All the USB need to do is just supply power and the audio jack will just send information, not hard, that's why cables have Many wires in them and can be separated for different purposes
No that would just be silly. They'll either go completely wireless or put usbc in and throw a lightning adapter in the box, which is really the simplest option. The extra speed the usbc port can offer will be a marketing win, as well as the extra power, they'll spin it somehow
Of course Ford, the top fleet vehicle manufacturer (more Ford trucks are work trucks), is going to be first to make a truck that can charge other vehicles, that's just Ford being Ford. Remember they make racecars simply to dominate in one race for a season or two then stop making and racing that car.
Ford lightning used to be a fast drag truck. My dad wanted one when he was at my age. Now they brought them back as just F150’s on battery. Not the lightning you see from back then
I’ve had a iPhone 13 Pro Max for 8 months and haven’t plugged it in once. Lightning or USB C, it doesn’t matter. You realistically never need to plug a cable into a phone.
The concept of a government body actually standing up to a corporation's shitty actions is blowing this american's mind edit: "this american" is me, not Linus, you weird nerds
Probably won’t solve anything, since you still would need your mainboard to support a new CPU. In the end Intel reuses some sockets, but you won’t run a new CPU on a DDR2 board. And compared to USB-C (where we talk more about the formfactor and not functionality, since usb-c equals thunderbolt e.g.), you could actually prevent further improvements on the CPU market, since manufacturers would be bound to a specific size, number of pins etc.
The Taco bell thingy sounds just like auto banks here in Costa Rica, you can withdraw money from your car and the money is transported through tubes. It's a more convenient way to serve more drive thru costumers
I wonder tho, now that you brought it up. Does the EU regulation have provisions for the "no ports at all" loophole? They're gonna have to provide something to charge, right? If they get rid of all the ports, they can't just BS their way out of it like they did when they stopped providing actual chargers with their phones. Okay, it probably IS safe to assume everyone will have some kind of USB-outlet to charge with the provided lightning cable. But is it safe to assume everyone will have a magsafe/QI charger? Also, while the Ford thing seems like/is a grade-A troll towards Tesla, it's actually good thinking in general. A car like the F-150 isn't a bad choice for roadside assistance. And as more and more EVs get on the roads, it's not a bad idea to have an alternative to "tow to the nearest charger" in case of a dead battery. It's also high time Tesla gets rid of their proprietary connector in the US, as well.
@@the_retag So Apple can just make the phone so thin a USB-C port won't fit! I really hate Apple too but is it really necessary for the EU to make these laws for private companies to standardize ports? Is it hurting people's rights? What am I missing because I want to hate Apple on this one too. 🤔
From my understanding on this: its that a lot of e-waste was being made by not having a international standard and that Apple was being Apple and not getting on board with the other tech companies and switching to usb-c. I hope phone manufacturers don't try to go for all portless phones... that would be an environmental disaster. I remember reading a study that if all of the iPhones in Europe were replaced with ones that could only be wirelessly charged, they would literally have to build new power plants purely to power the additional drain because of how inefficient wireless charging is.
Apple cares about the environment so that would never happen. /s Also, I heard that an iPower plant was being built in Germany to generate this additional electricity, it runs on coal. It's a brave endeavor. /s
That part about wireless charging of phones requiring new power plants is not true and borderline misinformation. Yes, wireless charging is less efficient than wired and quite a lot so, but phone charging is only a fraction of a single percent of the total electricity consumption of a household. With industrial sectors in the mix, the difference would not be perceivable for the power grid.
@@CanIHasThisName I found the study again, and it wasn't referring to specifically iPhones or Europe, so I decided to do the math on my own. It genuinely isn't misinformation. It's not hard math to do: Europe had a population of 764.4 million in 2018. In 2020, 86% of Europeans had cell service. iOS has 31% phone market share in Europe. 86% of 764.4 million is 657.4 million phones. iOS's market share would suggest that 203,789,040 are iPhones. Now in quick search, all I could find for power consumption is that an iPhone 6 would consume 19.8 Watt-hours to charge from 0-100 using a standard charger. Now that is quite old, batteries have gotten bigger, so that number likely has gone up for modern iPhones. 165,874,800 x 19.8 = 4,035,022,992 Watt-hours or 4.04 Gigawatt-hours to charge all iPhones in Europe. That is our baseline, and is in fact a few power plants worth of capacity on its own. Now for our hypothetical portless iPhone, I of course don't have charging numbers for it. However since they all use the Qi standard, I am going to use the numbers from the study which was performed with a Pixel 4. Pixel 4: - 14.26 Wh with the standard cable - 19.8 Wh with the Pixel Stand (39% more energy) - 21.01 Wh with a hand-aligned wireless charger (47% more energy) - 25.62 Wh with a poorly aligned wireless charger (80% more energy) I'm going to assume that the MagSafe charger aligns just as well as the Pixel Stand. If every iPhone in Europe eventually became portless, and they all only ever used a MagSafe charger, that would mean they use 39% more energy to charge. That's 5.62 GWh, that's at least another power plant. If the MagSafe charger isn't as efficient or people just aren't using them, it could be 47% more, which is 5.94 GWh. Worst case scenario, people don't use special self-aligning chargers and don't spend the time to line the phones up just so (which is going to be a lot), it's 80% more, which is 7.27 GWh. Bad habits cost carbon. This doesn't account for population growth, increased smartphone use, or more power-hungry devices, and these gigawatt hour numbers are only for a single 0-100 charge, this is an energy cost that will be recurring every day. Also if Apple releases a portless phone, their competitors will too, driving these power consumption numbers up across the industry.
We live in a world where the small USB ports on all these electronics can be USB type C and be version 3.0 or later without much added cost. We are talking cents in price difference. But no you can still get items sold new today with micro USB and other older standards in that form factor. Why? USB C isn't huge, if your design is really that compact that a millimeter or less on each side in the port width really makes that big of a difference... go take a walk and re evaluate the design.
It’s not just the cost of upgrading the part, in a lot of cases they’re trying to finish their old stock of old parts. And in cheaper devices usually they sacrifice USB C as the ports are functionally similar when they only need to charge a device.
@@TrendyWhistle I can see where you're coming from but I would also like to argue that USB C has been around for a while now. If you have that much stock where it takes years to get rid of your old ports... thats a lot of ports. Additionally I've seen it on devices like a camera, where you are able to transfer files from the device to a computer. I'd like USB C 3.0 or later so the pictures transfer quicker.
Always great to see Linus back doing the news, I love how you can still mister enthusiasm for it after all this time! And thanks for posting for this to be subtitled too! It really helps! Is it possible that's something we might see come to all LMG videos one day?
USB C is by far my favorite connection type by far, but I don't like the idea of some government forcing a company to comply. The market will determine what is best for the consumer, you don't have to buy Apple if you don't want their connection type.
I welcome USB-C to iPhone, but what does the legislation mean long down the road? The EU remember also gave us GDPR, Windows browser ballots, and helped unintentionally to kill off most alt browser engines leaving us with just 3, 1 of which, Chromium, utterly dominates.
It means by 2027 every phone, camera, tablet and laptop will be usbc for charging. This in turn will probably mean every other device will become usbc as more people will be expecting it. The problem is the sheer number of junk usbc cables being sold.
The EU nearly mandated that all phones use Micro-USB. And you can bet that if that had happened, every phone today would still need to use it, because once governments start sticking their hands into these kinds of things, innovation slows to a standstill. USB-C has been around for a while already, and although something better isn't yet available, it will come sooner or later. And when it does, the EU has just basically guaranteed that it won't ever be possible to move forward from here.
Without things like the browser situation, Internet Explorer would still be a thing. Yes, everything except Firefox is based on some fork of WebKit, but at least it's open source. That's a huge positive for the industry
GDPR is good, by the way. Companies need to have restrictions around usage and storage of personal data. Accepting cookies is dumb but the rest is good.
I’m hesitant to say that mandating USB-C is a good thing, as much as I want USB-C iPhones. If a new standard comes out that is superior, now it has to go through not only industry standardization headache, now it has to also go through legislative processes to be *allowed* to be put on new devices.
When it comes to consumer protection, I think EU is the world's last "good guy". Thankfully EU is a big enough market ro have the good effects ripple elsewhere too.
Yeah, EU protects us from "misleading" traditional names of certain products, while it allows companies to sell different quality products under the same name :) Just because they do a good thing once in a while doesn't make them good guys.
No Government is the "good guy". Politicians are worse than scums. You don't understand how this kills innovation. What happens to the person who is designing a new standard better than USB-C? That person will go to America or China and design that port, make it work there, and the EU will one day adopt the newer standard. That is why Apple, Google Microsoft and Amazon all come from America and not EU where regulations strangle innovation.
@@TheGrejp not sure if this information is helping - the quality difference is an issue since EU accepted former eastern block countries, but one phone manufacturer not accepting an industry standard had apparently higher priority :)

