I just installed a tankless water heater in my RV. This video extremely simplifies the job and makes a very technical job look easy. It isn't easy. The job requires rerouting hot and cold water lines. Rerouting the copper propane line (not a job for beginners). The 110 electrical has to be disconnected and an electrical box install for the wires. You need a voltage tester to confirm the polarity of the DC electric wires. On my unit I had to build the floor up so it fit with the exterior hole. I've replaced my RV refrigerator, commode and several other projects for myself and neighbors at the RV park. This was by far the hardest.
My guy, thanks so much for this simple hookup! I was concerned the new device would have the 6 colored crazy wires and my trailer being 20years used the seller didn't have any of the manuals. Now I know this unit does all of that for us and we just need the original pos/negative connections. So easy and thanks again sir!
For anyone researching tankless water heaters i would highly recommend using butyl tape between the flange and trailer. Caulking alone is not enough. Leaks will develop around screws and if the caulk cracks you have no way to keep water out.
Just found you guys on RUclips and really appreciated this video. This is the first video I have seen on swapping out hot water heaters. We want to do this for our new 2022 Grand Design Momentum 395MS soon after we get it in mid-April since we will be full-time RVers. Thanks!
@@jamesbrown2492 We haven't yet but I am starting to have my doubts about doing this. We seem to be fine with the amount of hot water we currently get and a Truma tankless seems like a unnecessary expense at this time. We are concerned about our return on investment.
I'm going to install a TC Fundy 65,000 Btu hopefully today in my trailer. I was just watching a RV tech and he said to only use your hot water tap and not to mix with cold. Set your Water heater to 110 or lower and it should work fine. You'll have to test to get the right temperature you desire.
Are you ( or used to be ) a teacher ? If not, you should be. You made this video easy to understand. My 9 year old watched it and understood what you were doing. Again, very well done and safe travels..
Just got mine installed and Fu%##@ LOVE IT!!!.... 15-20mts shower (more if not for the wife rushing me) with uninterrupted hot water....Highly recommend it!
Don't forget to depressurize the heater by pulling the expansion valve or turning the hot tap on, also a good idea to drain the tank by removing the anode before disconnecting the rear pipes ( make sure you depressurize before removing the anode)
Great video but I must ask, what color what color is your (positive) inside and what color is your (negative) (inside the RV) that you connected to the red and black,on the Unit?? Please write back thank you because I will be installing mine tomorrow
Before you install the mounting flange you could have put a layer of butyl tape around the opening for the outer flange to be bedded into and provide a positive seal. After you trim away the excess butyl tape you run a bead of calking around the outside seam and you will never have a leak. Simple eh?
Jared thanks for the awesome video. How do you know which model is right for your rig? There seem to be many different types and varying prices. I have a 23 foot travel trailer with just my wife, daughter and myself. Any recommendations?
Well this was very helpful.. I have an older truck camper with the usual 6 gal. water heater. I have discovered a very small leak between the combustion chamber tube and the tank and it is rusting the outer box of the heater. I would prefer a tankless due to being alone in the camper and I don't need to maintain all that hot water. Thanks.
I'm curious about maintenance? Hard water can be an issue over time as it was explained to me. I was told its better to have a water softener or have to do some kind of maintenance to it?
THATS INCREDIBLA.... I GUESS THE NOT KNOW HOW DISCOURAGE MANY OF US... THE TUTORIAL REALLY HELPS. WHY BUY A HOUSE... WHEN YOU CAN LEAVE IN A TRAILER..THAT LOOKS LIKE A HOUSE FOR 1/3 OF THE COST....?????
You jumped over connecting the controller....I have this unit and am trying to install but can't get the controller to turn on. 12V connected fine but not the controller...
Does anyone else have one of these where the freeze protection auto run feature starts going at 59 degrees F? My new RV has one of these and I noticed that the heater turned on by itself for a minute and finally figured out it was the freeze protection circuit triggering early. It is only suppose to kick on below 38 degrees. The company service department sent me a new sensor for free, but it took two tries to get one that actually worked at 38 degrees.
+Nikki Washer I would doubt it could do two showers at the same time. But it might be worth emailing the manufacturer, I had good response times when I did
You didn't show the reconnection of the gas line. I have the exact same setup, both old water heater and new tankless. Are there any adapters needed to connect the gas line? Thanks!
No it just threaded straight on with the same compression fitting. Hope the conversion goes well! We are still messing around with our settings. Glad we made the switch!
I’m a little confused about the wiring connection from the UCP to the heater. Two wires at the UCP and two Blue wire at the heater. How was the connection made.?
I have mine installed but I haven't tested it yet. I have a water leak by the shower and I'm waiting on a part to arrive. Should I still get something on the display panel even if the water isn't flowing? I've wired everything but there's nothing on the display.
I know this is a silly question but I'm in the middle of hooking ours up and the UCP isn't working, we are getting power to the unit itself, but the UCP won't turn on. The manual is a bit confusing in the instructions for the two blue wires and the wires on the UCP. Did you wire them all (all four) together? Or do I need to connect one blue wire to one end of the UCP wires, and the other to the other blue? This is such a simple thing for others (I assume) that I haven't found any further instructions online...
Thanks for your quick reply! We ended up figuring it out and it works! We did have to connect each UCP wire to the individual Blue wires from the unit. Then, once the heater was on, we had power to the control panel. Thanks again for the Video as well, we must have watched it half a dozen times. ive been really wanting to purchase this water heater. the water I use is very cold I spoke with a tech and he was not sure if it would keep up. do you have any idea if it would my shower is also located quite far from my hot water heater. this heater will only be used by me also.
+chris cole you know I can't say for sure whether or not it would do a good job heating up very cold water. For us, we haven't had a single issue with it not going to the temp that we set it at. So during the winter we like it a little warmer and will set the temp to 107 and it heats it exactly to that temperature. We have moved around quite a bit and have been connected to lots of different water and we have really enjoyed the tankless. I hope this helps, I know they cost quite a bit of money.
Jared Gillis well it helps but i just went back to the old way i cant fond out if for sure it will work with cold water or hard water so i dunno at a loss really wanted it though. sigh lol
Hi Jared... great video... thanks!... I am currently in the process of installing this unit. I have quick Q. The unit has an ON-OFF switch... does the remote control overrides it? do I leave it OFF and control the ON-OFF with the remote? The manual is not very clear about this.... Thanks!
Might be to long to answer but How are you gaining access to the rear of the heater? Also it looks like you mounted the controls near the heater? I would think we should install that in the restroom? Thanks, We love your videos and are setting up our 5th wheel to go full timing!! Oh what do you use to route you around Low Bridges ect? Might be a GREAT video....
Now that you have had your tankless for a while, what are your thoughts? I've never had a tankless system, but everyone seems to like the concept. It sounds like you have to maintain water flow to get hot water. How do you conserve water usage? ie; dry camping?
+twdenman1 we love it. It made our top five list video ruclips.net/video/cC9O0cLbVQ8/видео.html. When we are boondocking we do like we would normally and turn off the water in the shower when possible to save water. It does give a small interruption in hot water but I don't mind it.
Any issues with water quality like hard water etc that maybe at different locations you visit? I know for home units they say if you have hard water they recommend a water softener system, so was wondering if this holds true for the RV ones.
Just installed mine on my food truck and it appears to heat and work well. I get some pulsating of the water when the pump is going. Not sure where I can fine tune that. Any suggestions?
How's has this been working so far? I've talked to an RV dealer and they said they have had trouble with them. I remember when they first came out for homes, there were many reports of problems and some companies went under leaving customers with failed heaters and no parts.
+videoclipits we love it! If we were to get a new RV we would put in a tankless again. Here is our follow up video.ruclips.net/video/cC9O0cLbVQ8/видео.html
My rv doesn't have any electrical connection near the water heater but has a plug in outlet in the bathroom would it be possible to run it on a cord to the outlet? On a similar model?
I would do a compressor and blow out the water from the whole RV System including the water heater. You could always do the antifreeze in it if you didn't have a compressor.
Great video. The company says it only has a 1.2hmp flow rate to maintain set temperature. That is not much flow for a shower. What is your experience? What do you think the flow rate is? Thanks Tom
Does this save you a lot of propane? I've just got the old water heater working on mine and it went through a tank of propane in about 2 days. Looking around for solutions. Loved the vid!
Awesome video Dude! My wife and I were just talking about putting one of these in our 2015 DVR (as much as it cost it should have come with one). Is there a better brand to buy or are they pretty much the same?
We actually save on propane unless long showers are taken. When you have more than six or ten gallons of hot water it's easy to take a long one. But you save when the hot water isn't running, so the water heater isn't on all the time.

