Thank you! I am in NH and I could bring him to you, lol, that would be a long drive though. Chewbacca is great! However, I am trying to get him in the water. I am like 115lb and he is 92lbs, and my husband is disabled...so it is not too fun to try to get him in. We follow all your stuff. I will take a peek at online stuff.
I am a fan of your training style, and I can travel to see you in person! But, I doubt you have a need for middle-aged students to shadow the cameraman! So, I will continue to watch her handiwork from this view!
It was a joy to watch Henry's truly glorious exuberance in the water. He was so so so happy!!!! Brought happy tears to my eyes !!! Yeah, not the purpose of the vid, but it was AWESOME!!❤❤❤❤❤ Thanks, Stonnie.
Ditto. Snow melting fast up in the great State of Wisconsin. Been thinking about the best way to introduce our pup to water. Now I know. Thanks Stonnie!
Perfect timing on this. I have a 4 month old GSP that is getting used to a creek I have on our property but now I know how to approach the next step... deeper waters and swimming. Fun to watch these guys progress, learn, and experience new things.
You make everything look so easy, Uncle Stonnie. When my two labs blew their coats a few weeks ago, I cursed the day that I decided to get Labs--even the black one. Then today, I had to give my Yorkie her spring haircut. It took over an hour, so I'm cursing the day that I got my little accessory I mean dog. It's too bad their fur isn't painted on. lol...Seriously though, I love my Labs and my crazy, feisty, junkyard dog mentality, little Yorkie. However, our pack's training never stops. If I let up and lax out, they forget how to walk at perfect heal, wait to be told to move, the black one gets whiny and slow to obey, the yellow one thinks rolling around like an untrained puppy is cute, and all that. So, mealtime around here is training time...walk time is training time...going out the door to play is training time...every enjoyable activity must be earned by obeying commands first. These labs are the best dogs I've ever had even if they shed like none other.
I love it!! Henry is stoked!! When I rescued my chocolate Eli he was 1 year old and had never been to the water. That changed the first week I had him, he’s a natural!!
Just a quick story about Laps swimming. I live on Lk Huron and own and operate a RV and camp ground. A couple came to camp with their black American Lab and decided to take it to our beach to swim. They were tossing a ball for their lab to fetch but they kept tossing it further to humor their Lab more like they were tired of tossing the ball. It was very windy, so I warned them hey you shouldn’t be tossing the ball so far out with the wind and currents you might lose him. I had my English lab but he only would go in the water far enough to drink but I had seen other guess Labs go swimming to far out. I had gone back inside my cabin when I heard screaming from this couple and some other guest. They didn’t listen about the tossing of the ball so far out so when I ran to the beach there were 3 people in the water swimming after the dog by this time the dog was about an 1/8 or further of a mile out. Now we had a dog drifting away and 3 guest in trouble also drifting out. Thankfully I hadn’t put my motor boat away for the night I had to rescue the 3 guest and the poor worn out Lab. Moral to this is listen to the owner - have more sense than your dog and by god if your dogs going into one of the Great Lakes or a large Lk. everyone including the dog need floatation devices on. One man ended up in the hospital he had Asthma really bad and water in his lungs. I swear dogs can have more sense than their owners. My cooper is my sit picture when he was a pup he is nine years now. Thanks I love your videos
That’s a crazy story! Glad everyone is ok. I think the moral there needs to be know your dogs ability and have an emergency plan. Really an 1/8th mile doesn’t seem that far, that’s only 220 yards. The lake at our ranch is about 400 yards across and my black lab and his brother (both 7 months) will both go out 200 yards or more a few times, as will their dad (9 years old). Then again he also helped himself to swimming around the dock at 8 weeks old and has been a strong swimmer, never had to teach him how. We also always have the little electric motor fishing boat in the water too in case something happened we could get out there pretty quick. Hey, and by the way my dogs name is Cooper too!
I will be getting our Lab in the water here soon. Last year as a pup she went skidding off a dock while running, and plunked into the water.....took a couple of seconds for her to pop back up. I had a long lead on her and it was like bringing in a fish. I got her turned towards shore and she came in. She's not shown much interest in getting wet since. She even hates a strong rain.
Dear Stonnie , I just recently found your channel , and absolutely love it . They way you handle the dogs is so gentle , laid back , and natural . Everyone seems to be having mostly fun . I’m tempted to sign MYSELF up for a course 😳 !! What do you use for good behavior treats ? They disappear so fast , it’s impossible to see what they are . In one of your videos , you mentioned you do boarding . How does that work , and how much does that cost ? Your facility is definitely top notch !! Thank you for sharing your gifts with us . 🌸💕
I never taught my West German/Czech working breed German Shepherd how to swim, but he loved the water and loved to retrieve his ball from a lake or at the beach. In contrast, my friend's show quality German Shepherd wanted nothing to do with the water except for grooming. 😂 My next dog will be a field Labrador Retriever
As kids back in the 70s we had a Female black lab that we would breed with a friend's black lab. Our Female had 4 litters of puppies. We lived on a Lake and when the puppies were 10 weeks old we would throw them off the end of the Dock into the Lake. 26 puppies in total over the years, every puppy we threw off the Dock popped up an swam about 60ft to the shore with no problem.
and every puppy and litter was badly traumatised and took twice as long to get used to water .............or possibly never did ! Thank goodness we have moved on from the 70's training methods !
German Shepherd here. 14 months old. He's started to enjoy playing up to neutral buoyancy by our river's boat ramps. The wife and I want to encourage him to go further and swim. She wants to get him a dog life vest. IMO, that seems unnecessary. What say you, sir? Thanks!
Hi Stonnie, What kind of reward treats do you use ? I want to give my new pup crunchy treats as rewards; but all I see in the stores are chewy treats -- which I don't want to give her because chewy soft treats stick in a dog's teeth. I want to keep her teeth healthy.
Stonnie, over the years some of our labs suffered from "lab tail" several hours after swimming in cold water. Haven't heard you mention it, do you ever have that?
@@Swamp_Lad Not sure if it's paralysis or just painful to move it, but the tail hangs straight down tight to their butt. Makes them very unsettled, won't sit, keeps fussing with the tail until it passes
@@BobW751 didn’t know about that and never had it with my Labs, but they were more spring till autumn swimmers, so water wasn’t that cold :) thanks for sharing!
My 2yr old female pushed my 8wk male puppy off a dock in to a river . he learned to swim real quick . he loves water we can't keep either dog out of the river
My chocolate English lab refuses to go swimming. He loves to wade though, at that point you are talking about. He is a big guy now, 1.5 yr old. I have had labs before and this is the 1st time ever I have had a lab that refuses.
Exactly the same problem with my chocolate Lab (9 months). I will buy over knees gumboots (or wait for warmer weather), to go with him in the deeper water and bring him over the point. Greetings from germany.
I have always thrown my dog in the river with a good boy. They have never drowned. I think you have a more responsible way of teaching. I will leave school of hard Knox in my past.