The right-wing libertarians are very mad about this LOL. But then, these people don't acknowledge that climate change is real, so I doubt e-waste is a problem they've even slightly thought about.
Or maybe they have a point that you fail to see. Lightning ports are easier to clean for dust, dirt etc compared to USB-C ones. USB-C isn't as thin as the lightning connector. That itself compromises whatever apple wants it's iPhone design to be. I don't buy the iPhone because it does not have USB-C. That's how it should work in my opinion. Such regulations imposed by the government ( where the slightest change takes years to take into effect ) does come in the way of innovation. I am all in for regulations that make sense, but relentlessly regulating everything has it's pitfalls.
@@tackytaco8133 I see where you're coming from but your points are a little off. Firstly, when was the last time any normal consumer cleaned their phone port? It usually takes years to get buildup bad enough to be noticeable and even then USB-C isn't that much harder to clean. I'd prefer spending a minute longer cleaning a port once every few years than have a port that's out of date in every other way. Secondly, I was curious and grabbed both a Lightning and USB-C cable to compare and USB-C is perhaps a fraction of a millimetre taller. You say it takes up more space which is true, but have you also considered that it makes the connector more durable? Finally, the innovation thing doesn't really work here. You say the slightest change taking years to come into effect hurts innovation. Would perhaps be true, but Apple has now had over a decade to innovative and here we are, still with Lightning. In this case, the legislation isn't restricting the innovation, it's forcing it. USB-C is currently evolving faster than phones are. The latest generation can charge laptops and support the bandwidth of a modern graphics card. On top of that, it's an open standard that Apple is already a part of. If they see room for further innovation they are more than free to implement it.
Consumers just shouldnt buy iphones if its that much of an issue. I have never even thought about getting an iphone over android because things like this.
In my opinion, USB C charging should also be forced on laptops. Sure, the manufacturer can add a barrel plug or whatever, but at least allow the device to charge via at least one of its USB C ports.

