Fake or real. When they pulled it up . That's a natural reaction.
Almost certain that the first sword is a 1610-20 swept-hilt rapier in the German style, absolutely beautiful...
It likely won't be Dutch, as the swept hilt on Dutch rapiers would more often sweep down to the pommel, and the large, rounded pommel itself is pretty iconic for a German swept-hilt rapier.
Absolutely unbelievable find guys, well done.
Definitely take it to a museum asap, because if it is Dutch, it could be a very rare find.
Looks like it may have originally been in the scabbard as the chape appears to be rusted to the tip of the blade ?

I would say it totally looks like a Spanish rapier, and It fits by time period.
I bought that at the costume shop last Halloween and chucked it in their after a few to many pints.

Is it worth anything
Archaeology professor here - when you find something like that, you need to get it into the environment it came from ASAP. The bashing of clumps of rust is potentially very destructive to things you can't see, too. Taking better care of your finds will be rewarding.
I am just an enthusiast, and I came here to say just that. They should immerse the artifacts in the river water, they have buckets and ropes. The handling of the artifacts was also panic inducing..
Interesting. I had no idea and would have messed up if that would have been me there.
I just replied such myself with only self education. Educate themselves with how to keep, persevere, restore and handle such finds.
They said they needed to get it back in water.
I wouldn't worry, it's probably a replica... perhaps the channel is dishonest, perhaps a film prop... a long way to go before it's authenticity can be determined

@@BlueBirdsProductions well, America definitely has some history too. Maybe not the best, but there might be some good finds out there. I’m from North Carolina, USA and we have a lot of history. Especially civil war history.
America in sum states you can find civil war items, Metal detecting on land you can find kernal buttons to items like ol guns spearhead artifacts, you name it you will and can find items war men items that they dug underground for safe keeping. You name it it will be there for the finds.@@BlueBirdsProductions
@@beccajoyner Compared to any European countries age the US is a toddler at best, so very little to find in comparison. Plus the Civil war is just interesting to people from the US unlike much of history where borders have changed for millennia.
