- I got a over 100 year old wine barrel from a fried of mine. It was long years in a dry cellar has cracks and most bands are missing.
In this video you can see that not all hope is lost :)
I modify the barrel for the use as a planter.
Just because I am curious I filled the barrel with water and I was amazed how fast the wood expands and a lot of gaps became tight again. Unfortunately the barrel as suchs was lost because of all the cracks and fractures in the wood.
Now is ist a cool planter with beach and pirate style and history!

😀Nice idea! Will be tried with our old barrel 👍👍
Its time for the restauration of our old corner cabinet. So come over for a weekend and lets do it ;)
😁
I bought a whiskey barrel to use as a rain barrel outside. It's not particularly old, just discarded from the distillery. It has 3 one-inch holes in the side for venting. What's the best way to stopper those hole to make it water tight?
I would take a oak - if this is the wood of the barrel - branch and cut it to fit the holes. It will look like a plug from the distillery.
How would you seal the cracks?
If you want to stay traditional and make it watertide you can take reed leaves. But my old wood was too dammaged.
@@heikoofalltrades2267 what if I don't care about staying traditional? Wax? Caulk?
@@DrJoonPark Hmmm, maybe a kind of Silicone. The Whiskey producers used a kind of sugar syrup, but I dont know much about it. I would go with Silicone - flexible, food safe. I would use it from the inside.
@@heikoofalltrades2267 thanks! I'll give it a shot