It reminds me of the 30 year old messaging system of my local supermarket.
even better, tube right to my house, i click buy on their website and they shoot me the food through the tube
It converts the drive through to a bankers queue system. The big advantage of that system is that if an order is delayed that customer doesn't inhibit processing of other customers. So instead of ordering while you wait in line, you'll order when you get there, wait 5 minutes for you food holding everyone else up, and then drive away.
maybe order online and use qr codes to verify your order and proceed payment. that way. you stay there only to receive your order and pay.

Not only that but every charger, every wired pair of headphones, and all the cheap $3 charger port fan junk would all go to waste
Apple cares about the environment so that would never happen. /s
Also, I heard that an iPower plant was being built in Germany to generate this additional electricity, it runs on coal. It's a brave endeavor. /s
Now do it with electric cars…
That part about wireless charging of phones requiring new power plants is not true and borderline misinformation. Yes, wireless charging is less efficient than wired and quite a lot so, but phone charging is only a fraction of a single percent of the total electricity consumption of a household. With industrial sectors in the mix, the difference would not be perceivable for the power grid.
@@CanIHasThisName
I found the study again, and it wasn't referring to specifically iPhones or Europe, so I decided to do the math on my own.
It genuinely isn't misinformation. It's not hard math to do:
Europe had a population of 764.4 million in 2018.
Pixel 4:
- 14.26 Wh with the standard cable
- 19.8 Wh with the Pixel Stand (39% more energy)
- 21.01 Wh with a hand-aligned wireless charger (47% more energy)
- 25.62 Wh with a poorly aligned wireless charger (80% more energy)
I'm going to assume that the MagSafe charger aligns just as well as the Pixel Stand.
Saw a Rivian R1T yesterday. Looks pretty good.
Now we can finally USB-C all the things!
I hope that makes delivery faster.
'They put two of them in the macbook air charger, THEY HAD SPARES'😂
EU has the high ground
USB C is by far my favorite connection type by far, but I don't like the idea of some government forcing a company to comply. The market will determine what is best for the consumer, you don't have to buy Apple if you don't want their connection type.
When I hear “A series of Tubes” I hear the ASOT intro from Pyro in my head
The taco bell reminds me of those banks with tubes
@@Papinak2 Except that the quality difference issue is also being addressed at this very moment.
@@TheGrejp not sure if this information is helping - the quality difference is an issue since EU accepted former eastern block countries, but one phone manufacturer not accepting an industry standard had apparently higher priority :)
I think they might be the world's first "good guy".