Thank you for this comment! Exactly what I was going to ask about - how much rerouting had to be done to make this work!
Agree. He only shows the easy parts that everyone knows, but not the accessing, disconnecting and reconnecting pats.
I was thinking the same thing. No way is it that simple.
Why did you skip the gas hook up?
My guy, thanks so much for this simple hookup! I was concerned the new device would have the 6 colored crazy wires and my trailer being 20years used the seller didn't have any of the manuals. Now I know this unit does all of that for us and we just need the original pos/negative connections. So easy and thanks again sir!
Does tank less not use Gas back up? he didn't talk about that at all
For anyone researching tankless water heaters i would highly recommend using butyl tape between the flange and trailer. Caulking alone is not enough. Leaks will develop around screws and if the caulk cracks you have no way to keep water out.

Is there an on and off water valve on that thing?
Is that gas line connector a LEFT hand thread. 0:53

My on demand kept blowing a fuse when i tried to turn it on. What am i doing wrong?
Is there a tankless model that doesnt use propane?
I have a friend that has installed one in several rvs. Hard to believe it's that easy. We will check into it. Thanks.
Did he connect anything?
I watched this specifically to see the gas hookup. Why didn't you show that?!

That is the nature of a DC diaphragm pump. you can add an accumulator tank. Shurflo offers a small one for less than $50.

Which tankless water heater did you go with?
Joe
There should be a link in the description box that will send you to the exact one that we purchased.
Jared, I did not see how you tied in the controller to power it? did you just splice it in? Thanks, great video!!
The Controller just connects with 2 wires that come out of the water heater and it doesn't matter wich way you do it
Wait a min...if you’re here. Who’s running All About RVs!?
What was the name or brand you used?
We have the girard tankless one. There should be a link in the description to the one we purchased.
That drain line on the T&P relief valve would drain any water into the units housing and therefore allowing water to enter the RV…
I've always wanted to do this, especially since my electric water heater doesn't work, but this looks waaaaay too easy
I didn't know travel trailers had a 5th wheel hitch
