Yes,we met on the set of " Woobinda" along with the great Bill Hunter back in the 70's greatmemories for me , Rest my brother "Sandy" see you then.,,,,,, Bindi Williams
Thanks Jonathon. That is a great tribute to Sandy. I wept. Producer David Hannay who worked with Harbutt on Stone said "The most negative experience I had as a filmmaker in a career of over three decades was not being able to get finance for Harbutt to make another film: Why have I failed? What is wrong with me? I have failed this man who is such an important part of my life, this man with enormous talent, this extraordinary human being, and I have failed him totally and absolutely. It really is the major low point in my life; if I really dwell on it, I get very angry.... I should have made a difference. Because I should have been able to make it happen. He is far more talented than 999 of the 1000 other people I know... You understand, of course, that he is his own producer. It is not a question of whether he would go to another producer. If he felt so inclined, he would. But, apart from anything else, Sandy needs somebody who is prepared to fold themselves into what he wants to do and be committed to that. That is something you would have to talk to him about." Our Aussie nation failed this man, he should have been "Sir Sandy Harbutt" for his services to just the Aussie film industry alone because of this one movie. How much more should he have been knighted for his services to biker culture worldwide?! Oh yeah... bikers don't have a "valid" culture. I was born to this. This is where God put me as a human being... I joy in it! Let humankind pursue their love of power, I'll go with Captain Midnight, "That big iron thing man... it's all fins and rods, edges and noise! THAT'S POWER man! And you're part of it! You're strong like it is! It's the greatest feeling in the world... who would want to do anything else? Thanks again mate. This movie had a deep existential impact on my absolutely unreasonably long life. HTF am I still alive? If I had been born in Scandinavia in say, 800 AD, I would have been concerned like Cohen The Barbarian. Fortunately, I was always a rebel. In this era that must mean "God has a plan." Gotta be a fundamentalist evangelical to be a rebel these days. I will never fucking conform to the paradigm of social power. It's is almost like I should be thanking Dr Death for being a Satanist when it mattered... before it was fucking trendy. "Stone" should be compulsory viewing in primary school. Carve your own path. Like the Gravies. Like Sandy. Fuck conformity without yer own mind. I downloaded your tribute. It's going on the hard drive I shall leave for my son.
The film ( and mad max ) inspired me to take a motor cycle road trip across Australia (im from Scotland ) in the 80,s , stuck to the coast roads and had a great time (only one crash) pre internet Australia was a different place then and the pioneer spirt was still there . Saw some of the stone film locations as well .
I just watched Skippy in the morning and always look up to see where the ‘featured’ actor is today. Sadly I put Sandy’s name into Google and this was the first result. I’ve been trying to highlight the importance of the Skippy film set in ‘white fella’ history but sadly the importance of trying to save the film set buildings falls on deaf ears. Beautiful tribute 😢
I watch "skippy" to see aussie actors of the 1960s . I have been fascinated by the picture of the vase and flowers in the rangers office and wonder what happen to it. I am a Sydneyite and the stone movie is a great nostalgia vibe. In those days bike riders would wave to each other , Kombi drivers too.