Ford finally got tired of being towed by gm..
ah yes, celebrating the fact that an internationally recognized governmental body is now setting the precedent that it can mandate the hardware private companies are allowed to sell to private consumers! Truly we have taken a step forward in our evolution.
Cut them some slack, they're Canadian. They've never known anything other than the tentacles of totalitarian government tyranny curling around every single aspect of their lives.
When your port is so awful and outdated that people have to lobby the government to force you to replace it and stop being antitrust/anticonsumer
If they ignore the partners nobody will make any accessory for the phone, since they are bankrupted.. The already manufactured lightning accessories will the remain in the store/factory forever, since most user will buy the accessories for their new phone. Is that good for the economy? Just a few thousand people will lose their jobs, who cares if you can get one little changes?
@@randomcomment9992 Their partners can cheaply switch ports you know... Lmao it's been done many times before and it can be done again. Besides Apple already proved they didn't care about their partners when they removed the headphone jack to force their partners to pay massive royalty fees if anything this would make their partners bank since Apple wouldn't be able to stick their greedy hands in their pocket to take a large fee with it no longer proprietary crappy slow speed usb2.0 port and they would have a larger target audience
@@willwunsche6940 first of all, if you still didn't noticed all other device slowly changed to USB-C at Apple side.. in order how many accessories they usually have.. so pretty lame to think that they don't want to change, they already started to change the whole lineup.. secondary, im not talking about the accessories for the next gen devices, i talking about the accessories what are ALREADY in the stores, or in a storage of any factory.. how do you planing to switch that to USB-C..? because the thermal camera is pretty expensive, and totally unusable with any adapter, not just the flexible but even the stable adapter can ruin the usage.. so if you already have 10 on that thermal camera in your storage, who will buy those?
@@randomcomment9992 Simple solution do what most manufacturers do and give a warning a few months or 8-12 months ahead of time as they phase out support. Also most people don't immediately buy the latest and greatest phone all at once when it comes out, there is always a market for older standards. You can look online right now there are companies still selling 3rd party Wiimotes/accessories and that console was long discontinued. Companies don't typically keep massive reserves of inventory on hand idleing too, because that costs massive money and isn't guaranteed sales. Trust me those big 3rd party accessory companies will be just fine it's not like they haven't had since 2010 (when EU first started to get rid of their greedy proprietary port and standardize cables for the world) to prepare for this we all knew it was coming, especially them. You can bet all of these companies are really happy to be focusing on a single connector with a much larger potential market to make way more money
Opporating on scale, as expensive as thermal camera products are, only 10-20 of them is nothing for a company. Small businesses burn that kind of money even on little mistakes occasionally it's just normal such as grocery stores that over order stock and then have to sell the extra at half price to free up valuable shelf space and push them out before expectation dates
@@willwunsche6940 yeah, that is true, but if you thinking about it a bit more, you will also realize those who seeking the cheaper devices will not really aiming for the most expensive accessories. And there are accessories what are not cheap, but also no reason to manufacture just 1000-2000 piece at once to avoid the big stock in the storage (like the mentioned heat camera).
Ryyyy, MN in the video! Btw, day 1 line was insane.

Apple will just release a port-less iPhone with a MagSafe charger that has a FIXED cable
That literally can't happen because of EU laws,, plus have fun resetting your phone :))

Considering the heightened crime rates in poorer Minneapolis-suburb neighborhoods since mid-2020, makes sense. (Not trolling; I live here; the amount of BS I’ve had to deal with in the last 2 years has far outstripped anything I ever encountered in the crummier neighborhoods of NYC, and has taken a significant toll on my financial and economic status.)
But I’ve been saying this all along- businesses will protect their self-interests one way or another, and if businesses are on their own, the future starts looking a lot like a dystopian fiction like Idiocracy.
I was half expecting to see robocop at that Taco Bell.
If you make all companies use USB-C, doesn't this stifle innovation?
Are you even aware of how fast usb c can be? And not even usb C, but the usb standard. lightning is STILL usb 2, how is that not stifling innovation?
I think it more comes down to when your port is so awful and outdated that the people have to lobby the government to replace it
The left sleeve...
It's only a matter of time before I can finally invite someone to dinner and dancing at Taco Bell. Don't think I'll ever be able to get the three sea shells thing though...
I love how every time a government actually does its job in regulating big business, the anti-government nut jobs come out in full force - especially the Americans.
The right-wing libertarians are very mad about this LOL. But then, these people don't acknowledge that climate change is real, so I doubt e-waste is a problem they've even slightly thought about.

@Krauses the cracks in capitalism are getting bigger every day
Or maybe they have a point that you fail to see.
You should have titled this video
It's over Apple, EU has the high ground
I mean it’s really not that difficult. They have the ability to make laws. So they write it down on a piece of paper and sign it.

yah good job this is what I want to see :)
That TacoBell isn't anything new. Back in the olden days when I was a kid and Drive in Resauraunts were still a thing, there were some Drive Ins that had a big building on top, an open air parking lot on the bottom and teenagers taking orders at the car and sending them up to the kitchen and waiting at dumb waiters for the orders to deliver them. This is just an Automat and a Dive In merged.
